When Vicki Haverkamp became a mentor mom for TBC’s Intentional Moms, she seized an opportunity that can only come from a God who gives his children lots of Second Chances Anyone who has spent much time with Vicki Haverkamp knows that one of her strongest spiritual gifts is encouragement. She uses this gift to mentor young mothers in our Intentional Moms group and through other ministries. But her greatest joy is using this gift to encourage her own adult daughters. It’s a joy she doesn’t take for granted. There was a time when Vicki didn’t think she could have children. When she and her husband, Butch, were first married, they decided to put off starting a family. “We had decided to wait and have our kids about five years into our marriage,” Vicki said, “but for some reason, we just couldn’t get pregnant.” The Haverkamps decided to look into adoption, but going the traditional route was very expensive. Then Vicki had what can only be described as a providential encounter that changed the couple’s life forever. “I went to a ceramics class and came home with a baby,” Vicki said playfully. She explained that the classmate next to her was affiliated with Birthright. This organization comes alongside women with unplanned pregnancies. This woman had a young mother-to-be living with her (we’ll call her “Julia”). Julia’s parents had kicked her out of the house when they found out she was pregnant. She planned to give her baby up for adoption but hadn’t yet identified an adoptive couple. Vicki and her classmate got to know one another better. It became clear that the Haverkamps could provide a stable family continued 2 CONNECT • JUNE/JULY 2021

Despite the challenges of serving in a mission field that’s 5,235 miles from home and family, TBC-supported mission worker Dalton Chance is confident that “God Has Me in the Right Place” Aproduct of the Topeka Bible Church student ministry is now sharing Christ with youth on the other side of the world. Dalton Chance, a 2016 graduate of Cair Paravel Latin School (and son of John and Christie Chance), has spent the last year and a half working with high school students as a part of the Navigators ministry in Budapest, Hungary. Dalton dedicated himself to overseas missions while in college at John Brown University in Arkansas. In November, 2019, he bid farewell to his parents and two sisters and joined a team of five US missionaries for the journey to Budapest, an Eastern European city of 1.7 million people. He serves in a program called iEDGE (International Evangelism, Discipleship, Growth, and Experience), working with high school students. “Hungary is ‘culturally Christian.’ ...there is a need A lot of people would say they are for people to familiar with the concepts and really know Jesus believe them, without really trusting and what he’s Christ or having a relationship with Him,” Dalton said. “So there is a need for people to really know Jesus and what he’s done for us.” Coping with culture shock, language done for usbarriers, pandemic restrictions, and relationship building, Dalton has been fortified and encouraged by his connection to TBC. He said the church helped instill his desire to serve God overseas. “Growing up in TBC, it was foundational that I was blessed to be a part of a church that had a heart for missions,” Dalton said. “I may not have recognized it all the time growing up, but I know it was important that my church was so continued JUNE/JULY 2021 • CONNECT 9

Each of us has our own stories about the year 2020 and how its events impacted us personally. But for Debbie Nigus, 2020 was about Finding Blessings in a Pandemic Daren and Debbie Nigus moved their young, growing family to Topeka in 1999 when Daren, an anesthesiologist, got a position at St. Francis Hospital. The family of seven attended TBC, the church in which Debbie had grown up. Daren was always very active. He grew up playing lots of sports, especially football. Daren continued to stay in shape as he and Debbie started their family, and he enjoyed getting their kids involved in baseball and football. In 2011, Debbie and the kids began to notice changes in Daren. He was acting a little different and not speaking very well, almost as if English wasn’t his native language. “The change was pretty gradual,” Debbie said. “At first, it was just every once in a while. He would say something kind of strange, and the kids would joke about what Dad said.” Debbie noticed that the pattern became more frequent, and she made a mental list of things she observed. “Then he began to say things that really didn’t make sense,” Debbie said. “He would say the opposite of what he meant. He would use the wrong pronoun or say that something happened when he meant to say it didn’t happen. There was a point when I realized there was something wrong, and I wasn’t just imagining it.” These changes became more noticeable over the next couple of years, to the point where co-workers became concerned. Debbie wondered if Daren was having difficulty hearing, which sometimes affects speech. However, the ENT specialist they saw found no evidence of hearing loss and suggested that the problem might be a cognitive one. Daren went to a neurologist in May of 2013. He had some tests, and in the middle of June, the Niguses got the results. Daren was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia, a form of frontotemporal degeneration. This currently continued 14 CONNECT • JUNE/JULY 2021

Truly I have been blessed by marrying a woman who loves to travel. From the Grand Canyon, California, and Hawaii to Sweden and China, I have had some adventures for sure. One of the most scary/exciting memories was made during our trip to Sweden. Our “cheap”/ inexperienced travel agency “forgot” to tell us that our return flights had been cancelled. Friends with whom we’d been staying dropped us off early in the morning at the airport in Denmark. When we got to the terminal, our flight was not listed. My wife did some smooth talking and got us the closest flight we could get, but it was over a day away! We made the most of it, hitting the streets of Copenhagen to see the birthplace of Legos and other amazing things. We would have missed it all if our flight had not been cancelled. – TBC Children’s Ministry Pastor Jason Brent A couple of years ago, we were blessed with a trip to Maui. One of my favorite memories from that trip was when our family took surfing lessons. We got a small taste of what it is like to “hang ten.” I can see why people get addicted to surfing – it is such a rush to ride a wave. – Brandon Griffith I love cruising to and around Hawaii with my beautiful wife! – Joe Hopeck Our favorite vacation was to Egypt in 2010. Seeing the Pyramids, going inside the Giza Pyramid, Shopping at the Kahn. Driving through Garbage City and seeing “The Cave” Church where the Coptic Christians attend church. Taking a Nile cruise and a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings. So much to see and do. We would love to go back. – Cherie Byrd JUNE/JULY 2021 • CONNECT 19
