Whether they’re working with middle and senior high students or discipling their own young children, Blain and Lindy Clark prove that it isn’t always the harvest that matters, sometimes it’s just about Planting the Seeds Lindy Clark crouches to join a group of high school girls who are seated on the floor. She shifts the one-year-old in her arms to sit cross-legged on the carpet to discuss homework, social media, and teenage boys. Having shepherded the couple’s other three children to their respective Sunday school classes, Blain Clark jumps into a carpet ball battle with a group of young boys. For the moment, he pushes out of his mind the responsibilities at work and home to focus on banter that ranges from sports to video games. Such is a typical Sunday for the Clarks as they minister to Topeka Bible Church high schoolers. The Clarks are not Super Youth Ministers. They’re not Super Parents, and they’re not Super Spouses. They are just an average couple trying to faithfully serve the church where they were called more than a decade ago. Protective parents might cringe at the story of how Blain and Lindy first met. At just 18 years old, Lindy drove cross-country to meet up with a group of teenage Topeka boys she’d met at a Christian music festival. She had befriended the entire group, but once she reached Topeka, recent-high-school-graduate Blain caught her attention. “That’s probably not the smartest thing I could have done!” Lindy said, looking back with a laugh. “I can’t believe my dad let me do it. But that’s how we met.” continued OCTOBER 2020 • CONNECT 3

After numerous instances when God showed He was working in the lives of an atheist and his praying wife, their new mantra became “Coincidence? I think not.” Carol Mammoliti was raised in the Lutheran faith in her hometown of Centerville, Iowa. As a young bride living with her husband, Chris, in rural Mississippi, she no longer attended church. “But Jesus was always with me,” Carol said. “All along, I kept feeling like I needed to get back to church.” Although Carol had a degree in fashion merchandising, her first job during their time in Mississippi was to help Chris, who was running a catfish farm. Chris, a fisheries biologist, landed a job with the Kansas Fish & Game Department at their fish hatchery in Pratt. Born in Kansas City and raised throughout the Midwest, Chris had also been raised in the Lutheran church, but walked away at 15 and decided to follow science instead. “I didn’t think God was real, so I followed that science trail into college. When Carol and I met, I was a full-blown atheist.” Looking back to when they met in 1978, Chris admits that if Carol had been walking with the Lord back then, “She would never have paid any attention to me. And I would never have paid any attention to her.” In Pratt, the Mammolitis had their first child, Kirk. Carol was attending Pratt Bible Church. “God kept pulling me back,” Carol said. “I would just walk away for months or even a year at a time, and something would pull me back. The shift happened when I had our son. I recognized that I was responsible for his spiritual growth and understanding and that just changed everything. I wanted him to know, without a shadow of a doubt, that there was a God and that Jesus was his Savior.” Carol decided to turn away from some of her life choices and submit more fully to God. “I got out my Bible one afternoon and got into First and Second Kings, and I remember devouring that,” Carol said. continued 8 CONNECT • OCTOBER 2020

When the trip happened a few months later, Chris forgot what he wanted to ask, but one of his cousins said, “What do you guys think about God?” Chris was stunned. CONNECTION POINTS We asked TBCers: “What’s the most impactful Bible study you’ve ever done?” My former worship pastor in Wichita, Ray Lungwitz, led a Sunday school class on Why We Do and Say What We Do and Say During Worship. It covered liturgy and Scripture. It was the late 80s and it was the very first time I became consciously aware that my music at church was NOT a gig or a performance, but quite simply WORSHIP. This was only a couple years after I had left the music biz professionally (and the perils of “living in bars”) and spent a couple years also re-learning what it meant to be a believer and follower of Jesus.
