At last count, Ong Hock Siew had scaled Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia’s highest peak, no fewer than 55 times. Not only that, this seasoned Malaysian climber specializes in taking disabled groups to the summit. Former banker turned successful entrepreneur and sought-after leadership trainer, Ong Hock Siew brings a love of adventure into everything he does – including reaching others for Christ. It wasn’t always like that . . . 4
LEADING THE Ong Hock Siew ADVENTURE A typical Jahai village home. Orang Asli literally means “natural people” or “aboriginal people.” They form 18 tribal groups, of which the Jahai are one. 5
“For many years, attending church was just a habit. Business took up most of my time, and I had no zeal or passion for Christ,” he says. In 2005, Hock Siew attended Haggai Institute on Maui. He says, “Session by session, my stiff neck was loosened. One night I wept with tears of regret for the years of neglect and then with tears of joy for how the Lord could still be merciful enough to receive me back to Him. “I returned to Malaysia with a new resolve and purpose. I asked the Lord to open doors for me to serve Him. He placed me in the Chinese church where my wife is pastor.” Hock Siew took the skills and training he received from Haggai Institute and used them to fuel his new passion for god. Through his church, he spearheaded efforts to reach a remote Malaysian tribe called the Jahai Orang asli. “When we started, the village was almost virtually non-Christian and the children had no access to education or amenities. The villagers were in poor health and their life expectancy was short,” he says. A female member of Ong’s leadership team reads from the Bible and shares stories with some of the young children in the village. 6
