“My goal in 2013 was to try and learn Southwest Florida's inshore fishery. Now that the year is over, I can look back at my logs and start to understand the area’s top spe- cies; reds, trout and snook. Going into 2014 I will be able to compare notes letting me maximize and narrow down my time spent chasing those species and begin to focus on others as well as the freshwater fishery.”
“When it comes to fish- ing, Florida is probably the most diverse in the country. It's pretty amaz- ing. Best part of it is the pressure of so many an- glers and the fact that every thing is prey here. Makes it difficult some- times. I love the hunt and the obstacles of fishing here. It's not just going out and throwing a bait in the water to be successful. You need to bring your game to be consistent.”

COMMUNITY By Tammy Wilson Born from that group and a need to expand to cover more of the east coast of FL, the Space Coast Kayak Fishing Club was formed a year and a half ago by Charles Levi, Jr. With over 500 members at this time, it’s a growing community of like-minded anglers whose fo- cus is mainly on the Indian River Lagoon system, which includes the Mosquito Lagoon and the Banana River. Like the OKFC, the SCKA also has adopted an area on the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge to keep clean. Clean-ups are a regular part of the SCKA get- togethers. Scheduled trips, cookouts, tournaments, fund- raisers and even movie premiers about members are an- other big part of the community events. If it has to do with fun in Florida’s waters, there’s a place for it. From all day family trips down the Econ River to small out- ings to large tournaments, members of the community are always showing up. These communities are made up of men and women (don’t for a second think those women can’t fish!) and their families. Children are quickly becoming a main focus of the SCKA and it is looking into having a kids’ tournament in the near future, as well as just a family day of fishing together, to focus more on getting entire families out there on the water in 2014. There is also a Team Estrogen vs. Team Testoster- one tournament to be made up due to inclement weather in the works. This was created in an attempt to get more of the club’s women out on the water. It’s not all about the fun, though. Safety is an important consideration as well. Kay- aks by Bo, one of the home meeting spots for SCKA, and the occasional east coast OKFC meeting spots, plans to host a once a year American Heart Association CPR and First Aid class for members of the community who wish to go on the water with more education on what to
do in the event of an emergency out there. It’s also a great place to go and learn about all of the safety equipment available for kayak anglers on the water. If you are look- ing for kayaks, fishing gear, equipment, event information or kayak club members in the area, start at the stores that support the community… Mosquito Creek Out- doors in Orlando, Harry Goode’s in Mel- bourne, and Kayaks by Bo and KBB Out- fitters in Titusville. Rigging Your Kayak YOUR Way By Luther Cifers President of YakAttack LLC You’re the proud owner of a brand new fishing kayak, or at least what will soon become a fish- ing kayak. It might be your first or it might be your fifth, but either way you have the same question to answer, “How should I rig it?” This is a pretty big deal, right? You’re going to drill holes, spend money, spend time, and in the end either appreciate or tolerate whatever you end up with. The good news is there are plenty of op- tions out there and you can rig your kayak just about any way you want to. The bad news is that there are so many options it can be overwhelming. It’s All About Connections The best way to start this process is to the boat is rigged. You will also continue to consider the conditions and species you are most evolve as an angler and a paddler. But not many anglers have the fit well in some scenarios, but now there are luxury (or the space) of having a kayak that’s more options than ever. If you want versatility in strictly for a single purpose. Most kayak anglers want a setup that will do multiple things well – your setup, remember this: it’s all about connec- often things that demand different things in how tions.
Let’s start with “traditional” connec- tion methods – those that deal with direct connection of a base of some sort to the kayak. The two most common are the RAM ball and socket mount and the post and spline mount. The RAM ball and socket mount is unbeatable for nearly infinite positioning and vibration dampening. The rubber coated ball grips well and is available in several sizes. The two typically seen on kayaks are the 1” ball and the 1.5” ball. The 1” ball is used for light duty applica- tions such as electronics mounts, and the 1.5” ball is used for heavier duty things like rod holders. RAM has an impressive assortment of attachments for this system, and many of these attachments are great It’s All About Connections for rigging kayaks. Using the Mighty Bolt method, the head of the bolt goes into the GearTrac and the device – whatever it may be – is threaded to accept the stud end. This allows many attachments to use the same length bolt without bottoming out or creating other problems. It also makes removing a device as simple as twisting it to loosen the bolt connection and sliding it out of the track. The Mighty Bolt is what makes the GearTrac the most powerful and versatile connection available. There are several advantages to the GearTrac system. The first is that it’s low profile. Ranging from about 3/8” high (GT90) to 1/2” high (GT175), it’s the lowest profile mounting solution available that does not require cutting large holes in your kayak. Another is versatility. Most YakAttack accessories are available with the Mighty Bolt threaded into them, enabling “If you’re a hardcore bass angler you will likely want something different than the guy bottom fishing offshore.” them to be directly attached to the GearTrac. with two rows of screws, making it suitable for But other accessories can be attached as well. direct threading into most kayaks without re- Not long after producing the GearTrac, quiring nuts, washers, or any kind of backing we commissioned RAM to produce the Screw- inside the hull. The Way The Way Thank you for the interview Rusty. How long have you been kayaking? R.D. I have been kayak fishing since 2002. Before it was fishable. What drew you to the sport? R.D. What drew me to the sport was wade fishing in Sarasota Bay. I would go to a spot to wade and was committed to fishing the spot even if the fishing was bad. When I started kayak fishing it gave me the ability to move on to more productive waters if the bite was off. Also the fact that I could throw my kayak in the back of my truck and take it to the many launch sites where I couldn't launch my power boat. 2014 Reader’s 2014 Reader’s Choice Choice Every angler seems to get the same thing for the holidays: BassPro gift cards, new tackle storage, or a certificate to your local kayak fishing warehouse, and with so many products out there to buy, it can be a bit confusing. So we rallied up the troops and asked a select group of read- ers what they will be gearing up with in 2014. The response was outstanding and inspired us to create a new series fit- tingly called The Reader’s Choice, where you inform us what kayak an- glers should be interested in. We gather the information you share and spread the word. This month, we bring you an amazing clothing line, a few lures you should know about, and kayak fishing accessories you just cannot leave home without. Stay tuned to TheFishermansJournal.com for updates. If you have a product the kayak fishing community needs to know about, tell us about it. Just leave a message on our Facebook page >>>>>>> (www.facebook.com/TheFishermansJournal) and we will do the rest! >>>>>>> Thank you and Tight Lines!

RATTLED RATTLED
RATTLED RATTLED By Tray Collins Most hard-bodied lures have their time and place, even when thrown at the right time, the color of the lure can keep fish looking elsewhere. Almost all hard-bodied lures are depth specific; they may move a certain way, have pitch differences, and can be shaped to resemble a specific baitfish. Finding the right hard-bodied lure for every situation can get expensive really fast, but there’s a solution to this. There’s a magic lure by Bill Lewis Lures called the Rat-L-Trap – okay, there’s really no magic associated with this lure but anglers often think so because of its ability to draw bites from quality fish. In my opinion, the Rat-L-Trap is the most versatile hard-bodied lure, only limited by the angler’s imagination. Decades ago Bill Lewis created the Rat-L-Trap, a lipless crankbait that was intended to entice big hungry bass into feeding. The lures work so well at imitating the forage of many different game fish that it’s not uncommon to catch fish that you weren’t targeting, even while fishing in saltwater. The most basic, but effective, way to fish a Rat-L-Trap is with a constant retrieve. You can dictate the Trap’s running depth along the majority of your retrieve by allowing the ‘Trap to sink before you begin reeling it back in. Rat-L-Traps have a sink rate of about a foot per second, knowing that will allow you to put the lure anywhere in the water column. An internet search will bring up other articles that describe advanced ways to retrieve this lure, as stated before a Rat-L-Trap is only limited by your imagination. To build off of the above statement, I want to share some of the lesser seen ‘Traps that Bill Lewis offer. If your local retailer doesn’t offer these ‘Traps, they can be ordered directly from Rat-L- Trap’s website, www.rat-l-trap.com
