Tax Rate – Question:ny time, for a free, initial chat. Text: 07305 355595 [email protected] www.birdandco.ltd axley, Peterborough PE7 3LD n QUESTION: A taxpayer elected to defer their entitlement to state pension for over five years and has subsequently received a significant lump sum. At what tax rate is this taxed? Pete Bird of Bird & Co answers: n ANSWER: HMRC's guidance states that you'll be taxed at your current rate on your lump sum payment. For example, if you're a basic rate taxpayer your lump sum will be taxed at 20%'. Whilst correct this may not be as helpful as it appears. The amount deferred is increased by interest compounded at 2% above Bank Of England base rates. The total is then taxed at the taxpayer's marginal rate on other income. If they are a basic rate taxpayer on income excluding the lump sum the entire lump sum is taxed at 20% - even where the value of the lump sum would otherwise lead to total income beyond the basic rate threshold. It should be remembered that the option to defer taking state pension in order to later receive a lump sum is no longer available for those newly qualifying for the state pension on or after 6 April 2016.
