hamptonhub Tax Traps You wouldn’t usually expect a family law specialist to be writing on the subject of tax liability, but in dealing with financial settlements arising out of a divorce, and indeed a cohabitation split, you can’t advise clients properly without flagging up potential tax liabilities. One of the major considerations is Capital Gains Tax in property transfers. Many people assume that transferring the former family home from one spouse to the other, often the wife staying in the home with younger children, could not give rise to a CGT. This is not correct. If the transfer does not take place within the tax year of separation, that is before April 6th of the year following separation, there could be a charge for CGT as at market value, even for an outright gift. CGT on a marital home on divorce should therefore be considered carefully. The same goes for transfers or sales of investment properties owned by spouses which are disposed of as part of a financial settlement. You must factor in the CGT liability in assessing the equity of such properties or you could be seriously short changed. Family law solicitors are not authorised to give substantive tax advice, but we can flag up the pitfalls and point you in the right direction for qualified accountancy advice. It is mooted in the next Finance Act that the period for divorce transfers will be increased to three years from separation, but this of course may not come in to law. Always consult the professionals when you have property transactions within a relationship split. h Certified Public Accountants HMRC business checks were largely placed on hold during the Covid n HMRC should provide yres, dpbaursptsnoianemnerdesseshbemiprsiis,ec,af.ssApmwosaeiHnllllMtleaimRsrsCiatolehlndiatshscpootehwmcettpsroaeoncsfotieapsret button, Pete Bird of Bird & Co offers a minimum of one week’s when HMRC comes calling. notice of a proposed business check. This month, one of our trainees, Elizabeth Disdel is exploring the season of change out on the reserve. As a trainee Reserve Warden in Peterborough, you have the privilege of seeing a plethora of different animal life, insect life, and plant life. I have been working with Froglife for almost four months now, and I have enjoyed every second of it. As we enter October, the middle month of Autumn, the jobs that need to be carried out over the reserves play into the echoes of Summer that came before. The once lush green grass needs strimming, reeds once a housing nesting chicks and doting parents need cutting back, bat boxes need attention, and vegetation from newt fencing needs chopping back before the newts enter their brumation period. The hustle and bustle of the Summer is over; I need to rest, Mother Nature says, and we respond with helping hands, making sure that wildlife is tended to in this period of shift. Whilst the world of wildlife is changing, the world of humans – small ones in particular – also begins to shift. As the school holidays come to an end, young people find themselves embarking on the latest adventures that a new school year brings. However, as a final hoorah before the summer holidays THINGS TO LOOK OUT came to an end, many children and their parents attended the FOR THIS OCTOBER annual Hampton Nature Reserve Community Day, bringing with n Feathers – birds moult them smiles, laughter, and a sense of wonder. Traditionally, in Irish mythology, birch is said to be full of the light can identify which one! of the warrior-god, Lugh. Although associations like this is largely forgotten, it is nice to imagine that the turning of leaves from pale green to fiery gold acts as a beacon for wildlife – behold, Autumn is in full swing! Take your time to prepare for change, take as many deep breaths as you need, and if you feel lost, tilt your chin upwards towards my lofty russet crown, and remember that change is okay. One of the many delights of Autumn is feasting on apples. In Greek Mythology, apples are regarded as precious and magical – representing knowledge and immortality. Who wouldn’t want a bite of that? timeout Following their acclaimed son et lumière performance at Peterborough Cathedral last November, Luxmuralis will be bringing their art projection The Beginning to the Cathedral from Wednesday 23rd to Saturday 26th November 2022. Luxmuralis return to the Cathedral with a spectacular sound and light show This sequel to The Angels are Coming will once again transform the magnificent west front and nave of Peterborough Cathedral with light. The show is based around the Nativity story and timed to coincide with the start of the Advent season. It promises to be a stunning experience for all the family and the perfect start to the Christmas season. The audience first of all see a colourful light projection onto the outside of the Cathedral, accompanied by music composed by David Harper. Then they enter the medieval building to experience an immersive light and sound installation, this time inspired by the fragility and beauty of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Visitors who saw The Angels are Coming by Luxmuralis at Peterborough last year described the show as “magnificent, beautiful and festive”, “truly memorable and mesmerising” and “a very moving experience from start to finish.”This year’s presentation promises to be just as unforgettable. The Artistic Director of Luxmuralis, Peter Walker, said: “We are delighted to return to the Cathedral and present this new adapted work this Christmas. The Peterborough audience is fantastic and the city comes alive during Advent. We look forward to working again with the Cathedral team and seeing individuals and families return and enjoy this uplifting light show and beautiful music.” The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough said: “I know how much visitors enjoyed the light show from Luxmuralis last year and we can’t wait to see this year’s presentation. Advent and Christmas are always very special times at Peterborough Cathedral and this will be a wonderful way to be reminded of the Nativity story in a fresh and exciting way as we begin our Christmas preparations.” Ticket prices for the light show have been frozen at last year’s levels for the Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with a small rise for the Friday and Saturday evenings. Entry to the show is by timed ticket and early booking is advised. The tickets on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th November are £7.50 adults, £6 children (U12) and £20 family (2 adults, 2 children or 1 adult, 3 children). The tickets for Friday 25th and Saturday 26th November are £8 adults, £6.50 children (U12) and £25 family (2 adults, 2 children or 1 adult, 3 children). Tickets are not required for children under 3 years old. A booking fee applies. For more information or to book please visit peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/luxmuralis. timeout What’s your favourite? I have so many favourites I couldn’t tell you them all! My favourite drink is tea & orange juice (I cannot choose). One of my favourite songs is ‘What a wonderful world’ by Louis Armstrong. Favourite food - bread (brown & seedy). And my favourite season is without a doubt Autumn. I feel romantic in the autumn. (it’s gotta happen sometime!!) The air can be misty & hazy. The smells from the fields are Devine. From harvest time to the new year there’s so much to enjoy, including my birthday and my favourite time of year!! I’m an early to rise early to bed type so I love the early fresher starts and quite enjoy the nights a little darker. I don’t feel like I MUST still be bouncing about at 8pm (more like 6pm for me) I like my cosy loungewear (yeah ok, pyjamas). I love Halloween. I love bonfire night even more. Fireworks are magical. I adore the 1st of December as it means I can tidy down the workshop for our festive wreath making. And out comes the mincemeat for our new fave. Move over mince pies, it’s all about the Chrimble crumble at Baker’s Cottage!!! These days my loved ones & I head to Norfolk for our Christmas break. And I can’t wait this year as I’ve started taking mini swim dips in each part of the Norfolk coastline. Snettisham, Heacham, Old Hunstanton already done. By the time you read this I should have dipped my little trotters into Holme & Thornham harbour and Brancaster Bay. I’ll keep you posted. Christmas Day morning, I fully intend to strut into the sea at Heacham South beach. I’m currently in training with my Wim Hoff cold showers! Do you share any of my favourites?
