Works rangedfrom relief-printmaking, cyanotype camera-less photograph processing, oil painting, sculpture, installation, film and whocould forget how one student had built and programmed her work drawing mechanism which digitally reinterpretedan academic drawing of a skull. This was an outstanding display of the talent of this year’s A Level artists.GCSE Art and Design ExhibitionnThis year’s GCSE Art and Design exhibition was a rich display demonstrating our students outstanding commandof technique as well their ability to be innovative in their use of specialist materials and processes. FREE AND LOYAL ART THOU Development Public Lecture – Shakespeare Shakeup In an evening devoted to the Donmar Warehouse’s all-female Shakespeare trilogy, film and stage director, Phyllida Lloyd, and producer Kate Pakenham (an Old Dolphin), provided us with an insider's view of the project from its inception through to its imminent arrival on BBC 4 and BBC iPlayer. The conversation kicked off with Phyllida and Kate recounting how the trilogy came about and the motivations behind the decision to have an all-female cast for each of the three plays. Phyllida explained that, while Shakespeare's comedies include some wonderful female roles, they also tend to box women into the domestic sphere or present them as objects of male desire. Choosing Julius Caesar as the first production, a drama in which only two of the 32 named roles are for women (both loyal wives), enabled actresses to fully inhabit the powerful world of ambition, politics and war. A performer who gained universal acclaim for her roles in the trilogy was Harriet Walter, a major force behind the project. In a review for the Sunday Times, one of Godolphin’s own past pupils, Maxie Szalwinska, compared the experience of watching Walter's Brutus to 'witnessing alchemy' and it was fascinating to hear first-hand accounts of this player’s formidable talent. Clips of filmed versions of the stage productions allowed us to see this for ourselves, as well as illuminating some of the key areas of discussion. An hour passed by in a flash and, inevitably, some questions had to be left unanswered, not least why Prince Hal was a Chelsea supporter! Judging by the audience response to the evening, a return visit would be more than welcome.18 THE GODOLPHIN AND LATYMER SCHOOL WWW.GODOLPHINANDLATYMER.COM

FREE AND LOYAL ART THOU News Wrap Primary Mathematics Challenge Nine local prep schools sent teams of four Year 5 pupils to compete in the seventh annual Godolphin and Latymer Maths Challenge which consisted of four exciting rounds that challenged the teams to work together on a variety of problem solving activities. The first two rounds focused on team work and strategy, and by break time, Glendower Prep had taken an early lead. After a well-earned break of juice and KitKats, teams had eight minutes to solve a series of questions in the Shuttle Round. Impressively, almost every school received the bonus points for finishing the rounds early, but Notting Hill Prep came out on top and into first place. We finished with the Relay Round which consisted of some maths and a lot of running around. All nine schools did extremely well and seemed pleased with their multi-coloured pens for taking part.
