Circular on Priests Retreat Dear Rev. Fathers and my dear Brothers and Sisters in Jesus Christ, Greetings of prayer and peace from Thattil Pithavu, Shamshabad! The Annual Retreat of our Rev. Fathers is one of the most important spiritual renewal programs of the Diocese. Jesus invited his beloved disciples: 'let us cross the river, go to a lonely place and rest a while' (Mark 6:31). The retreat is Jesus' call to all the Priests to be with Him and experience an intense encounter. This year the Retreat is scheduled to be held online from 27th September to 1st October 2021. Bishop Mar Joseph Pamplany, auxiliary Bishop of Thalasserry Archdiocese, has graciously consented to preach the retreat. I earnestly request all the faithful to keep praying for the success of the Retreat and sanctification of our Priests. Please keep our Fathers in your family prayers, daily Mass and other activities of prayer and penance. Myself, and our Fathers will keep you and your intentions in our prayers. Invoking God'sAbundant Blessings on all of you, Yours in our Lord Jesus Christ, Mar Raphael Thattil Bishop of Shamshabad 4

ETTU NOMBU-Historical View Ettu Nombu or the Eight Days Lent in preparation for the Feast of Nativity of Mary, Mother of Jesus, is a solemn tradition celebrated by the Saint Thomas Christians in Kerala, India. The custom is observed in the Oriental Orthodox (Jacobite and Orthodox) and the Eastern Catholic (Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara Catholic) Churches, the Syrian Christians of India and also in Arabian countries. It culminates in the celebration of the Feast of Nativity. The eight days of lent is rigorously observed from the 1st to 8th day of September with fasting, penance and charitable activities. It is more a zealous traditional custom of fasting handed over through centuries than being a canonical precept. This practice is said to have been originated in connection with the Islamic invasion and the subsequent fall of Kodungallur, a Christian centre in Kerala. There are different versions about the origin of the Ettunombu. Bar Ebroyo (Bar Hebraeus) narrates that there existed in the 7th century a town called Heera near Basra, which was predominantly a Christian township. The then Caliph of Baghdad captured this town and appointed a fanatic Muslim as the Governor, who feverishly implemented every dictum of the Caliph. The Caliph was known for his cruelty and craving for beautiful women. Enamoured by the beauty and charm of the women of Heera he decided to reach there in three days. The chastity and modesty of the women of Heera were at stake. They sought refuge in the Church of St. Mary. The priest declared an uncompromising lent for three days invoking the intercession of mother Mary. On the 3rd day, in the middle of the Holy Qurbana, a golden beam of light flashed down from above, then spread to illuminate the whole Church. It is said that the Priest had a 17

vision of Mother Mary and also heard her saying, “Do not be afraid; peace be to you – Rejoice. The Caliph is no more. Tribulations are over”. The priest then turned to the people and they could see an aura around the Priest's face as he relayed the message. The whole congregation praised the Lord and thanked Mary for her intercessory prayers. The women then decided to observe a lent for eight days in commemoration of this event. They firmly believed that Mother Mary helped to safeguard their chastity, modesty and dignity. In the present context of the 'so called 'love jihad' and Islamic fundamentalist movements, ISIS the celebration of Ettunombu has a specific significance as far as the purity, security, and dignity of our young girls and youth. By the 3rd century St. David (an Episcoppa) came to India from Basra and evangelized people. This was followed by the Knanaya Migration in the 4th century. Iraqi migrants of the 8th century further spread this tradition. St. Mary’s Cathedral, Manarkad, Kottayam, under the jurisdiction of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, is believed to have re-established the 8-Day lent as a popular devotion.Archaeological findings prove that the stone inscriptions on memorial stones at the Church are set up at the tombs in 910A.D. and 920AD in Malayalam and Tamil scripts prevalent 600 years ago. St. Mary’s Church, Meenangadi is the first church to adopt the 8 day lent in the Malabar region. Presently this traditional lent and the Feast of Nativity is celebrated solemnly in the Syro-Malabar Church. 18

SILCHAR SYRO MALABAR CATHOLIC MISSION - NORTH EAST INDIA The Silchar Mission marked its humble but hallowed beginning when the Eparchy of Irinjalakuda was invited to start a mission by bishop Mar Raphael Thattil in the Northeast region of the eparchy of Shamshabad. Mar Pauly kannookadan, bishop of Irinjalakuda accepted the Divine invitation and the Bishops of Shamshabad and Irinjalakuda respectively Mar Raphael Thattil and Mar Pauly Kannookadan made an agreement and named the mission as SILCHAR SYRO- MALABAR CATHOLIC MISSION- in short Silchar Mission - with St. Paul the Apostole of the Gentiles as the Heavenly Patron.

Silchar mission territory is comprising of eight civil districts of the federal state of Tripura namely Dhalai, Sipahijala, Khowai, Gomathi, Unakoti, North Tripura, South Tripura, west Tripura and Eight civil districts Eight Civil districts of Mizoram namely Aizawl, Kolasib,Lawngtlai,Lunglei,Ma mit,Saiha,Serchhip,Champhai, and Three civil districts of the federal state of Assam namely Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi at present part of the Eparchy of Shamshabad. A challenging evangelical mission commenced with the blessing of the first mission house at Kumulwng near Agarthala, the capital of Tripura, by Rev.Msgr.Joy Paliekkara (Vicar General,

Eparchy of Irinjalakuda),on 15th August, 2019. One of the graceful blessings and probably the first among the many milestones to cross, is the translation of Syro-Malabar Qurbana text into the tribal language, Kokborok (Twipra) which is the biggest among the many tribal languages found in Tripura. It is for the first time in history that the Syro-Malabar Qurbana text is translated into a tribal language. On 24th January, 2020, the first Palliative care and Hospice under the mission was inaugurated by Mr. Mewar Kumar Jammathiya (Minister for Tribal Welfare, Assam), at the Sacred Heart Mission House, Kumulung. The first vehicle of the Palliative Care

Unit was flagged off by Rt.Rev. DR. Lumen Montiero, bishop of Agarthala, on 11th February, 2020. On 15 August 2020 the website of the mission was inaugurated, with the blessings of Mar Pauly Kannookadan. (www.syromalabarsilcharmissi on.org) The year 2020 witnessed the advent of many religious communities to Silchar mission. Sisters of Charity of Vincent De Paul,(SCV), CMC, FCC and Holy Family congregations established their convents in the mission . They extend their valuable services in the field of Education, Health Care & Social Development. These congregations chalk out and execute a good number of charitable activities, focusing on the overall development of

the tribal community and the workers of the tea estates and brick kilns of the region. At present there are five mission stations with 14 communities and five priests are actively involved in the ministry and two priests are doing their studies in missiology at Shillong. 14 Sisters are zealously engaged in their ministries like village touring, mobile palliative care, formal and informal education, preaching and faith formation and other socio cultural and charitable activities together with the guidance and support of three experienced indigenous catechists. No doubt, the entry of the Syro- Malabar Mission will prove beneficial to the people of the region and the Church itself. Fr. Titus Kattuparambil (Mission Co-ordinator)
