Academic Annual Report, 2021-2022 MAINE MEDICAL CENTER GLICKMAN LAUDER FAMILY DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE
MICHAEL R. BAUMANN, MD, FACEP - PROFESSOR, GLICKMAN LAUDER FAMILY ENDOWED CHAIR OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE Welcome We are please to present this summary of our collective scholarly work. Taken together, the three components of our mission focus our energies on achieving national academic prominence through our contributions to education, leadership, and research while providing the highest quality clinical care and service to our patients and community. We have been fortunate to consistently enjoy success in these areas and look forward to an increasingly bright future as we continue our collective development as clinicians, educators, and scholars.
Mission, Vision, and Values W O R K I N G TO G E T H E R S O O U R C O M M U N I T I E S A R E T H E H E A LT H I E S T I N A M E R I C A In addition to providing clinical care, our faculty Mission, Vision, and Values and residents are regular volunteers at our local vaccination centers, helping our community to Maine Medical Center Mission remain healthy throughout the pandemic. Maine Medical Center is dedicated to maintaining and improving the health of the community it serves by: • Caring for our community • Educating tomorrow’s caregivers • Researching new ways to provide care. Department of Emergency Medicine Research & Quality Mission The Maine Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine shall maintain a Division of Research and Quality with commitments to academic progress, achievement, and to clinical care that is safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable. The Division of Research and Quality shall strive to maintain a standard of excellence, ethics, and peer-recognition as a contributor to Emergency Medicine research, quality, and academics. Department of Emergency Medicine Research & Quality Vision The Maine Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine will become a nationally recognized center for excellence in Emergency Medicine academics, research, and health care quality.
Education EDUCATING TOMORROW’S CAREGIVERS Emergency Medicine Education The Emergency Medicine residency training program at Maine Medical Center has continued to ourish over the last academic year. Despite COVID, our residency has seen unprecedented applications year over year and exemplary match results. In addition to our academic successes outlined below, our residents have continued to provide world class care to an increasing volume of patients with higher acuity illnesses and injuries in the emergency department. We are a three-year program and currently accept 10 resident physicians per intern class. Our annual applicant pool of medical students exceeds 1000, of which we interview approximately 120 and accept 10 through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). As per the NRMP, applicants matched at MMC have been above the 75th percentile of all applications nationally for Step 1 and Step 2 scores for 3 of the last 4 years. The same can be said for ΑΩΑ membership. This year’s incoming class will join us from medical schools across the United States, including Yale, Dartmouth, University of Colorado, University of Utah, University of Washington, Tufts University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins. Our ABEM certi cation rate for our resident graduates remains at 100%. Our 5-year written boards pass rate is 95% and our oral boards pass rate is 100%. Historically, approximately 30% of our graduates have gone into academic positions (fellowship or faculty), well above the national average of 18% for 3-year programs, and this year 20% of our graduating seniors are entering traditional academic fellowships and one is doing a fellowship through the military. In addition, 35% of our graduates have stayed in Maine, an underserved area, and 65% have chosen to leave the area for practice or further training. Drs. Casey MacVane, MD, MPH and Timothy Fallon, MD have continued to provide leadership for our residency training program. In addition, Drs. Rachel Williams, MD, Lauren Wendell, MD and Patricia Weems, MD have provided additional support for the residency as Assistant Residency Directors each covering one class of the residency. The Ultrasound Fellowship program has enjoyed continued success this year and is poised to graduate two fellows in June. As noted in the pages that follow, our ultrasound group has been very academically productive and has matched a three new fellows who will begin in July 2022. The student clerkship also continues to be an area of success. Led by Drs. Wendell and Zimmerman, we have had many students from diverse medical schools participate in our clinical elective, with additional students participating in Research, Ultrasound and Toxicology electives. Our clerkships continue to ll nearly a year ahead of time, often with more than 50 applicants per block. Our wilderness medicine elective, which had been held in Utah, but is transitioning to a Maine based curriculum, is the oldest wilderness elective for medical students and attracts students from around the country. Our faculty regularly provide research mentorship and training for Tufts students completing the MD/MPH program, as well as for other health professions students. if if lf
Research RESEARCHING NEW WAYS TO PROVIDE CARE Emergency Medicine Research at Maine Medical Center The Department of Emergency Medicine at Maine Medical Center has a strong commitment to the advancement of knowledge within our specialty. We share a philosophy that emphasizes intellectual curiosity, evidence-based medicine, and improved patient outcomes based on strong science. Dr. Tania Strout, PhD, RN, MS serves as the Research Director, leading our efforts within Emergency Medicine. All academic faculty are expected to support resident research and are encouraged to invest in their own academic growth and achievement. As academic clinicians, we have a strong sense of responsibility to teach our medical students and residents the principles of original investigation, research ethics, and patient safety. Research within the Department is diverse and encompasses many domains with the addition of COVID clinical trials in the past year. Research accomplishments including publications, presentations and grants by faculty are detailed in this report. Caption
