Between-the-Images brings together 20 illustrated essays written by Raymond Bellour between 1981 and 1989. Considering the works and the strategies of artists and filmmakers such as Kuntzel, Godard, Marker, Bergman, Antonioni, Hill, and Viola, he examines the slow but inexorable change in moving images, putting an emphasis on three major areas of transformation: between stillness and movement, inside the photographic analogy, and between language and image. At once poetic and concisely argued, his essays historicize the creative passages between film, photography, and video, now pervasive in contemporary culture. Raymond Bellour is one of the world's most prominent fi lm and video theorists and critics. He is Emeritus Research Professor at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifi que (CNRS) in Paris.
