This project was part of the final phase of the States of Guernsey “Education Development Plan Programme 1” for the renewal of all the Island’s secondary high schools, post-16 and special Orchard Farm, Slough education facilities. Case Study 1 Downe House School (with Buro Happold) Project Murray Centre This project was won in invited competition in 2015, and represents a new centrepiece for the School at the heart of its woodland campus in Cold Ash. Location Downe House School, Cold Ash, Thatcham Originally, as with the Old Etonian site, the School had several ideas for the building’s ultimate use, but the accommodation now consists of a Description Welcome foyer, cafe, welcome foyer and cafe for parents, students and staff; a multi-purpose library, 6th Form Hub, offices, multi- lecture theatre; library; offices and 6th Form Hub. The Centre was purpose theatre specifically designed as a ‘stepping stone’ from school to university, and it offers a mature environment with flexible space for highly adaptable use. Case Study 2 Camden Mill (with Buro Happold) Project Listed Mill Remodelling This project involved the internal remodelling of a listed mill on the River Avon; the Bath HQ of Buro Happold. Location Bath The design turned a series of dark, low spaces into a light-filled Description Conversion of listed generous reception area with glass-fronted meeting rooms. A mill building to reception, meeting ‘knowledge cafe’ with terrace, library, break-out working and social rooms, cafe, library and Knowledge spaces is located adjacent to the reception, for use of visitors and Centre for Buro Happold doubling-up as a public venue for events and lectures. Contract Traditional The project involved stripping the building back to its original fabric, the creation of new structural openings and the introduction of discreet new Construction value c£1m services.
