Isaacs (https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/laws-for-building-a-sukkah/) 1. According to Bet Shammai, the sukkah must be large enough to contain a man’s head, most of his body, and his table (Talmud, Sukkah 2:7). 2. The walls of the sukkah may be made of any material, but must be sturdy enough to withstand an ordinary wind (Code of Jewish Law, Orach Chayim 630: 10). 3. It is meritorious to start building the sukkah immediately after Yom Kippur, even if it is Friday, because a chance to perform a precept should not be put off. One should choose for it a clean site. Everyone should build the sukkah, even if one is an eminent person (Code of Jewish Law, Condensed Version, Chapter 134). Continued, p. 15

Pick a fund — General, Rabbi's Discretionary Fund, Cantor's Discretionary Fund, Building Fund, Shabbos Club, Hebrew School, Prayer Books or Bonnie Lynne Scholarship. You can call, mail or e-mail your donation to the office. This is a great way to help your shul and acknowledge life cycle events in someone's life. Nanuet Hebrew Center will send a card to the person letting them know that you made a donation in their honor or sending them condolences. We also will list your donation in the Bulletin. You may also make a donation to someone that is not a member of the shul. They will also receive a note as well, as long as you supply us with their address. Yearning for Real Peace - by Rabbi Paul Kurland - Nanuet Hebrew Center A few weeks back, while studying the weeklyTorah portion, the laws of war jumped out at me. It became clear that there is a good reason why the Torah doesn’t just outlaw war altogether and command peace. The Torah wasn’t given to angels, but to human beings and human beings are, and will forever be, imperfect. The Torah guides us in this real world, not some impossible perfect world. Sadly, war is sometimes an evil necessity. Still, it is towards peace that we must forever strive. Before going to war, the Torah teaches that we must offer terms of peace. Later Rabbinic law teaches that the attacker should hold the peace offer out for at least three days, giving the enemy time to consider. When it comes to peace we must never stop dreaming or trying. In Rockland County recently (and around our nation and world for far too long) the headlines have been screaming out too often about conflict and fighting; an all-out war of words. Jeremiah cried out, \"Peace, peace, but there is no peace.\" He was surely describing today’s world and the climate in Rockland County, N.Y. as well. Therefore, we need to be reminded of how the Torah teaches us to conduct war, conflict and disagreement. We are taught to do so in as ethical a way as possible, considering all the cruelties and tragedies. It is quite clear that we aren’t finding enough people who are putting these teachings into practice. On its most basic level, peace is a cease-fire. But this is only the first step. As John F. Kennedy once said, \"The mere absence of war is not peace.\" In our tradition we know that the word shalom has a deeper meaning. It comes from the Hebrew root meaning wholeness or completeness. To me it’s like a jigsaw puzzle, with all pieces in the proper place. Real peace is a sense of wholeness where the two parties find out how to fit together while maintaining the dignity of the other. As we continue to fight with each other in Rockland over vile videos and overcrowding it is difficult to find those who are reaching out for real peace; a peace of wholeness, a peace of completeness, a peace of dignity. Peace will only happen when both sides see the other and recognize both their humanity and their legitimate aspirations. Peace will only happen when good minded people come together to explore and debate the issues without demonizing the other. Only those who can reach out to the other with the desire to find the harmony of compromise will be able to succeed. Let us find those people and bring them together. Jeremiah just may be correct when he recognized, \"Peace, peace, but there is no peace.\" Our dream must be to finally learn how to put into practice the sweet vision of the song we sang as youngsters, \"Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.\" It’s really the only way we can ever hope to build a more beautiful world. From the Co-President As I scrolled through my emails, I came across one that was entitled, “Preparing for the High Holidays”. Although I subscribe to a number of recipe sharing sites, this email held particular interest for me. Who couldn’t use a new recipe for brisket or one for a different side dish to make for holidays? Much to my surprise, this email contained no recipes, had nothing to do with cooking or anything that involved the physical preparation for the holidays. It was all about taking stock of oneself. As the holidays are fast approaching, we need to properly prepare ourselves so that we can fully experience their true meaning. Most, if not all of us, know the dates when the holidays are to be celebrated, and have been finalizing our plans for them. We know who will host each night, and who will bring each dish. We’ve made our grocery lists. We’ve paid for our tickets for services, and hopefully, have received them. Most likely, we’ve even selected what we’ll wear to synagogue. And yet, despite all that preparation, we often neglect to prepare our hearts and minds for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The holidays need not feel somber and heavy. Rather it’s a time of inspiration, to celebrate reconnection with our family, our friends, and our faith, and of new beginnings for ourselves and our lives. Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish New Year, literally means head of the year. It’s the time to take stock, gain clarity, and a deeper sense of self-awareness. The Hebrew word Rosh means head and Shanah means to change. So, another way we can interpret the meaning of Rosh Hashanah is to change our mind set. The shofar is like a spiritual alarm clock, awakening us from our mental slumber. It’s a signal to us to focus on what we would like to change and to begin to take the necessary actions. Tashlicht, which means cast off, is a symbolic ritual usually performed on the first day of Rosh Hashanah after the afternoon prayers, and involves throwing pieces of bread into a flowing body of water. These pieces of bread which are tossed signify the casting off our sins of the previous year. Each year we are given the opportunity to begin the new year with a clean slate. By weeding out our wrong-doings and misdeeds from the past year, we make room to sow new seeds for the growth and betterment of our selves. In between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we’re given 10 days of introspection to reflect upon where we were last year, where we are this year, and to contemplate and identify what we’d like to change about ourselves. As we gain clarity though introspection, we emerge fresh, renewed, ready to face the world as our best selves. So this year, come into the High Holidays prepared. Plan for the meals and choose your outfits, but make sure to take time to ready your heart and mind as well. When you hear the sound of the Shofar, let it wake you and your resolve to do and be better than you’ve ever been. I’m sure that Jeff’s family and the families of the trustees on the Board of Directors join with me and my family to wish you L’Shanah Tovah Umetukah. May 5780 bring you happiness, good health, peace and all life’s best.   Gail Kaiser, Co-President, Nanuet Hebrew Center October 2019 Tishrei — Cheshvan 5780 NHC Bulletin Page 5

From the Co-President   By the time you read this message, the high holidays will be in full swing. I want to personally thank everyone who have prepared for and conducted the services this year. It is a huge undertaking, and I am always awed by how seemingly smooth it all runs. Once again, Andrew Gordon and Dave Leon have led the efforts as co-chairs of our High Holiday committee. Thank you both for your outstanding contribution and dedication to our shul. It is always difficult to come up with a holiday message for the bulletin, especially when the holiday greeting message was already published the previous month. So, instead, I would like to share with you some very interesting Bulletin Bloopers that have occurred in other synagogues over the past several years. This is excerpted from Bob Meyer from Aish.com. These authentic synagogue announcements were found in shul newsletters and bulletins. All original mistakes in spelling and typing have been left untouched: 1. Don't let worry kill you. Let your synagogue help. Join us for our Oneg after services. Prayer and medication to follow. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our congregation. 2. For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. 3. We are pleased to announce the birth of David Weiss, the sin of Rabbi and Mrs. Abe Weiss. 4. A bean supper will be held Wednesday evening in the community center. Music will follow. 5. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the JCC. Please use the large double door at the side entrance. 6. Rabbi is on vacation. Massages can be given to his secretary. 7. Please join us as we show our support for Amy and Rob, who are preparing for the girth of their first child. 8. We are taking up a collection to defray the cost of the new carpet in the sanctuary. All those wishing to do something on the carpet will come forward and get a piece of paper. 9. If you enjoy sinning, the choir is looking for you! On behalf of my family, Gail’s family, and the families of our board of directors, we want to wish you all a very happy, sweet, and laughter-filled New Year. Cantor Barry’s Tales As I write this, it is the tail end of September. Summer seems like a memory even though it’s only been a few weeks. Time seems to pick up speed as the weeks move faster and faster. I look for opportunities to reflect and connect. Some of these I find in prayer, some in music, others in moments of silence. And I look for opportunities to be a better person. Before we approach G-d for forgiveness, we need to start with our fellow human beings. So for my (many?) offenses over the past year, please accept my apologies. I will try to do better. I hope that you and your family have a good year, a sweet year, a meaningful year. May we be inscribed and sealed in the book of life. L’shanahtovahumetukah (here’s to a good and sweet year) Cantor Barry Kanarek October 2019 Tishrei — Cheshvan 5780 NHC Bulletin Page 9

Continued, from cover 4. There are many different opinions regarding the roofing of the sukkah. However, since we generally cover it with the branches of trees, or with reeds, which are detached products of the soil and not subject to defilement and are not tied together, there is no cause for scruples (Code of Jewish Law, Condensed Version, Chapter 134). 5. Enough boughs should be placed upon the sukkah so as to have more shade than sun. If it has more sun than shade, it is invalid. It is therefore necessary to put on enough branches, so that even if they should dry up, there would still be more shade than sun (Code of Jewish Law, Condensed Version, Chapter 134). 6. A sukkah that is erected underneath the branches of a tree is invalid. Even if the branches by themselves would provide more sun than shade, and the sukkah has been adjusted by means of putting there on extra branches, it is, nevertheless, invalid (Code of Jewish Law, Condensed Version, Chapter 134). 7. The obligation may be fulfilled with a borrowed sukkah but not with one that is stolen. Hence, a sukkah may not be erected on a public place. In an emergency, however, when one has no other sukkah available, one may sit in such a sukkah and say the prescribed benediction (Code of Jewish Law, Condensed Version, Chapter 134). Hazak I had hoped that by the time I wrote this article, I would have some exciting pictures from our trip to Ellis Island. Since we haven’t gone yet, I don’t have any pictures. Stay tuned to the next bulletin for some amazing pictures. For those of you that were looking forward to our October meeting, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the meeting has been cancelled. Our next meeting will be on November 7. We will be playing some exciting games after the meeting. If you would like to have lunch with us, please remember to bring a dairy meal. Drinks will be available at the meeting. If you are planning ahead, being brought back by popular demand for the December 5 meeting will be our guest speaker George Wood of TRIAD. George is a retired police detective who will be speaking to us about SCAMS. So, if you have been scammed or would like to learn more about the current scams out there or maybe if you were interested in doing a scam but would like to know the consequences before you partake in this endeavor, become a member of Hazak (if you qualify) and come join us at the December 5 meeting. Don’t forget to bring your own dairy lunch. (MHIP). Just one more thing for you to think about: You know that little indestructible black box that is used on planes, why can’t they make the whole plane out of the same substance? Hope everyone has an easy fast. Enjoy your time in the Sukkah. Arthur Fishman – Hazak Editor–in-Chief Page 16 NHC Bulletin Tishrei — Cheshvan 5780 October 2019

In Our Mailbox Dear NHC Family, Ken and I would like to thank everyone for their good wishes and donations in honor of our grandson Jared and his new bride, Gabriela. This is such an unbelievably special time in our lives. We are so thankful to be able to share this with our family at the Nanuet Hebrew Center. Love, Phyllis and Ken Benjamin Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you! We really appreciate your help, kind words and beautiful funeral service for our mother. Jill and Peter Rosenfeld Did you know? Cantor Kanarek posts many of the prayers that we sing every weekend online. Go to www.nanuethc.org. Select “From the Bimah” then “Cantor” and then “Music and Prayer Page.” Do you need community service hours? Would you like to help the environment and the NHC? We are looking for a few volunteers to come to the Shul once a week to pick up the recyclable items (paper and plastic) and bring them to proper recycling bins. The town does not pick up these items from the NHC. If you are interested and would like to volunteer, please call Kari@845-708-9181 October 2019 Tishrei — Cheshvan 5780 NHC Bulletin Page 17

Tzedakah / ‫צדקה‬ Tzedakah received and recorded by the 10th of the month or the first business day after, will be acknowledged on these pages. If the office is closed because of holidays falling on these days, only donations received before the holiday will appear. Please also note that acknowledgment or lack thereof on these pages does not constitute an official receipt of your donation by the shul. In the event that acknowledgment of your donation does not appear, please let the synagogue office know and we will print it in the next issue of the Bulletin. Planning Ahead Now is the time to start the planning that enhances the work of the congregation by raising the necessary funds so dues need not be raised.
