NANUET HEBREW CENTER AFFILIATED WITH THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM 411 S. LITTLE TOR ROAD, NEW CITY, NY 10956 (845) 708-9181 Visit us at: http://www.nanuethc.org E-mail address: [email protected] May 2019 Nisan — Iyar 5779 Volume 48, Number 9 LAG BA`OMER — the 33rd Day of the Count of the Omer “The name of the righteous is invoked in blessing, but the fame of the wicked rots.” Proverbs 10:7 A 3rd-century synagogue located near the grave of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai On Mt. Meron in the Galilee The Torah lists three pilgrimage festivals: Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot. Yet the largest annual Jewish pilgrimage these days will take place this week during the lesser known holy day of Lag Ba’Omer, or the 33rd day of the 49-day counting of the Omer between Passover and Shavuot. An estimated 250,000 Israelis—men, women and children—are expected to travel to the gravesite of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in the small northern village of Meron in the Upper Galilee near Tzfat over a two- to three-day period. The day is associated with the anniversary of the passing of the Mishnaic sage and Kabbalist Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, also known by the acronym “Rashbi.” It is believed that on the day of his passing, he revealed for the first time teachings that constitute a significant portion of the Zohar, the foundational book of Jewish mysticism. Unlike other Jewish festivals with strict religious observances, Lag B’Omer Continued, p. 3

Most celebrate the day with bonfires and barbecues, making it an attractive celebration to observant and non-observant Jews alike. The day is also associated with the end of a mourning period, in which 24,000 students of the Mishnaic sage Rabbi Akiva are believed to have died fighting the Romans during the bar Kochba rebellion (132-136 C.E.). After the tragic death of his students, only five remained—one of whom was bar Yochai. There is another view that the students died from a plague brought about by disrespecting one another, in violation of Rabbi Akiva’s principle teaching of “loving each other like oneself.” The death of the students is believed to have ceased on Lag B’Omer. In one famous Talmudic tale, found in Tractate Shabbat 33b, the rabbi and his son Elazar spent 12 years in a cave in hiding from the Romans who had condemned the pair to death for their statements against the empire. At the end of 12 years, in which the pair were sustained only by carob, the Prophet Elijah appears and gives the all clear for them to re-enter the world. From: www.timesofisrael.com and www.breakingisraelnews.com Tzedakah Kari Warren For those of you who are not sure of how Tzedakah works — It is really very simple.... The minimum donation is $5.00 (and the dollar amount is NOT included on the card). Pick a fund — General, Rabbi's Discretionary Fund, Cantor's Discretionary Fund, Building Fund, Shabbos Club, Hebrew School, Prayer Books or Bonnie Lynne Scholarship. You can call, mail or e-mail your donation to the office. This is a great way to help your shul and acknowledge life cycle events in someone's life. Nanuet Hebrew Center will send a card to the person letting them know that you made a donation in their honor or sending them condolences. We also will list your donation in the Bulletin. You may also make a donation to someone that is not a member of the shul. They will also receive a note as well, as long as you supply us with their address. If you have any additional questions, please call or e-mail me @ [email protected] May 2019 Nisan — Iyar 5779 NHC Bulletin Page 3

From the President Summertime…The sun embraces you in its warmth. The buzz of bees coming from outside your window. The aromas of wildflowers fill your living room. Summer can easily claim to be the best season of the year. It is not only bright and sunny, but also colorful and joyful. We enjoy spending the long days of summer on the white sand of beautiful beaches or swimming in the clear water of warm seas. It is such a great time because it also brings adventures and travels. With the end of school and working days, summer comes to us with its barbeques in the backyard, long evening walks with your better half, refreshing cold drinks with friends, and a lot of other nice things. A lot of parents even pack up their troubles and send them off to summer camp. Some are of the opinion that the summertime months are a time when we should have a break from it all. In fact, in many synagogues, congregants sometime ask, \"Don't you basically close up for the summer?\" The answer for us, of course, is NO! There isn’t much programming until the High Holidays and when the religious school starts, but Nanuet Hebrew Center never closes. Why? Because we must always connect ourselves to Hashem and our community. This is what we do when we pray together as a minyan. No, NHC doesn't close down for the summer. It’s pulse never stops. But we need davenners or it will. Please take a moment to consider how important regular communal prayer is, not just for those saying Kaddish, but also for each and every one of us. Don't let the pulse stop, particularly when the summer months approach while many are away. Select two or three extra days each month when you or someone in your household can commit to coming. Put it on your calendar. If everyone in our membership did this, there would never be a shortage of minyanaires, and there will always be a strong pulse at NHC–summer, winter, spring and fall. Sisterhood of the Nanuet Hebrew Center Book Discussion Group The book we discussed was Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens. It is the story of a girl who, at age ten, is totally abandoned in the marshlands of North Carolina. The heroine, Kya, teaches herself survival skills with the occasional aid of a kindly neighbor. As a teenager, she and a local boy, Tate (who teaches her to read) have a loving relationship. Another boy, Chase, enters her life, but not in a positive way. The book alternates chapters between the past and the present as a mysterious death is explored. The writing is gripping (as evidenced by the amount of time the book has spent on the best-seller list). Our group felt that there were too many discrepancies in her ability to survive. However, the descriptive imagery of nature was quite compelling. The consensus was that although the book was a really good read, it did not provide quite enough for a discussion group. Marilyn Brenner Future Discussions Wednesday, May 22 – Gateway to the Moon, by Mary Morris Wednesday, July 10 – The Blue Zone, by Andrew Gross Stop & Shop Stop & Shop store is running a school-fundraising program, A+ School Rewards, and we need YOUR help! Women’s Philanthropy at Jewish Federation This year’s Women’s Philanthropy event will be extra special. It will take place Sunday, May 19 and it will be elegant…as it always is. It will be inspiring…as it always is. And it will make you proud to be part of Women’s Philanthropy at Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County. You will be even prouder this year because along with four other wonderful Jewish institutions in Rockland County, we will be honoring an Aishet Chayl…a woman of valor, Lillian Adler, z”L. Lillian, through her work and volunteerism, taught Rockland County the importance of tzedakah and how to act with loving kindness. Lillian's involvement in so many Jewish organizations—including the Federation, where she was a Board member, the Holocaust Museum & Center for Tolerance & Education, Israel Bonds, JCC Rockland, and Rockland Jewish Family Service—serves as an inspiration to each and every one of us and will resonate throughout the county for years. Keynoter, Siggy Flicker, knows a thing or two about what made Lillian tick. Siggy is an Israeli-born American, a staunch supporter of Israel, and the Jewish people. She has a unique message: #KNOW YOUR WORTH, which is all about self- assurance and empowerment. The Jewish Community of Rockland County Brunch honoring Lillian Adler, z”L, will take place at The Rockleigh, 26 Paris Avenue in Rockleigh, NJ, Sunday May 19, 10 am-12 noon. The couvert is $72. Dietary laws will be observed. Please RSVP to www.rjfs.org. May 2019 Nisan — Iyar 5779 NHC Bulletin Page 13

Notes from Catering We have heard many positive comments about how clean and organized the meat kitchen is. It was professionally cleaned. We ask everyone who uses it to please help maintain it. The dairy kitchen is scheduled to be cleaned after Passover. If you or your committee or club have any items, food, appliances, utensils etc. in the dairy kitchen, we ask that you please remove everything until the cleaning is complete. We will re-organize the cabinets and try to accommodate whoever needs storage. Please let us know what you need! We thank you so much for your continued support and look forward to celebrating with you deliciously in the future. Cynthia and Peggy Catering, NHC Page 18 NHC Bulletin Nisan — Iyar 5779 May

Hazak Do you remember that old song lyrics “by the time I get to Phoenix…”? Well, by the time you get this month’s Bulletin, our Hyde Park trip will be over. We all will have had a great time at Eleanor Roosevelt’s house. Stay tuned to next month’s Bulletin for a picture of our group having a wonderful adventure at Hyde Park. The games event at our April meeting was a great success. The winners of Mexican Dominos were the team of Joyce and Yours truly. Our next meeting is scheduled for June 6. I have no idea what we will be doing at this meeting, or who will be in charge. However, if it is anything like the previous meetings you won’t want to miss it. For those of you who read the AARP MAGAZINE there was an article about how to write your own book. It states, “Best way to begin is with a notebook or diary, blindfold the computer; send the phone for a walk.” That is similar to how I write these articles. I take a pen and pad in hand and just make up the rest. Have a wonderful day. Your happy, friendly, cheerful, smiling, laughing, forgetful Bulletin contributor; and sometimes actor, and 50th anniversary person. In Our Mailbox Dear Nanuet Hebrew Center Family, We sincerely appreciate all of the cards and Leagrams that we received in honor of our 50th wedding anniversary. Thank you to Rabbi Kurland and to everyone who participated in the Shabbat Service to make it so personal and meaningful. Beverly Asinofsky made everything run so efficiently by finding everyone that needed to go up to the Bimah. Rabbi Kurland, Kari and Beverly all know how to keep a secret!! It was a huge surprise to us when our daughter, Bonnie, and son-in-law Steve suddenly walked into the Synagogue. It actually brought me to tears. You even arranged for them to receive an Aliyah. How very special! It was our pleasure to celebrate our Simcha with so many family and friends at our special Kiddush in honor of our milestone anniversary. Cynthia and Peggy were very helpful with their advice and making everything run smoothly. We would be remiss if we didn't thank Esther Spiegel for enhancing the Kiddush with her gluten free culinary delights. It means so much to us having made so many friends at NHC. Fondly, Diane and Arthur Fishman Dear NHC Congregants, Thank you for thinking of Selma and for your kindness and sympathy at a time when it was deeply appreciated. Irwin and Matthew Stelzer and Family Dear NHC Family, Thank you so much for your condolences and donations and most importantly, for your support. We are grateful for the minyan services that you brought to our home, led by Rabbi Kurland and Cantor Kanarek, and for your help at a difficult time when Enid Trotiner passed away. Jana and David Fisher Dear Rabbi Kurland, Your kindness, compassion and warmth cannot be measured. You have been there many times over the years to help us through the immediate days following a death in our family. Most recently, you guided us, officiated at a beautiful service in Enid’s memory and led the very personal shiva minyans in our home. Thank you from all of Enid’s family. Sincerely, Jana and David Fisher May 2019 Nisan — Iyar 5779 NHC Bulletin Page 27

Dear Rabbi Kurland, On behalf of myself, Josh’s mom Deborah, Lauren’s parents, Susan and family and especially the “kids” (who aren’t kids anymore, though I still pay his cell phone bill) I wanted to personally thank you for the lovely and touching ceremony you performed on behalf of their behalf. What most people don’t realize is the time you took to personally meet with both of them on multiple occasions so that you could personally get to know them and perform a meaningful service in a truly intimate setting. Oftentimes things become pro forma and so generic that you could be talking about anyone to anybody who happened to be there. Not so on Sunday, so I wanted to thank you for making it so personalized. My “higher authority” expressed to me how meaningful it was and I couldn’t agree more. Once again thanks so much for making the ceremony something that will be remembered and cherished, Yours truly, Bill Jaffe Spokesperson, wedding committee We are grateful for your generous support of our Annual Founders Dinner & Journal. Your contribution allows us to continue serving thousands of Rockland residents with social, cultural, educational and recreational programs at JCC Rockland.
