NANUET HEBREW CENTER AFFILIATED WITH THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM 411 S. LITTLE TOR ROAD, NEW CITY, NY 10956 (845) 708-9181 Visit us at: http://www.nanuethc.org E-mail address: [email protected] January 2020 Tevet — Shevat 5780 Volume 49, Number 5 Esther before Ahasuerus by Giovanni Andrea Sirani , 1630 (Szépmûvészeti Múzeum, Budapest, Hungary) No, it is not Purim yet. In the book of Esther we read that Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus’s palace “in the 10th month, which is the month of Tevet.” (Esther 2:16). The Talmud explains that the month of Tevet was a particularly opportune time, since the cold causes “the body to take pleasure from the body [of another].” (Megillah 13a). The name “Tevet” was adopted by the Jewish people during the Babylonian exile (Rosh Hashanah 18a–b and Rashi ad loc). It is believed to connote “sinking” or “immersing.” This is possibly related to the fact that the heavy winter rainfall turns much of the Middle East into a muddy swamp at this time of year. From the Co-President My family and I feel very fortunate to live in a rather diverse neighborhood. We have developed many friendships with our neighbors and enjoy spending time with them and their families. We have a lovely non-Jewish neighbor who will go out of her way to show that she is both respectful of and interested in Judaism. This last Passover I invited her to join us for our seder, and she was very excited to contribute something to our meal…a challah! Last December 31st she invited us to her home for a New Year’s Eve party. When we came through the door, she greeted us by exclaiming “Shanah Tovah”! Although the rest of her guests had been given festive glittered hats, noisemakers, and paper horns to blow when the clock struck midnight , we were given kippot, groggers, and plastic ram’s horns to blow. That was interesting. As December 31st is again right around the corner, I think the time has come to clarify some things for her. And so, I wrote this… Jewish New Year vs. Secular New Year On December 31st people make their yearly resolutions to eat a smaller quantity of food every day. On Rosh Hashanah we resolve to cut back each day because we’re in training for Yom Kippur. Come January 1st through the 7th, people will (out of force of habit) jot down 2019 when they sign and date something. After Rosh Hashanah, no Jew accidentally wrote 5780 when they filled out their checkbook. At 11:59 pm on December 31st, someone will invariably nudge a family member awake to gawk as the ball in Times Square drops while commenting, “So, isn’t that exciting!”On Rosh Hashanah inevitably a matzah ball will fall onto the floor and someone will exclaim loudly, “So, grab that before someone slips on it!” The last week in December everyone is asking everyone else, “What are your big plans for New Year’s Eve and what are you wearing?” In September no Jew ever inquires where another Jew will be on Rosh Hashanah, nor about their attire. In shul, of course, shvitzing up a storm because the weather never cooperates for donning High Holiday wool suits or pantyhose for the women. And staying home all day doing nothing!?! Not an option. It’s the crucial countdown to midnight, and apparently many people have the habit of kissing someone at the exact stroke of 12:00. But we Jews are different. We spend our New Year celebrations eating and kibbitzing, and it’s going to go on forever so it seems. And as for that kiss, Great Aunt Sophie’s “grab and twist” your cheek will just have to suffice. Ask anyone when the secular New Year will ring in, and they’ll look at you like you’re a mashuganah. But innocently inquire what date Rosh Hashanah falls on this year, and instantly Jews are googling, debating, and texting their Rabbis.  Page 4 NHC Bulletin Tevet — Shevat 5780 January 2020

There’s probably a cool DJ at a New Year’s Eve party, and he’s going to spin all the latest music. But Jews don’t usually expect the Cantor in shul to chant anything new on Rosh Hashanah. But if he did come down off the bimah to sing the Hineni prayer, it would be quite a surprise. A baby is used to personify the start of the New Year, and he’s represented as a chubby tot wearing nothing more than a diaper and a sash across his torso with the number of the new year imprinted on it. Show a Jew an infant like this on Rosh Hashanah or any day of the year, and she’ll kvell over the size of his cute, plump pulkes, and then admonish, “Put some clothes on this boy, otherwise he’ll catch his death of cold, G-D forbid!!” And with that, if you are so inclined, raise a glass of champagne (or Manischewitz wine), because soon we’re going to party like it’s 2020, even though we know it’s 5780. And as for my well- meaning neighbor friend, I’m prepared that next Halloween her grandchildren may show up on my doorstep dressed as Esther and Mordechai! From me and my family, from Jeff, and the rest of the Board of Directors at NHC, we wish you and yours a very happy, healthy, prosperous and peaceful 2020/5780! Gail Kaiser, Co-President, Nanuet Hebrew Center Do you need community service hours? Would you like to help the environment and the NHC? We are looking for a few volunteers to come to the Shul once a week to pick up the recyclable items (paper and plastic) and bring them to proper recycling bins. The town does not pick up these items from the NHC. If you are interested and would like to volunteer, please call Kari@845-708-9181 January 2020 Tevet — Shevat 5780 NHC Bulletin Page 5

Cantor Barry’s Tales A Tale of Two Cities (Be Like a Maccabee) As I write this, Chanukah has not yet begun. But I’m thinking about the juxtaposition of Chanukah and two cities — Jersey City and New City. In Jersey City, anti-Semitic violence left three civilians and one police officer dead. I am amazed that we live in such a world. Perhaps I shouldn’t be; this kind of hate is sadly nothing new, in fact, it’s quite old. I just didn’t expect to see it in my time. The answer to fighting darkness is to shed light. But how do we in New City shed light against this kind of hate? Jersey City, Pittsburgh, and on social media in Rockland — it’s everywhere. WE CAN START BY SAYING “NO”— to violence against our fellow Jews and to the voice of hate. And we can reach out to our fellow Jews in Rockland. There may be (many) issues we don’t agree on, but we can still stand together. Kol Yisrael areivim zeh bazeh (all Jews are responsible for each other). The Maccabees were steadfast in their belief. It’s time for us to stand as well. Page 6 NHC Bulletin Tevet — Shevat 5780 January 2020

Tzedakah Kari Warren For those of you who are not sure of how Tzedakah works — It is really very simple.... The minimum donation is $5.00 (and the dollar amount is NOT included on the card). Pick a fund — General, Rabbi's Discretionary Fund, Cantor's Discretionary Fund, Building Fund, Shabbos Club, Hebrew School, Prayer Books or Bonnie Lynne Scholarship. You can call, mail or e-mail your donation to the office. This is a great way to help your shul and acknowledge life cycle events in someone's life. Nanuet Hebrew Center will send a card to the person letting them know that you made a donation in their honor or sending them condolences. We also will list your donation in the Bulletin. You may also make a donation to someone that is not a member of the shul. They will also receive a note as well, as long as you supply us with their address. If you have any additional questions, please call or e-mail me @ [email protected] January 2020 Tevet — Shevat 5780 NHC Bulletin Page 9

Goodbye from our Youth Advisor Galit Maayani My name is Galit Maayani. I have been a member of NHC since 2006, when my oldest was in kindergarten and we wanted to send her to a Hebrew School near our home. I have been active within the synagogue for quite some time and have been the youth advisor for about four years now. I am proud to call NHC my home synagogue. I enjoy the people in it and I love our beloved Rabbi Paul Kurland. Our youth USY/Kadima chapter had its ups and downs, but I am proud to say that all of our chapter’s past members have gone on to become great adults and have established great success. I became the youth advisor because I saw the need for kids to have a community that they can call their own, where they can feel that they can be themselves. I wanted to be part of a program that helps teach youth leadership skills. I wanted to help and be part of a program that makes our youth more confident and proud to be Jewish and make Judaism relevant and meaningful to them. Being the youth advisor for four years has allowed me to do just that. I can say that the best reward is knowing that we are helping to shape the future! USY empowers Jewish youth to develop friendships, leadership skills, a sense of belonging to the Jewish People, a deep engagement with and love for Israel, and a commitment to inspired Jewish living through meaningful and fun experiences based on the ideology of Conservative Judaism. It takes a village to raise a great leader and NHC chapter has done and still continues to do just that! I am proud to say that during my time as youth advisor, our chapter has won Chapter of the Year award not only once, but twice! I was so happy that our synagogue was able to host a Shabbaton and Prom and in January 2020 will also be able to host a Divisional Kinnus. It is an honor to be able to bring so many Jewish youth together under our NHC roof for Shabbat and other events. It’s time for me to say goodbye as NHC USY chapter Advisor I’m happy to say I am leaving it in good hands! Over the years our chapter was able to host many events and make meaningful connections. Leading these kids was my pleasure and I enjoyed every moment of it! I can say with great certainty that I could have not done this job without the help of some great NHC members. The members of the youth committee which include: Charyl & Eric Zweigbaum, Maxine & Andrew Toplitsky, Marcy Karsenty, Mitch Spiegel and Jeff Schragenheim. They have been the backbone of the youth group and have provided much support for all the successful programs we had. I wanted to also take this opportunity to thank Kari Warren and Rabbi Paul Kurland; without them, lots of the programming would have not happened. See you around the building! USY/Kadima December Events! We had a great time this month enjoying time as a Chapter as well as some time with all of Rockland USY. On December 7th we had our Movie Night Lounge Night. Our USY board ran some ice breakers. The kids enjoyed pizza and popcorn while watching “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.” December 8th we joined OJC, NCJC, and MJC in a Laser Tag/Cold Stone adventure. Hosted by OJC, we had kids reconnect with other Chapters while battling for Laser Tag Champion! December 15th the USY board led an event for the NHC Hebrew School. The 4th and 5th graders enjoyed decorating donuts (and eating them of course!) Then DREIDEL WARS started! Our 6th and 7th graders competed to make the best sugar cookie 3D dreidels. The kids had to compete to include three letters from the dreidel, use both white and blue icing and make it creative. They had challenges of Channukah Trivia and Nerf Gun Pin Ball to get advantages for their team. In January we will be hosting the EMEK Kinnus from January 24-26th. We are looking for families to host these great USYers while they experience our synagogue for a weekend full of fun and learning. If you are interested in hosting please contact me at [email protected] and I will send all information! February 9th USY and Kadima will be snow tubing at Camp Gaw in Mahwah, NJ. Flyers will be coming out soon. Hope to see you all at our next events! Rachel Benner Youth Advisor Page 12 NHC Bulletin Tevet — Shevat 5780 January 2020

Introducing our new Youth Advisor, Rachel Benner My name is Rachel Benner (Friedlander). I have two little girls, ages 5 and 7. My parents, Judy and Mordechai Friedlander, my sister, Nely and I have been members of Nanuet Hebrew Center since I was three years old. I grew up with NHC. I was a member of Kadima and USY in NHC (at the time Koach), and I was on the USY board as VP Communications from 2004-2006. NHC has always been my home. I went to many encampments, Kinnus, shul- ins and countless other Kadima/USY events. I am still friends with many kids I met in USY who are now located throughout the Country. My identity as an adult comes from my relationship with USY and my relationship with Judaism. In September I was asked to step up as USY Advisor, and I couldn’t believe it. It’s been something that has always been a goal of mine. I know the impact that Kadima/USY can make on Jewish Youth. Since October, Galit has taken me under her wing, she has shown me what is still the same and what has changed with USY through the years. We have a great USY Youth Board; all these kids want our Chapter to grow and be strong. I am excited at the prospect of helping this happen in the next few years I hope to see you all at our upcoming events! Page 14 NHC Bulletin Tevet — Shevat 5780 January 2020

Hazak Here we go again. The end of one year and the start of another. As we used to say, “Been there; Done that”. Now I have to think of some new material to keep you amused, amazed and informed. In addition, it is the start of a new decade. (As opposed to those who don’t think that the new decade doesn’t start until next year.) This means that Hazak will be doing new and exciting things. Now that I am getting older, I wish that I could remember what they are. I guess you will just have to wait for future bulletin articles to find out what we have done. Just a reminder, for January, we will be holding our meeting on the second Thursday of the month, January 9, 2020, because it was decided, at our December meeting, that no one would be in any condition, on January 2nd, to attend the meeting. We are just a bunch of party animals. A sign of the times: Sales clerk to customer – We just need your email address so we can email you all day, every day, for the rest of your life. With you by our side in the New Year, we’ll never back down, never give up, and never stop fighting. This is why we cannot thank you enough for your ongoing support to welcome the stranger, and protect the refugee. With very best wishes, Miriam Feffer Vice President, Development Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you so much for your continued commitment to People to People and the work we do to feed Rockland’s hungry. Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for your recent to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Together, we’re shining a light on extremists and hate groups — making it harder for them to operate in the shadows. You are there — by our side — when we stand in court to win justice for society’s most vulnerable, like immigrants facing discrimination and LGBT students alienated for who they are. And, we’re responding to every request for our award-winning Teaching Tolerance resources — sent free of charge to classrooms across the nation. Rabbi Kurland, your moral and financial support of the SPLC is deeply appreciated. We are truly making a difference in the lives of those we serve. Thank you again. Sincerely, Edward Lord Dear Rabbi Kurland, On behalf of the very special children and families whose lives will be changed by your donation, I would like to extend a personal note of appreciation to you for your kind contribution in response to our mailing. When a child is diagnosed or a family faces a medical trauma, the advice they often hear from friends, family, and colleagues is “Call Chai Lifeline.” In the past three decades, we have earned the trust of the entire community by providing a combination of emotional support, concrete programming, recreation and activities that make it easier to cope with whatever may lay ahead. Sincerely, Rabbi Simcha Scholar Chief Executive Officer Dear Rabbi Kurland: We acknowledge, with deep appreciation, your very generous donation This donation is a true chesed shel emet (act of loving kindness). Your support helps provide funerals and burials for indigent Jews. We ensure that they are buried with peace and dignity, in the traditional Jewish way, sparing them the fate of anonymous mass burials in city cemetery. Thank you for your meaningful support. Very truly yours, Amy Koplow Executive Director Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for your support of Keep Rockland Beautiful’s 2019 Awards Gala. It was a spectacular evening in our elegant new venue on the Hudson. The rooms were filled with the energy and warmth of all the guests there to support KRB and six inspiring honorees, and we were proud to share your support in the beautiful Keepsake Journal provided to everyone at the table! Your generous sponsorship helped us recognize and thank individuals and businesses for their outstanding contributions to making Rockland a cleaner, greener county. It will also flow into KRB’s county-wide environmental education and cleanup programs. Each year, we are proud to engage thousands of individuals in programs that foster volunteer service to the community and stewardship of our environment. We are pleased to share a few moments from the event that were beautifully captured by photographer, George Pejoves. Just go to our Gala Highlights & Sponsors page. Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for your gift to Clal — The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership. We are very grateful for your commitment and support. For more than 45 years, CIal has been defined by the creation, cultivation and dissemination of new ideas always animated by deep pluralism and a fearless embrace of how new realities shape both people’s experience of Jewishness, and the resulting opportunities to apply Jewish wisdom to those new realities within Jewish life and beyond. Your generosity enables us to remain at the forefront of this work which simultaneously sustains and reimagines Jewish life. Rabbis Without Borders (RWB) pushes the borders of what it means to be a rabbi today, preparing rabbis across every denomination to teach Jewish wisdom that serves anyone, anywhere. The 258 remarkably talented rabbis in this network serve existing audiences and are engaging new ones on a constant basis. They are reimagining synagogues across the nation, have launched more than 100 new organizations and ventures, and annually reach some 1.5 million people with a Judaism that transforms people’s lives. Clal’s Innovation work is centered in GLEAN, the world’s first incubator and network for spiritual entrepreneurs. Through our one-of-a-kind partnership with Columbia Business School, Clal is creating a new field of spiritual entrepreneurship, equipping faith-rooted leaders with the training to seize the opportunity in this time of great change in American religion, enabling them to build sustainable ventures that help people and communities flourish. This year we launched our third cohort with 27 participants developing 20 new ventures. The Stand and See Fellowship, our newest initiative, uses a deeply Jewish method to nurture and build a larger American religious leadership, which can more deeply love the Land of Israel, better appreciate the real value and importance of modern Israel, and more fully understand the lives of a wider range of both Israelis and Palestinians than they would otherwise encounter. Stand and See ultimately nurtures fellows’ ability to lead more effectively on any tough issue — to lead with greater nuance and sophistication in the face of the too easy, and often dangerous, polarizations which threaten so many parts of our culture, our nation and our world. Thank you so much. Your support makes Clal’s work possible. Sincerely, Steven J. Rotter, Chairman Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you once again for supporting HFBA’s Parshat Chayei Sara Campaign. For over 20 years, we’ve designated the week where the Torah teaches about Sara’s burial to raise awareness about those in our community who need HFBA to arrange for their funeral and burial. In the year 5779, HFBA arranged for 379 Jews to receive a proper and dignified funeral and burial. That was 43 more than the prior year. We need your support to continue our holy work. We ask that your congregation sponsor a funeral and burial for one indigent Jew. We will set up an online donation platform, exclusively for your congregation, where your members can donate towards this cause. All you will have to do is email the link to your members. For more information, or to sign up, please call Andrew Parver, HFBA’s Director of Operations at 212-239-1662 or email him at [email protected]. Please reaffirm your commitment to performing the ultimate act of kindness, chesed shel ernet, for those who have no one else to care for them. Sincerely, Amy Koplow Executive Director Page 24 NHC Bulletin Tevet — Shevat 5780 January 2020

At this critical time your gift helps us empower pro- Israel students and activists worldwide as they strive to educate their local communities about Israel. Your gift also enables StandWithUs to respond quickly, vigorously, and proactively to the challenges we face today. Since the founding of StandWithUs in 2001, we have developed a myriad of effective programs that are changing the terms of debate on campuses and in communities. To date, StandWithUs has: • Created leadership programs on high school, college campuses and communities that have educated tens of thousands of students and community activists globally each year. We have also recently begun working on a curriculum for Middle School! • Distributed millions of educational materials in a variety of languages, run dozens of leadership conferences annually, and produced thousands of pages of Internet resources utilized every day by student and community leaders, elected officials, journalists, teachers, librarians, and other organizations. We have also produced educational films that have been viewed by millions of people around the world. • Opened a legal department that is now able to provide assistance to students, Faculty and community members who have been bullied by the aggressive boycott propagandists. • Opened an Israel Education Center in the heart of Jerusalem. educating lens of thousands of people of all ages and faiths each year. • Become a leader in social media, reaching millions of people each day and up to 100 million people during peak weeks. Are you a friend on Facebook and Twitter? Once again, thank you for your support and friendship. Without your partnership during these challenging limes, our work would simply be an unfulfilled dream. With sincere appreciation, Roz Rothstein, CEO Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for your generous contribution to The Koby Mandell Foundation. Your support helps us provide programs that encourage those struck by the tragedy of terror and other trauma to cope with their pain and sorrow, and to heal. Our programs use a unique combination of fun, formal and informal therapy, and community building to foster an environment of emotional support. Participants learn to draw strength from each other and create long-lasting bonds of friendship and a community of survivors. As you know, my wife Sherri and I established the Foundation in 2001, shortly after our oldest son Koby, of blessed memory, was murdered by terrorists near our home in Israel. Your gift helps us bring blessing to the world in Koby’s name, and provides us with the necessary resources to help other survivors cope with their pain, heal from their grief, and use the power within tragedy to grow beyond previous limitations. Thank you again for your partnership and generosity. Sincerely Yours, Rabbi Seth Mandell President January 2020 Tevet — Shevat 5780 NHC Bulletin Page 25
