NANUET HEBREW CENTER AFFILIATED WITH THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM 411 S. LITTLE TOR ROAD, NEW CITY, NY 10956 (845) 708-9181 Visit us at: http://www.nanuethc.org E-mail address: [email protected] July-August 2019 Sivan—Tamuz—Av 5779 Volume 48, Number 11 This 500-year old map that depicts the destruction of the Temple as witnessed by Christians is a rare find. The National Library of Israel In commemoration of the Ninth of Av, the day of mourning and fasting marking the destruction of Temple, the National Library of Israel last year presented this ancient map printed in Hartmann Schedel’s large world Chronical. The Chronical, an early modern book, published in 1493 in the German city of Nuremberg was an ambitious undertaking. It contained an overview of world history from the creation of the world until that time. The book boasts a mass of illustrations drawn by the leading artists of the time and was only made possible due to the invention of the printing press. The map illustrated the destruction of Jerusalem and depicts the Temple going up in flames. However, this is not an illustration of Jerusalem during the Second Temple period and a description of the Jews who lived there. It is rather the printing of an engraving depicting Jerusalem’s Christian sites alongside the Temple, typical to the 14th- 15th centuries. It is fascinating though, that the text accompanying the map describes the history of the destructions of Jerusalem – first, the destruction of the First Temple by Nebuchadnezzar, the destruction of the Second Temple by Titus, the Temple vessels being looted, the execution of Shimon bar Giora in Rome, and finally, Jerusalem being turned into AeliaCapitolina, the Roman colony built upon the ruins of the holy city. The author of the text relates that the city was later held for short periods of time by other Western and Crusader kings—but they did not manage to hold it for long against armies of Islam. According to the author, in 1493 the city was under the control of Mohammed’s battalions, which Schedel refers to as “a nation of sin.”

From the President To be honest with you, I had very little interest in writing something for the summer bulletin. My thoughts have been preoccupied with summer, and the ending of another school year. I have also been quite busy preparing for the Congregational Meeting, and spending time with the negotiations of the co-location plan with Temple Beth Shalom. Therefore, I thought I would share a very interesting article about one of my favorite subjects. I hope you enjoy it. Jeff Schragenheim, President Why Are Jews Funny? By Mark Horowitz Dec. 1, 2017 JEWISH COMEDY A Serious History By Jeremy Dauber 364 pp. W.W. Norton & Company. $28.95. Were Jews always funny? For most of their history they had a reputation, at least among their gentile neighbors, for being humorless and glum. But in 1978, Time magazine claimed that 80 percent of all stand-up comedians in the United States were Jewish. So either Jews got funnier, or they were just funny all along and nobody noticed. There are plenty of theories to explain Jewish humor — most devised by Jews. Saul Bellow, channeling his inner Kierkegaard, thought Jewish humor combined “laughter and trembling.” Freud believed Jewish humor was a defense mechanism: a form of sublimated aggression that lets victims of persecution safely cope with their condition. Or as Mel Brooks put it: “If they’re laughing, how can they bludgeon you to death?” In “Jewish Comedy: A Serious History,” the Columbia professor Jeremy Dauber skates through more than 2,000 years of material without ever settling on one overarching theory. Instead, in the manner of a field biologist, he lays out a detailed taxonomy of Jewish humor: seven categories to cover everything from the Book of Esther to “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” with one chapter devoted to each category. There’s a chapter for humor about anti-Semitism; one for satirical humor; one for highbrow wit and wordplay; another for theological or philosophical humor; and a vaguely defined catchall subgenus, the comedy of disguise, that somehow covers all the work of Franz Kafka, Marcel Proust, the Marx Brothers and Jerry Seinfeld. July—August 2019 Sivan—Tamuz—Av 5779 NHC Bulletin Page 5

Instead of a chronological history, Dauber’s systematic approach samples Jewish history from beginning to end in each chapter, with illustrations from the Bible, 18th-century Yiddish drama and Lena Dunham’s “Girls.” Then he rewinds the tape for the next chapter and starts again. Seven times. It makes for frustrating and repetitive reading. “The Bible,” as Dauber eventually confesses, “is not funny,” but that doesn’t stop him. Is the Book of Esther amusing enough to warrant seven different exegeses? Funny you should ask. What starts out as a quirky conceit rapidly devolves into an annoying tic. Because of all the circling back, Dauber tries to keep readers oriented with awkward phrases like “as we’ve mentioned earlier,” “we’ve already spoken about,” “we’ve already encountered Rabbi Gamaliel in an earlier chapter,” or this: “Considering Jews and space leads us back to Woody Allen.” Nonetheless, this narrative straitjacket doesn’t keep Dauber, a serious scholar of Yiddish and Hebrew literature, from making original points along the way. There are thoughtful mini essays on Philip Roth and Kafka, for example. On Kafka, Dauber argues that his subversive comedy is distinctly Jewish because it mocks the pretensions of scientific certainty that papers over the irrational forces controlling our lives. Kafka’s stories convey “the monstrously misunderstood distortions peeking out, in a way so horrible that you just have to laugh.” Dauber’s preferred subject, though, is contemporary Jewish-American film and television comedy. Larry David’s work gets more attention than Kafka or Roth. Unfortunately, most of the commentary on figures like David, Jerry Lewis, Mike Nichols and Judd Apatow is not particularly new or original. He’s better when he sticks to the areas where he holds a scholarly advantage. The fascinating but too-brief sections on 18th- and 19th-century Yiddish drama are startling. Who knew how much German-Jewish comedy was focused on mocking the more pious Jews of Eastern Europe, ridiculing them as foolish, corrupt and sexually perverse country bumpkins. The Jewish minority in Berlin were betting on assimilation and acceptance, trying to distance themselves from their more alien landsmen to the east. Though, in retrospect, who were the bigger fools? This is where the absence of any grand unifying theory feels like a cop-out. Dauber is more comfortable with the triumph of Jewish-American comedy than with the dreary denouement of the European branch. He quotes Freud’s sly observation, “I do not know whether there are many other instances of a people making fun to such a degree of their own character,” but he’s reluctant to dig too deeply into this masochistic strain in Jewish humor. You’ll find more nuance in Ruth Wisse’s book, “No Joke: Making Jewish Humor,” which covers the same ground, but with a greater willingness to probe the ways in which Jewish humor made too much of a virtue out of weakness and passivity. My Friend, Selma Marilyn Brenner The phone rang and a strange woman introduced herself as my new neighbor. She had a request. Would I please invite her daughter, Judy to my daughter, Beth’s fourth birthday party. Thinking, “Hmm..that’s a little bit chutzpdik” but not wanting to upset a new neighbor, I acquiesced. This was the beginning of an almost sixty-year friendship between Selma Stelzer and myself. Over the years that followed, our families participated in a multitude of simchot—six B’nai Mitzvot, six weddings, the birth of grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. So many holidays celebrated together—Erev Kol Nidre dinner with us—break-the-fast with the Stelzers, New Year’s Eve with the Langs (which became New Year’s Day when we couldn’t stay up till midnight). Selma and I had a great deal in common. We were both teachers, we each had three children (her youngest and my oldest became fast friends), we were both committed to Judaism and we both loved to read. How does one portray the essence of a human being in a few short paragraphs? I’ll try. First and foremost, Selma was a mother. She was there for her children, Linda, Matthew and Judy, under the most trying of circumstances. Selma was a teacher par excellance. She bubbled over with excitement over school projects. Years after they left her classroom, students (and their parents) spoke of her with fondness and admiration. Selma was a devoted wife to Irwin. She tolerated years of going on his sailboat even though she was a prime candidate for seasickness. She even tolerated his ornery dog, Clyde. Not too many marriages last sixty-five years nowadays. Selma was the matriarch of her family. The youngest of three children, she was so proud of her brother, Morty, the artist and her sister, Phyllis the concert pianist. (When asked about her talents, she replied, “I bake”). Selma made a tradition of Rosh HaShona dinner by hosting her entire extended family—sister, brother, inlaws, nieces, nephews, grandchildren. Selma was a wonderful hostess and an extraordinary chef. Sometimes, she would go a bit overboard, like the Thanksgiving dinner that had twelve guests and thirteen home-made desserts! Selma and Irwin were members of the Nanuet Hebrew Center for sixty-two years. Over the years, Selma participated in so many functions of the Center—Sisterhood, education committee, fund- raising, Israel affairs, Rabbi’s Monday class, mailing committee, and so many others. In addition to her involvement in shul-related activities, Selma was an active Hadassah member, deeply involved in the Israel Bonds Committee and what was then UJA. The Steltzers visited Israel many times—the last time for their grandson, Sam’s Bar Mitzvah. For all her sterling attributes, the one most meaningful to me is Selma as a friend. She was a friend to me during the best of times, but more importantly, she was there for me during the dark days. Our friendship was such that we began every morning with a phone call—just checking in. I began to worry about her when during our morning call, she could not seem to remember what day of the week it was. Unfortunately, this was the beginning of her decline into Alzheimer’s. Selma’s passing shocked me. I had just spoken to her the previous day and she sounded like Selma. The only consolation I have is that she quietly left this world while having breakfast with her husband. Selma has so many who will miss her—friends and family. Rest in peace, dear friend. Selma Stelzer’s Famous Blintze Casserole Donna Smith On Saturday, June 8th, the Nanuet Hebrew Center honored Selma Stelzer who passed away in March. She was a congregant for 60+ years. At that service, I learned so much about her. Selma was very active in Sisterhood in many different roles. Her final role was reporting on Israeli affairs. She was very knowledgeable and her love of Israel was apparent. One of my memories of Selma is how beautiful and stylish she was. Also, she loved to cook and bake. She submitted several recipes to the NHC Sisterhood cookbook. On the day she was honored, I chose two of her recipes and made them for that kiddush. When I was preparing the recipes, there were a few times that I wished Selma was standing next to me to answer my questions and show me how she did it. These dishes received so many compliments and there were numerous requests for her Blintz Casserole recipe because it was delicious! Thank you Selma! I will be making this again in the future! Hazak It’s summertime and this is a good time to reflect back on what has happened at HAZAK over the past few years. We have had numerous trips, including a trip to the Jewish Museum in Manhattan and several trips to Hyde Park. And of course, there was our trip to Niagara Falls. We had a guest speaker from health services and a comedian, just to mention a few. To improve our health, we did chair exercises. To show off our artistic talents, we painted rocks and tiles. And to improve our brain function, we played a game of Mexican dominoes, which everyone enjoyed. Now is the time to start planning activities for next year. We have had preliminary suggestions for such items as a cruise, a trip to a museum, possibly going to a casino, or just attending a movie, made for grownups. Come join us at our next meeting on Thursday, July 11 at 12:00 to get involved with the planning of these and other events. Although our meeting is normally held the first Thursday of the month, this month the first Thursday is July 4th and it’s my wife’s birthday. Happy Birthday Diane! Our treasurer has informed us that your dues for the next year will be due at this meeting. Again, this year we have been able to maintain our dues at just $18.00. We accept cash, check, credit card, money order, travelers checks, and green stamps (although we accept green stamps, they won’t cover the cost of the dues). Here’s a little goodie I found in the AARP Bulletin that I thought you might like as you plan for vacation: He — How was your vacation? She — So there I was riding my horse with giraffes on both sides and a lion on my heels. He— Oh my! What did you do? She — Hung on for dear life until the merry-go-round stopped. Arthur Fishman, Your happy, friendly, cheerful, smiling, laughing, forgetful bulletin contributor— celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary. With the helpful assistance from my ghost writer and technical advisor. P.S. Breaking News: HAZAK is going to on a trip to West Point on Thursday, August 1. Please let us know by July 15 if you plan on attending as we will be arranging carpools. The cost is approximately $16.00 per person. You must be a member to attend. Tzedakah / ‫צדקה‬ Tzedakah received and recorded by the 10th of the month or the first business day after, will be acknowledged on these pages. If the office is closed because of holidays falling on these days, only donations received before the holiday will appear. Please also note that acknowledgment or lack thereof on these pages does not constitute an official receipt of your donation by the shul. In the event that acknowledgment of your donation does not appear, please let the synagogue office know and we will print it in the next issue of the Bulletin. Planning Ahead Now is the time to start the planning that enhances the work of the congregation by raising the necessary funds so dues need not be raised. Our ongoing fundraisers include the Rabbi's Walk and the Tree of Life. To reserve a brick on the Rabbi’s Walk or reserve a stone or a leaf on the Tree of Life, call Estelle Eisenkraft in care of the office at 845-708-9181.
