Vancouver assistant coach Brad Shaw was a fifth-round pick of Detroit in 1982 and is a former player (1995-99) and head coach (2000-01) of the IHL’s Detroit Vipers. BER-FOUR-ZZI In a wild 7-6 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning to open the 2021-22 season, Red Wings forward Tyler Bertuzzi had an historic night, scoring four goals in his return to the lineup after missing the final 47 games of the 2020-21 campaign due to injury. It marked the seventh time in history a player has had a hat trick in Detroit’s home opener, and remarkably, the fourth time in the last seven seasons. Bertuzzi joins Anthony Mantha (four goals, 2019 vs. Dallas), Mike Green (2016 vs. Ottawa), Justin Abdelkader (2015 vs. Toronto), Brendan Shanahan (1998 vs. St. Louis), Adam Brown (1945 vs. Boston) and John Sorrell (four goals, 1933 vs. NY Americans). Bertuzzi is the ninth player in NHL history to score four-or-more goals in a season-open- ing game, and the first since Toronto’s Auston Matthews in 2016-17. Additionally, the only other instance in league history of a franchise recording four home-opener hat tricks over a seven-year span is the Toronto Arenas/St. Patricks, although three of their hat tricks came in the same game on Dec. 22, 1917 vs. Ottawa. Other highlights from the night included a pair of touted rookies making their NHL debut in forward Lucas Raymond and defenseman Moritz Seider. Raymond earned an assist, and Seider registered two assists to become the first Red Wings skater to have multiple assists in his NHL debut since Slava Kozlov (0-2-2) on March 12, 1992 at St. Louis. 2021-22 INSIDE HOCKEYTOWN • ISSUE ONE | 31
