................................................................................ Wv‡qU `c©Y ............................................................................... Future of Education: tectonic shift in paradigm reality Nayan Moni Borah Lecturer, DIET, Tinsukia A well-educated population, well equipped with relevant knowledge, aptitudes and skills is essential for both economic and social development of a country. Countries with greater capacity to absorb and generate new knowledge and skilled human power are likely to have a comparative edge in attaining and sustaining higher economic growth than those countries that do not. Education in every sense is one of the fundamental factors of development. No country can achieve sustainable economic development without substantial investment in human capital. Education enriches people’s understanding of themselves and the world. The present age is witnessing a paradigm shift in the way teachers are teaching and students are assimilating information. After a year that involved a global pandemic, school closures, nationwide remote instruction, protests for racial justice, and an election, the role of education has never been more critical or more uncertain. For all the reimagining of education in the 21st century, nobody predicted that the greatest disruption of all would come from an unfathomable virus. As education policymakers all over the world grapple with online and distance learning provisions and safe school reopening, they will no doubt also be thinking about what the pandemic means for education in the longer term. The pandemic is expected to have enormous economic consequences and it is also having a major impact on Indian as well as global education. Education has been immensely affected by the on-going digitalisation of everything the COVID-19 pandemic leashed upon the world. With schools closing down and universities moving exclusively into remote learning, teachers and professors, as well as pupils and students, have found themselves working in completely new circumstances. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the largest disruption of education ever. In mid-July, schools were closed in more than 160 countries, affecting over 1 billion students. At least 40 million children worldwide have missed out on education in their critical pre-school years. The Pandemic has jolted the global economy with a pervasive impact on education. Though, the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has presented an opportunity to rethink the deep-rooted classroom mode of education and underscored the significance of online learning. Through the crisis, millions of students across Asia and the Pacific have been learning and studying using new collaborative digital tools and resources on a massive scale. They have been physically apart, but virtually together. With data-based technologies, educators will also be able to create flexible learning spaces and continuous on-learning environments, which will spread across the home, schools, and communities.Children who start school from now on will grow up to be workers and leaders in a digital-first world that will demand new skills and new ways of thinking. The virtual system of teaching and learning lets students share ideas; and Flip grid, which lets teachers and students create short videos to share. Students do individual work, group work, and confer with teachers when needed. The e-learning overcomes geographical barriers and ensures equitable access to education. It also facilitates convenient, quick, on -the- go and 24×7 access. Numerous ed-tech firms have leveraged this opportunity to offer lessons in an interesting and interactive way to students. Thus, it can be said that the world has seen a major transformation in the way it views education. The digitised space for educational transaction has become a new normal thereby paving the way for a more techno-centric and diversified future of education.ØØ 57
................................................................................ Wv‡qU `c©Y ............................................................................... Peace Education-An issue of concern and a premise for learning Lipika Dutta Lecturer, DIET, Tinsukia “If we are to reach real peace in this world, we shall have to begin with children” - Mahatma Gandhi Education plays a significant role in unifying nations and the human spirit. In this digital era, violence and strife are emerging in an unprecedented manner in human society. We are increasingly drifting towards a more westernized education leaving aside our rich traditional values and ethics. In the new millennium, inculcating life values and peace education has become a prime concern for human survival. A culture of peace and nonviolence is a result of an effective educational system. According to Webster, peace is “ a state of quiet or tranquility, freedom from disturbance or agitation, calm repose”. Peace simply connotes a calm state of mind. Peace of the mind, peace in the family, society, nations and general presence of peace in the world is a desired virtue. Education which teaches people the human values like tolerance, non-violence, humanity, and respect for each other’s opinion and creates a society free from war, fear, exploitation, violence, injustice can be considered as “Peace Education.” Peace education helps in developing a healthy self image, promoting social growth, harmony and preventing the occurrence of conflict. To establish the culture of peace, inculcation of human values, fostering positive attitude, maintaining unity in diversity, promoting positive human relations, spreading awareness etc. are needed in every sphere of human being. The three most important strategies for achieving peace are peacekeeping, peacemaking and peace building. In the era of science and technology, although the latest developments have made remarkable advancements, bringing the world closer to us, yet we are still to get closer in our hearts. Change today is much appreciated. However, real change must happen within us to transform our mindset to play a constructive role and thus become a harbinger of a successful society. For this peace education and its practice should become an integral part of different curricular subjects and must also be an intrinsic element in all co-curricular activities, starting from the primary to the higher level. “Education” and “Teacher” are the best vehicles for achieving this. Moreover, the role of parents and all the responsible members of the society in fostering peace are immense and crucialØØ 58
................................................................................ Wv‡qU `c©Y ............................................................................... Implementation of Physical Education and Sports in the School Curriculum Kiriti Kamal Bora Lecturer, DIET, Morigaon The number of non-educational activities that children do in India has increased over the last few years. With rising incomes, the proliferation of places selling junk food, and the easy availability of non-academic activities, children are spending less time keeping themselves healthy. Adding to this the proliferation of mobiles, TV, and computers and you know why children are no longer keen on health. Khelo India: National Programme for Development of Sports, branded as Khelo India, aims at improving India’s sports culture at the grass-root level through organized talent identification, structured sporting competitions and infrastructure development. It is a Government of India programme launched in 2017-18 under the tenure Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister’s Vijay Goel and Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and under this scheme a well-structured programme, Khelo India Fitness has been made compulsory in the CBSE Schools with a view to curb the menace of obesity in the school going students. But the question is our school going kids able to reap the benefits of such or similar programmes. As per New Education Policy (NEP), Government of India all the states are to introduce Physical Education as a compulsory subject in the school curriculum. The aims and objectives of compulsory PE are to groom the students as fit and healthy citizens of our country, so that, they can contribute for the development of a strong and prosperous India. On the other hand, mass participation of the students in Physical Education and Sports activities will provide better opportunities to the students to showcase their sporting talents. As the saying goes “Catch them young and train them right”, Physical education teachers are well equipped in identifying and nurturing hidden sporting talents at a very young age. Since physical education is an integral part of total education, the education department shall have to initiate appropriate steps to implement compulsory physical education in the schools of Assam. As a regular subject, Physical education is an important part in the schools under CBSE, KVS, NVS etc. Many states and UT’s like Haryana, Delhi, UP, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharastra, Manipur, M.P. Tripura, West Bengal, Gujrat, Punjab etc. have long back introduced physical education in the school curriculum. It is of utmost necessity to introduce physical education as subject in school curriculum in Assam for quality education ensuring all round physical and mental development of student and to build a better society and a stronger Assam. Interestingly, there are many universities and colleges in Assam imparting Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Diploma, Mphil., Ph.D. degree in physical education and sports and there is numerous highly educated unemployed physical educationist in Assam depriving of an opportunity to utilize their skills and knowledge in an appropriate way. Implementing physical education in the school curriculum will not only create job avenues but also boost the morale of the numerous unemployed physical educationists in contributing to the dream of the Government of Assam in making Guwahati as the Sports Capital. Petting and Happy Hormones Pompy Talukdar Lecturer, DIET, Darrang Since my childhood, I have been closely connected with different pets. And among all of them, dogs have been my constant companion through thick and thin. Dogs can heal your lonely heart when looking for a compeer to share with. Research have proved that petting dogs makes your heart healthy. It has been found that having a dog can help improve cardiovascular outcomes, especially for heart attack and stroke survivors living alone. Dogs never forsake their owners even if the stakes are high on the other side. Man is always longing for love, affection and companionship. Now a days when everybody wants to speak and not lend a ear to listen to or a shoulder to cry upon, your furry companion can speak with twinkling eyes and intermittent cooing asking for a warm hug. Yes! you read it right. The most common sounds of pleasure are moans and sighs, although dogs also use whines and growls to communicate happiness. Low-pitched moans are very common in puppies and are signs of contentment. Dogs are delighted when you rub them under their belly or around their lower neck. This is the way you can calm the dog down, when they are hyperactive or playful. Oxytocin has long been referred to as “the love hormone” and the “cuddle hormone,” because we (and our pets) release it when 63
