 Janani Madubashini Rajakaruna Assessment Officer, Northern Territory Government, Australia Having been brought up in a background that values the environment, I’ve always had a curiosity about what happens around us from a scientific perspective. Once I started studying at the University of Ruhuna, these questions found their answers little by little. It’s where I was selected as a Botany special student, and my thirst for knowledge on scientific phenomena around the ‘environment’ intensified. Department of Botany is where I found the scientist within myself. It was a pool of knowledge and experiences that I gainedlaid the foundation for who I am today. I’ve always had the proper guidance from lecturers. Besides academics, it was a place which reinforced my other soft skills. These collectively led me to graduate with three Gold Medals being the batch top. The skills I gained as a Botany specialized graduate helped me pursue a career as an Ecologist/ Environmental Consultant in a multinational company in Australia. I needed to explore more in the field of Environmental Science which ended up me successfully completing a master’s degree in environmental management from Charles Darwin University. With all these experiences and qualifications, I now work for Australia’s Northern Territory Government Department of Environment as a Vegetation Assessment Officer. So far, I’ve gained so many opportunities such as working with renowned ecologists, exploring natural environments across Australia, and providing environmental advisory solutions for various development projects. Furthermore, I now am a member of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand. The best piece of advice I have for undergraduates is that the University of Ruhuna is a knowledge treasure; you’ve got the best group of lecturers, the best library, valuable research facilities, invaluable learning materials, and last but not least, stunning surroundings. Get the best out of her. Plenty of opportunities are waiting to welcome you out here. Go for it! 49 | P a g e
