JUNIOR SENATE NEWSLETTER VOLUME 2 AUGUST, 2020

UN is an intergovernmental organization that aims to maintain international peace and security. It celebrates special days, week, month, year or decade for a special cause, issue, or awareness. 1. 22nd March – World Water Day - This day is observed to highlight importance of Fresh Water. 2. 11th July – World Population Day – This day is observed to bring in awareness about Population Issues. 19th August – World Humanitarian Day – This is an International Day dedicated to recognizing Humanitarian personnel who are working for the betterment of the society selflessly. Celebration of World Humanitarian Day considering Covid – 19: - Covid 19 has been the best example where frontline officers like doctors, nurses, community workers etc. worked for us selflessly, Placing others before them. The virus which spread by contact and resulted in lockdown created a threat for mankind. But doctors, nurses and community workers had to serve everyone around without thinking how the virus would affect them or what would happen if it affected them. When I looked around my neighborhood, I realized how we all stood for each other. Senior citizens in our complex who did not have anyone to help them were taken care by neighbors who helped by bringing vegetables, grocery, medicine, and other things which required them to go out of their houses. Security guards and housekeeping staff were helped by all society members in their own way by offering daily essentials, grocery, tea and snacks.

Maids around our society were offered help apart from salaries like grocery and essentials by collectively contributing money by society members. I realized that we all could do our bit to help ourselves and others. World humanitarian day will not be celebrated for just one day this year. It has, in my mind, been celebrated every single day of this lockdown, and will continue till we have compassion, sympathy, empathy, unity, respect, love and care for ourselves and others. Let us ponder now: 1) What does Humanitiy mean? 2) How would life be different if Doctors, Nurses, Community Workers, Soldiers were not there? 3) What do you think can we do in the future to support the community post lockdown?

APPLE OF OUR EYE – ACHEIVER Ms. Yashita Uchil, Grade 5 Author How did you get interested in writing books? When I was a year old, my parents made me do reading and writing activities, one of which was my parents buying me picture flashcards. It helped build my vocabulary and learn new words. Then, my parents noticed my interest in reading. They got more books for me to read, and that is how I developed my interest in reading. 2. How did you get the inspiration for writing your book? When I was 8 years old, my father gifted me the first book in the Harry Potter series, which was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I was absolutely hooked onto that book, so, I read the whole series. I thought that I could also start writing a book. I got a stroke of inspiration after reading Harry Potter. 3. Do you think your second book will be better than your first one? If so how and if not, do tell. My 1st book will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the 1st book of mine that got published. It is available on Amazon. However, but I think my 2nd book will be much more interesting and exciting. I hope you will all like reading it when it is published. 4. Would you want to become a writer when you grow up? Yes, definitely! Since I have read the Harry Potter series, I have always dreamt of becoming a writer when I grow up. I would like to make books that are so interesting; all the children around the world should love it.

5. Which two books would you definitely want other kids to read? For children who are really into reading, and have developed a passion for it, I would suggest the Harry Potter series, one of my favourites for children who love fiction and fantasy, The Tom Gates series for kids who love humour, and for readers who have just discovered the habit, I would recommend the Ruskin Bond books that are short and sweet, and also the Seven Habits of Happy Kids. 6. What is the secret of your success in so many Olympiads? I do not have any secret to success. Every year I participate in General Knowledge, Math and English Olympiads. In Math and General Knowledge, I just practice a bit. My father helps me for the general knowledge Olympiad. He drew all the countries’ flags’ and wrote their capitals and all, to help me learn more about them. 7. Who do you think supported you the most when you wanted to write the book? I would like to give a big thanks to my parents and my family. They always motivated and encouraged me and my little sister Sanvika. She was always up to hear my ideas when I was structuring my story. My grandparents were also supportive. I would like to thank all my teachers of Euro School, especially Nikisha ma’am and Smriti ma’am, who also motivated and encouraged me. When I first began writing my book, after a stroke of inspiration, Emily and Mia in Nitsoland were created. I used to go to school and write the book. I used to take my diary and write the story. In the 10 minutes break we got between lessons, I took out my diary and started writing bit by bit. So, my friends started reading those bits and complimented me. Hence, I would also like to give a big thanks to my friends. 8. Have you decided about writing your second book? What will it be about? I have already begun writing my 2nd book. It is about 2 girls whose dreams are to become authors, and the challenges they face during their journey, which are only increased by the fact that the subject of English Literature is illegal in their country.

Greetings Eurolings! NEWS & VIEWS How well do you think you know earthlings from Euro School? How well do you know the very hand that rules the world by rocking our cradle? Well, here is an opportunity for you to get to know them like never before. In this issue of Cloud9, spilling the beans is Prashant Naik Sir, Senior Administrative Manager of Euro School, Airoli. He is an inspiration to all of us for his display of team spirit sheathed in a scabbard of politeness. So, relax and read the interview below along with a cup of healthy corns. Q1. Sir, we think you are ‘Dashakarma’, i.e. you manage book distribution, bus routes, uniform distribution, maintaining working condition of educomp, and so on and so forth. How do you do it so seamlessly? A. It depends on you how you take the task assigned to you. I can be the support system of the school because I have a team behind me. Thank God! My team members comprising of Vinod Sir, Vinod-P Sir, Alpesh Sir, Dinesh Sir, Vicky Sir and Aatish Sir are always ready to work for me under any circumstances. Q2. Sir, which is the task that you enjoy the most? I enjoy all my tasks but if I have to call out one task, it will be School Uniform distribution as it is an ever growing and challenging task. Q3. Sir, we find you to be the biggest example of teamwork. But personally, do you prefer working on your own and finishing things faster, or do you prefer working with a team? A. One person cannot change the world! You need support from your team members and I always believe in my team. Whenever the school gives us a task, we discuss it amongst ourselves. The benefit of such a team meeting is that many ideas / ways suggested by the team members helps us to execute the task.

Q4. Tell us one thing that you think is good that happened during this pandemic? A. People are learning to survive. Maximum work can be done from home, including Radio Station work, online trading etc. Exodus from metropolitan cities is leading us back to farming, which is the very economy of India. Moreover, people are learning to take care of themselves. Q5. How do you manage to remember most of the children’s names or face, and also map it to their parents during dispersal? A. As I am involved in Book distribution, Uniform distribution, Transport as well as managing many other events happening at school, it helps me identify the students with their parents. Q6. How do you adapt to new challenges with perseverance every time? A Our Key Responsibility Area (KRA) is fixed by the School HR team. Our Standard Operating Processes (SOPs) are fixed. I must adjust my challenges within the same. Still, if I face a challenge, of which I don’t have any idea, I take the help of our Director Principal, Ms. Sudeshna Chatterjee, and our core team members within the school. Q7. Are you missing us? Do you want us back any sooner or do you enjoy the solitude of mind just a little longer? Not only me, but Sudeshna Mam too, are missing the children a lot. Every day we come to school at our regular school timing and every day we play the school anthem exactly at the same time at school. You must be aware that Sudeshna Mam is randomly visiting your virtual classes to see how students are coping up with their virtual classes. Many Thanks to you Sir, for your valuable insights. The readers of Cloud9 will be intrigued!

FINESSE WITH FINGERS – AUGUST FESTIVALS One of the most famous and widely celebrated festivals across India, Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan, epitomizes the bond between a brother and sister. It is celebrated on the full moon night or Poornima of the Shravan month. Girls and women across the country prepare the Rakhi, or a decorative thread, and tie it on the wrist of their brothers, who in turn promise to protect their sisters. In a normal scenario, we go out and purchase one, but in the current situation, it is difficult. So, I took some help from my mom, as she was having silk threads of different colours, which she uses for thread work, to make jewelry. This is amazingly simple and easy to make. First, make the center flower design, by taking 20-25 rounds of thread in any square material ( I took a match box) and then take it out, tie a knot in the center, and cut the edges. To this, we can stick any decorative material using glue and thread to tie. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated for a whole 11 days. It begins on the Chaturthi, when people install the statue of Lord Ganesha in their homes and temples. This festival ends on Anant Chaturdashi with Ganesh Visarjan. The devotees of the Lord Ganesha offer their prayers to God. People sing devotional songs for him and recite various mantras in his praise. They also perform Aartis in favour of the lord and seek his blessings on them. Bakrid is a 'Feast of Sacrifice' and is the most important feast in the Muslim calendar. It was celebrated on 1st August this year. It is called Id-ul-Adha in Arabic, and Bakr-Id in the Indian subcontinent. It is the second of the two Eids celebrated by Muslims with traditional fervour and gaiety in India and across the world.

Friendship Day is an annual event observed worldwide for celebrating the bond of friendship amongst individuals. Friendship Day is a day when friends profess their love for each other. Friends acknowledge the importance and presence of one another in their lives. Friends exchange gifts, greeting cards, and spend time together, to make the day memorable and special. This one I am preparing for the second time. The first one I had made to wish my mom on her birthday. It was on 1st June, and the lock down was there, and I didn’t arrange anything to wish her. I was incredibly sad and then father gave this idea of making a card for her. I made this out of colour paper from last year’s Scrap book along with white paper, which were the things available. To make this, you can take a white paper, fold it into a folder shape, and make a cut of 4mm on both the sides at equal distance. Reverse the same and repeat it 2 more times and the cuts needs to be 3 mm and 2 mm. Then do the writing using Colour pencil / Sketch Pens. And to my surprise, she was very happy when I gave her this.

MOVING AHEAD Robots to the Rescue. AI -The new way forward? AI (Artificial Intelligence) has long been a favourite subject in the realm of Hollywood fiction depicting worlds populated by AI robots. With the corona virus pandemic engulfing the whole world and the increasing need for social distancing, this fiction has now become a reality. Humanoid Robots have been mitigating the risk of Corona Virus infection at various Hospitals round the world, by performing contactless monitoring of Covid Patients and even disinfection of Covid Wards. But the role that Artificial Intelligence plays is not limited only to Healthcare. A Robot Restaurant which recently opened in Bengaluru, made headlines as the first robot-based restaurant in the city. Some of the leading five-star hotels chains in India are planning to deploy humanoid robots to interact with customers help in check-in, and serve food at restaurants. Many of us are already accustomed to talking on our phones. “Ok Google, Tell me a Joke” or “Alexa, will it rain today?”. Both are examples of AI powered virtual assistants on our smart phones or devices. Artificial Intelligence has also found its place in the education sector. Virtual reality makes learning fun, as students learn about things, places, and objects and so on, from the comfort of their classrooms, without spending money or time traveling. The line between fact and fiction is now blurring. The day when we all will be able to drive around in ‘Self Driven’ cars is not too far off. AI will change the way we live our lives.

WHAT IF SCIENCE What If I Could Jump On to ‘The NEOWISE’ Comet! Comet NEOWISE, called the Icy Wanderer, delighted sky watchers around the northern hemisphere last month. On Thursday, July 23rd it came closest to Earth, when it was 103 million kilometers away, travelling at a speed of 90 km/sec. What are comets? Comets are small cosmic snowballs of frozen gases, rocks and dust that orbit around the Sun. Scientists also call a comet “A deep fried ice cream”! Won’t it be fascinating to jump onto the comet and travel far into our Solar System? I will make myself a glistening palace in one of the icy caves; I will be floating on its surface as it has weak gravity; the days will be only a few hours long; the sun will rise from the west, and water will boil at 66 degrees! There are about 13 million Olympic swimming pools of water in Comet NEOWISE, so I’m definitely carrying my ice skates to the comet to slip and slide on the frozen lakes. But that’s not the only thing that makes this frozen rock special…., it is a little more unique and weirder. Do you know, that NEOWISE comet takes 700 years to orbit the sun, which means I will be celebrating my birthday once in that many years! Now, it will not return to our skies for 6800 years, so that also means that the next time I get to see my family, will be after thousands of years, and I guess I’m not ready for that! For now, I am happy I just saw it with my binoculars and waved it goodbye!

During the last December holidays, we X-PLORED visited the Padmanabhapuram Palace in Tamil Nadu. We travelled by car. My father finally returned after half an hour. We Padmanabhapuram Palace is a Travancore entered the palace gates, which led to a huge yard era palace located in Padmanabhapuram, with a big tree in the Centre. We bought our tickets Kanyakumari District, and Tamil Nadu. It is and headed to Palace entrance. Now, when I say also known as Kalkulam Palace. The Palace palace, do not think of those big huge marble or is owned, controlled and maintained by red stone palaces here. This Palace is made purely Government of Kerala Archaeology out of wood; you can imagine a big wide wooden Department. There was no parking place house. At the entrance, there were guards who anywhere near the palace, so while my wore magnificent red turbans and held spears in father went to park his car, my mother and I their hands, just like they did in the past. We were went to buy some souvenirs. asked to remove our shoes and leave them at the counter before entering the palace. We did that and entered the palace. It had intricate and precise carvings all over the walls and ceiling. From the porch ceiling, there hung a brass oil lamp on a chain. It had a beautiful horse with a rider carved on one side. The guide at the palace who knew four languages such as English, Hindi, Malayalam & Tamil, told us that in whatever direction we turn the lamp; it wouldn’t twist itself back into its original position like most lamps would. The guide told us that the palace was constructed around 1601 CE by Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal, who ruled Venad between 1592 and 1609.

The founder of modern Travancore, While we moved on, I looked through some of the doors and King Anizham Thirunal Marthanda saw a bed and something that resembled a swing. The guide Varma (1706–1758) who ruled saw us looking at it and told us that the bed was made of Travancore from 1729 to 1758, 50+ medicinal woods and herbs, and it was where the king rebuilt the palace in around 1750. slept. As I had assumed, the guide told us that this was the King Marthaanda Varma dedicated swing where the King and Queen discussed their family the kingdom to his family deity, affairs. Then the guide took us through a narrow Sree Padmanabha, a form of Lord passageway with many locked doors. The guide told us that Vishnu, and ruled the kingdom as this is where the king held all the state dinners. The Palace Padmanabha Dasa or servant of the had its own huge temple of Lord Padmanabha with several Lord Padmanabha. Hence, the name pillars with beautiful maiden statues carved on them, and Padmanabhapuram or City of Lord equally beautifully designed walls & ceilings. We later Padmanabha. came into a huge room with frames of all rulers of Varma Dynasty. So royal! The entire walk through this magnificent Then the guide showed us the king’s building of Kerala style architecture can be considered throne. It was just like our modern- royal when you visit Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. I had a day chairs, but little broader with a great experience, and I am sure you would too. red cushion. The special thing about the throne was its beautiful, precise carvings. I would be truly impressed if a modern day artist could replicate it. Then we went up a flight of stairs. We came into a room filled with stone statues of Devis and Devtas. They were as beautiful as any other carving in the palace.
