EDITORIAL’S DESK FOREWORD ‘Success is ninety-nine percent perspiration and one percent inspiration’ is a popular adage. These six- months were a roller-coaster ride. The darkest night is a testimony that the light is not far away. Indeed! Today, we are seeing that silver lining. The satisfaction of an educator lies in our students and their prospects and progress. The triumph of watching our students overcome their obstacles and see their eyes light in understanding, is where, lies our real rewards. The mission will continue of shaping destinies and sculpting souls; above all, in knowing that as much as we give, we will receive, measure for measure. We are grateful to our parents for their constant cooperation and support. Due to which, we have been able to uphold the quality of teaching and the eagerness to learn among our children during these testing times. Last but not the least, we pray to Almighty to keep our souls strong in purpose, unfailing in faith and robust in hope. With Warm Regards, 3 EuroSchool, Undri

From the Principal's desk ‘THE VOICE OF THE FUTURE’- HALF-YEARLY NEWSLETTER Dear Parents, “Discovering who you are today is the first step to being who you will be tomorrow”- Destiny’s Odyssey True to this quote, our endeavour at EuroSchool Undri has been to create an environment for our young learners to discover their innate potential through concrete, factual educational experiences that foster individual thinking and promote holistic development. We have set standards and goals for ourselves and our students and strive to achieve them- in the sphere of academics, sport, the performing arts, leadership and many more. Our vision has always been to encourage our students to chase their dreams and accomplish what can sometimes seem unattainable. There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other. Our young learners have been driven, determined and dedicated and this has been well reflected in our first board results where our students shone like stars with their stellar performances. 4

I am pleased to put on record that in these eight years, EuroSchool, Undri stands tall with about 2000 students and 117 staff. The quality of education provided is par excellence. This year has shown how innovative and adaptable our minds can be, when faced with unforeseen circumstances. The dark cloud of the pandemic did not deter us from looking for rainbows of hope and innovation. In fact, we as humans, have evolved for better prospect. The overnight transition from physical schooling to the virtual medium did unnerve us momentarily but we picked up the reins and emerged stronger than ever before. We were among the first few schools to set the ball rolling for the online classes for our senior grades. We ensured that our students not only completed their portion well within time but also appeared for their subjective examinations effortlessly and with much success. Education both globally and locally has witnessed a transformation. We are at the precipice of this revolution and a paradigm shift is imminent. Students are no longer enamoured by archaic teaching methodologies. Argus –The Seamless Digital Learning Ecosystem, has engaged our students in interesting educative and interactive video courses, digital quizzes, enrichment worksheets and online assessments to enhance and evaluate the conceptual and application knowledge of our Eurokiens . 5

The last six months have been filled with new academic milestones and learning. Our team curated activities, events and competitions to beautifully fit into the virtual schooling mould. Our students and teachers showed exemplary critical thinking, collaboration and creativity to make each virtual celebration momentous and meaningful. Student participation was at its peak and learning objectives were maximised . This newsletter is a culmination of all our dreams and aspirations which we have translated into a digital booklet for your enjoyment. It has been an absolute delight in putting together this labour of love and I am certain that you will cherish the special memories our children have made with us. Dear parents, I would once again like to applaud and acknowledge the contribution of each one of you in scripting our success story. Last but not the Least, I express my gratitude to the Almighty, for giving me the strength to execute my duties diligently and to the best of my ability. May his blessings always be upon each one of us! With Warm Regards, Seema Bahukhandi Principal EuroSchool, Undri. 6

Importance of Moral Values \"If there's righteousness within the heart, there'll be beauty in character, if there's beauty in character, there'll be harmony reception , when there's harmony at home, there'll be order within the nation, when there's order within the nation there'll be peace within the world\". ( Dr APJ Abdul Kalam) Moral values are the code we live by in a civil and Ms Preeti Khanna just society. Our values and morals are a Vice Principal reflection of our character. They are what we use to guide our interactions with our friends, family and others. Moral values allow us to inculcate humanism, a deep concern for the well being of others and the nation. This can be accomplished only when we instill a deep feeling of commitment to values that would build this country and bring back to the people pride in work that brings order, security and assured progress. According to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi- \"If wealth is lost nothing is lost\" \"If health is lost something is lost\" \"If character is lost everything is lost“ Best of all things is character. Moral values are the essential building blocks of our character and nature and therefore the sum of our character and our nature is what we all are as citizenry . They are the very basis of distinction between an individual's being and other creatures, and also it's lifted our species above its origin. Moral values give us a sense of enabling to choose between what is right and what is wrong. A man without moral values is kind of a lost ball within the high weeds. These values save us from committing grave errors knowingly as it g7 ives us a guilty conscience when something wrong has been deliberately done.

Morals are beliefs that we all live by. They are instilled in us by our parents, teachers, friends, and ourselves Moral values help define the way the world looks at us. Our morals affect our actions and reactions. Morals and ethics also affect society When making the choice between right and wrong we often judge others more strongly on their morals; than do we for ourselves . If we've been blessed with a conscience that shakes us up every once during a short time , then we all know when we have discarded our morals and turned our back on the \"high ground.\" Perhaps, we have succumbed to group think or peer pressure. It is sometimes hard to be the only one to take a stand against a group of peers going in the wrong direction. Even when we know right from wrong. It takes some critical thinking about morals when they are tested in time. When moral issues arrive in our life, do we waiver if we know that no one is looking? Hopefully, we turn away from the brief temptation because we are uncomfortable, and live with the knowledge of what is right. Moral values give a purpose to your life. When we live our life according to moral values that are based on honesty, compassion, courage, modesty, and forgiveness, then we can also form positive bonds with other people. Incorporating the moral value of honesty in our life makes us trustworthy. We will have a clear conscience because we can respect our self. The people that one comes into contact with will be able to count on us to be fair and sincere. Our integrity will allow us to advance in both our personal and professional life. There are more opportunities for us to fully experience life when we are honest. One also needs to incorporate the moral value of compassion into one’s life. Compassion allows one to have sympathy for the misfortunes of other people. It also motivates us to want to give them any type of assistance that we can. Compassion results in our having feelings of mercy towards other people. When we have compassion as a moral value people are more likely to put their trust in us because we will be non8 - judgmental of their circumstances

In life it is essential to have modesty which is very essential especially in respect to courage. Modesty allows one to realize what one’s limits are. It helps us to stay focused and keeps us from becoming overconfident and reckless. People will feel comfortable around us because we are humble and we don’t try to belittle them. Lastly, it is also important to incorporate the moral value of forgiveness in our life. Forgiveness allows us to move past hurtful or damaging situations. It allows us to abandon feelings of anger or resentment against others or ourself. One can be emotionally healthy when one practices forgiveness because it keeps us from holding onto pain and resentment. Modesty keeps us focused and humble. Forgiveness allows us to be emotionally stable because we don’t hold onto anger and resentment. These attributes will allow one to live one’s life in a way that reduces stress levels allowing space for peace and harmony in life. Moral values allow to live life in a manner that one can be proud of. The bonds that one forms with others will also be more fulfilling because one lives life according to honesty, compassion, courage, modesty and forgiveness. Moral values are extremely important for your overall well-being.as they provide a structure for your life. Honesty makes you respectable. Compassion makes you sympathetic to others. Courage in character allows you to overcome life’s challenges Ms Preeti Khanna Vice Prin9cipal EuroSchool Undri

25th May,2020 Monday 10:30am Dear Diary, Can you believe that it has been approximately five months since I have stepped out of my house! You might be wondering why I haven’t felt the urge to do so yet. What can I say, it’s been like living the movie “Contagion”. A few months ago, a virus named COVID-19 started affecting a large number of people in China. At that point of time, we all felt safe and secure because the virus was foreign and we were oceans away. Alas! This was not the case. Just like a broken pipe, the virus started trickling all over the world. Like a stealthy thief, the virus sneaked into our houses and robbed us of our health. Soon the governments of different countries were forced to cease all activities. Schools, shops, markets, offices and other travel centres came to a standstill. Roads were completely deserted. By then we had to wear masks wherever we went, even while visiting our neighbours! After returning home, we had to wash every inch of our hands and legs as a necessary precaution. It was as though the plague had taken over again! Birthdays were not celebrated with the usual fervour. Our school conducted online classes through an app called Zoom. Last week, the school announced the cancellation of our tests and the beginning of our holidays. I was pretty excited in the beginning, but soon I started to miss my friends and longed for school which was not something I hoped for everyday. During the lockdown period, we saw significant changes in our surroundings. Pollution no longer blocked out the stars, and they shone brightly like diamonds in the night sky. Animals had come out of hiding and they resumed their place in nature. It made me realise that in our day-to –day lives we often miss out these wonders of nature. One of the advantages of the lockdown was that I could spend more time with my family and appreciate the wonderful life I have been given. Also, I’m pretty sure that I will emerge fitter than I was before. My brother and I exercised daily in the evening. I won’t be surprised if I have bulging muscles when school resumes, which is an exaggeration of course. This period has taught me that whatever challenges life throws at us, we must utilize our time in the most efficient manner so that we don’t regret it later. “Regret must not be our constant companion”, quoting the lines of Professor Dumbledore from Harry Potter, one of my favourite books. That’s all I had to write for today, and I will write again soon. Meliss2a5 Joel Grade 10A

Tuesday 26th May 2020 Time : 9p.m Dear Diary, Quarantine day 62 Since this lockdown, I don’t know who to talk to I feel lonely but not with my dear diary. You are the only source, I can actually write my thoughts and feelings and reach out to other than my friends and family, of course. I always wished that life could be different and here I am but It didn’t end of up well I wanted anything but this. Every day I dreamt of no school and only holidays but it took me to a different path for the first time in my life I am actually missing school which I never thought was possible until today I thought that I got whatever I wanted but not like this . I wanted school and studies to be out of my life at any cost but not at the cost of people dying! Definitely not. I am furious and sad and this is driving me crazy. Never have I ever felt this alone in my entire life. I know my family is here to support me, but this is getting out of hand, I miss my normal life I miss my friends, I miss my Sunday outings and the restaurant food, and I can’t believe I’m saying this but I miss school. I’d really wish everything could go back to normal I so miss my life back then. oh! I have got to eat dinner, so bye for now! Quarantine day 63 Here I am again. Since no one to talk to, I guess I am going to fill you . Remember how we all danced and rejoiced on 31st December welcoming 2020 this year, I am going to celebrate the going of it. There are so many problems due to this corona global crisis. name it and you have it . People are going into depression but what is greater destruction than depression, death. Even after corona goes away depression will not. The economy has gone low and so many other issues will start after corona it won’t be easy for the world to cope up even after it ends and that’s the saddening truth. I don’t want to rant or anything but it’s the fact that we have to believe, we as human beings did mot not save the earth so god is punishing us for it. Ok enough about this earthly speech. let us now talk about my current “quarantine” life …today was just my usual day like the quarantine usual day. Besides helping my mother clean up the whole house and watching television I decluttered and decorated my closet I made amazing food this quarantine it has been a trend for a while so had to try it. and learnt so much and experienced new things sitting at home. Life could be possible so my only message is that move on with whatever you have and not just sit back cribbing about waiting for things to take place on their own because things are even possible if you don’t think about the impossible life is just the way it is so live every second while it lasts and be grateful for what god has not taken from us. Because you may not know that tomorrow will ever come . Aiman Kac2h6 wala Grade 9A

Date: 29th May,2020 DEAR DIARY.... Today it has been little over two months for the lockdown to be declared.... A few weeks ago, we lived a happy and carefree life. On week days we went to school, met our friends, teachers and enjoyed campus life. After school we met up with friends, ran errands and enjoyed hanging around our neighbourhood. On weekends we went to malls, movies, parks, birthday parties and did so many fun things with our friends and family. Visited our grandparents, went for picnics and had a lot of merriment. Then suddenly, a few weeks ago, life as we knew, it just changed. What is most surprising is that, what changed it is a tiny, wee, invisible virus called Corona or COVID -19. It started with China and soon spread all across the globe, causing a Pandemic. Along with it the virus has brought along a new way of life – One in which there are no more handshakes, no hugs, no kisses from our loved ones, no more malls, movies picnics or dinners and lunches or visiting family and friends. No more going to school, for school has gone virtual and is coming home to us. In fact, no going out at all! For the only way to rid our lives of this curse called Corona virus is to socially distance ourselves from others. So, it is time for quarantine, lockdown and social distancing. Markets and businesses have shut down, the streets are deserted and eerily quiet, no traffic, no pedestrians or hawkers. Cities have turned into ghost towns. There is fear and anxiety all around. Fear of contracting the virus or losing a loved one. Anxiety over losing a job or home. These are difficult and uncertain times. Amid all the chaos and hardship caused by the large-scale outbreak of this virus there have been some positive outcomes as well. Without the hoards of vehicles plying the roads and the factories, that cause air, noise and water pollution. We now see clearer skies, cleaner streets, breathe fresher air and can hear the bird sing. Along with nature our family lives are also enriched as we all suddenly have so much free quality time to bond with each other by sharing household chores, playing board games, just talking with each other. The virus has not only brought us close together as families, but also as a community and as one nation as we stand together and fight against this common enemy. By taking all necessary precautions, staying safe in our homes, keeping a positive attitude and staying together as one in spirit, someday soon we will be rid of this virus. Tough times don’t last but tough people do. So even this shall pass and in time we will return to our old way of living, but with the wisdom we have gained in these trying times and with more respect for and gratitude towards nature. I glad I have you to speak to and share my thoughts in these trying times.... Love, 27 Zahra

26th May, 2020 Dear Diary, We have officially been quarantined for about 2 months, and saying that I’m bored is going to be a ridiculous understatement. The days during this period have been passed in pointless bickers, complaints, binge-watching and bingeeating. But that doesn’t mean there have been no nice memories, playing games with my sister and mother and spending time where, for once, I feel completely stress free. Needless to say, I do miss my friends, and strangely enough, school. I miss the freedom of being able to go frolicking around whenever I please and I most certainly do miss not having to cover my mouth and hands on the rare occasion that I do step out. As for the situation on the pandemic, sadly, it is not getting any better. We are far from finding a cure anytime soon and the cases keep on skyrocketing, and apparently, we haven’t even reached the peak yet! I am very lucky to be one of the people who has a roof over their head and who has been getting education, food, internet and luxuries that not everyone has been getting in these trying times. My family and I have been trying to help those who are less fortunate, we donated to the PM fund and my grandfather and uncle had started a food drive to feed the families of people who had stopped earning money, or to immigrants who were passing through the village. This time has and will continue to prove to be a challenge for everyone and I hope that we will soon overcome this pandemic. Yours, Samreen Grade 8 A 28

NEPOTISM In 2020 more than Coronavirus there is one virus – Nepotism. Nepotism also acts something like virus, as it is spreading. It is something that can spoil one’s life. As an example we’ve the case of Sushant Singh Rajput. Today all over the world people are supporting him and want justice for him. In other words we can say that nepotism means- people who are one- sided, who take side of their relative or friends even if they are wrong. Nowadays, inconsistent legal frameworks and corruption makes business rely on nepotism. Apart from the case of Sushant Singh Rajput there are more cases that are out of India. Example- Southwest Airlines encourages nepotism, among 13400 employees and 400 are couples. However, by these it cannot be said that nepotism is a good thing. Ways to Reduce Nepotism- 1. Decide their own goals- You can monitor the progress of your employees and project but do not set goals for them. 2. Do not belittle, educate them- If an employee makes a mistake do not undervalue their skills and destroy their confidence. 3. Recognize efforts- You may be busy all the time being a manager but take time to appreciate an employee. -Arya Priyadarshi 6b 30

Dark Matter and Dark Energy 85% of the Unknown Universe -by Aditya Sunke What is Dark Matter? The universe is filled with mysteries that mankind is yet to unravel. Science is filled with interesting questions and unbelievable answers. Science makes us wonder whether there is life on other planets or where a black hole leads to. Space is often considered as the ‘Final Frontier of Mankind’. The universe is one such frontier that has within it many secrets and mysteries that are yet to unfold. Mankind has always been keen in understanding the fundamentals and working of our universe. The concept of dark matter and dark energy holds the secrets to how our universe came into existence. So, the question arises, ‘What exactly is this strange stuff, and what does it have to do with our existence?’ All the objects we can see account for only a small fraction of the entire universe. The normal matter we know about such as stars, planets, galaxies and dust in the entire observable universe accounts for only 15% of the total matter in the universe. The remaining 85% is made up of an invisible and unknown substances. We call these substances, ‘Dark Matter’. Origin Before the Big Bang explosion, there were no matter present. Right after the Big Bang, matter started to get created. According to quantum mechanics, matter is constantly being created and destroyed, but here, matter was being created faster than it was being destroyed. Therefore, matter was being created at a fast rate and the universe was expanding very rapidly. It is believed that normal matter and dark matter was formed during this time. Dark matter was mixed with the hydrogen atoms after the Big Bang. There were some regions where a lot of matter was concentrated. The gravitational pull brought in more matter to the concentrated regions. When there is enough matter, the hydrogen gas, which is mixed with the dark matter, starts to separate and form stars, planets, which form small galaxies w31hich come together to form larger galaxies.

Why is Dark Matter Important? Without dark matter, our universe would not have come into existence. If dark matter did not exist, then after the big bang, the concentrated areas needed to initialize the gravitational pull on other matter would not have happened and the hydrogen atoms could not form stars and galaxies. In a universe with no dark matter, there will be no galaxies, no stars, no planets and human life would not have come into existence. In a universe with no dark matter, only small areas of concentrated matter would exist which are incapable of forming any stars or planets. Ways to Look for Dark Matter Scientists and physicists are searching for dark matter in various ways. Scientists are looking for dark matter underground. Large sensitive detectors have been built underground to look for dark matter. Scientists are waiting for a dark matter particle to hit the sensitive detector and leave a clue about this unknown substance. Special gamma-ray telescopes in space are looking for dark matter. Scientists are hoping for dark matter particles to collide and create high-energy light that we can see with these telescopes. Scientists are also trying to create dark matter by forcing particles to collide with each other and observing what happens. This is being conducted at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. However, we have not yet discovered this mysterious substance, but nevertheless, scientists and physicists are not losing hope. Dark matter holds the secrets to how the universe began and how it’s expanding. The discovery of dark matter will change our perspective of the universe and revolutionize modern Physics. 32

Did you notice , Corona has been in our lives for almost 5 months! All of us have become so bored day by day.. No long drives, no birthday parties.. And especially this online schooling! Zoom, WhatsApp, FaceTime, all these apps have become link to each other( literally! ). But, while this lock down may seem useless, it is quite helpful! Do you want to know how? # It has decreased the numbers of patients drastically Yes, yes I know, you have heard this reason many times.. But it really has! Not in numbers, but in percentage it surely has! # We all have learnt some kind of activity Admit it, whether it’s cooking or painting or learning some kind of instrument, we have increased our offline mode brain activity. # We get to spend more quality time with our relatives. Well, in this lockdown, you get to know more about your family. And you should be noticing that your pets (If you have any..I don’t) are more attached to you, since they really can’t play with their friends.. See! And I know you have some new paintings hanging in the hallway now.. Or a cake waiting to be taken out of the oven. Or an instrument waiting to explore the musical world. Three reasons! And its not like they are the only ones! There are many many more too! So, I bet you have started seeing this lockdown from another perspective! -Diya Kukreja,336B

The world through my window The Corona virus has taken over and governs our daily lives. As I look outside my window, I see a giant corona monster in the grim sky, staring at us all, waiting to prey on us. The rules of human interactions have been altered, thanks to this virus beast, and words like social distancing, self-quarantine, sanitise have become the new norm. It’s best to stay indoors. In the foreground of the future, humanity has transformed itself, grittily crossed the canyon of the lockdown, and climbed its way to a new greener pasture, and struck a new fountainhead for life. The lockdown makes you take a less mundane and more poetic view of everything. This view is something that I look forward to during this lockdown episode of ours. It gives me a little hope that there is some light at the end of the tunnel. There are different kinds of birds that visit us everyday — in different sizes and colours. They spend some time hopping around in our backyard, eat what we give them and go back happily once they are done. I watch them from my window with my cup of milk in hand and a peaceful mind. -RUDRA NAIK-5F 34

Stem Cells- A Wonderful Therapy - by Priyadarshini Shome Medical science and its researches have always overwhelmed me since I was a little girl. Recently I have been spending some time researching and reading about the wonders of stem cell and how this magnificent discovery has made overcoming numerous challenges medically possible. Here is a little insight into the world of stem cell technology. So what are stem cells? Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can divide and proliferate into many specialized cell types. Originally, stem cells make up the organs or our body during a foetal growth and development. Stem cells can be manipulated according to the desired cell type, which provides a promising result to treat or prevent a disease or condition without any side effects. This article discusses the potential areas of stem cell therapy of diseased, dysfunctional or injured tissues. What are the curable diseases? o Neuro-degeneration Brain degeneration, such as in Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and Multiple sclerosis worsen with time. Healthy neural stem cells have the capability to divide and differentiate to form specialized neural cells. This approach was used to develop endogenous neural stem cells that induced neuroprotection and behavioral recovery in rats. o Brain and spinal cord injury Stroke and traumatic brain injury causing loss of neurons and oligodendrocytes within the brain lead to cell death. Clinical and animal studies use stem cells to treat spinal cord injury. o Heart Clinical trials used bone marrow stem cell therapy to improve critical heart conditions. The mechanisms involved are generation of h35eart muscle cells and stimulating growth of new blood vessels.

o Pancreatic beta cells Beta cells of pancreas are responsible to produce insulin, responsible for glucose metabolism. Type I diabetic patients do not contain beta cells. Scientists are producing beta cells in labs, improving the condition of diabetic patients. o Blood-cell formation Stem cell approaches to treating people with HIV primarily involve replacing the person’s immune system with one that the virus can’t infect. o Regrowing teeth Tooth regeneration technology is used to grow live teeth in people. Stem cells that are taken from a patient are coaxed in the lab and then into a tooth bud which gives rise to a new tooth after implantation in the gums over three weeks. It fuses with the jawbone and releases chemicals that encourages nerves and blood vessels to connect with it. It is however challenging. o Vision impairment Researchers have successfully transplanted corneal stem cells into damaged eyes to restore vision. Retinal cells are transplanted over the damaged cornea to stimulate renewed repair, eventually restore vision. o Orthopedics and Wound healing Stem cells can also be used to stimulate the growth of human tissues-such as wounded fetal tissue. They have gained interest for the treatment of skin cancer. 36

What are the areas and purpose of research? Stem cells are useful not only as potential therapies but also for research purposes. Stem cells are being studied for therapies for a number of reasons o It helps us identify the functions of genes and the causes and effects of mutations on the gene. This helps to discover the causes of a wide range of illnesses and conditions. o Abnormal cell division and differentiation are responsible for conditions that include cancer and congenital disabilities that stem from birth. Knowing what causes the cells to divide in the wrong way could lead to a cure. o Stem cells also help in the development of new drugs, where the drugs are tested on tissues developed from stem cells instead of using humans and animals as targets. This helps to perform multiple tests without killing lives. 37

“LIFE BECOMES A FESTIVAL WHEN GAIETY AND CULTURE BLEND” Celebrations have always been an integral part of the cultural fabric at EuroSchool Undri. Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami as it is popularly known, was celebrated virtually with a lot of gaiety and grandeur by the pre- primary students at EuroSchool Undri on 10th 48 August’20.

The greatness of a culture can be found in its festival and true to these words was Ganesh Chaturthi 2020 which was celebrated in EuroSchool Undri on 22nd August. The present pandemic situation did slacken the celebration but could not dampen the festive spirit. The idol staphna was carried out by our Principal and the Admin staff with vim and zest. All invoked their Prayers to the Almighty to bless the school and our students in days to come. 49
