Narjes Mohammadi Hasmik | PORTFOLIO BIOGRAPHY Narjes Mohammadi was born in 1985 in Mashhad. She fell in love with drawing at her grandparents› house while growing up in Mashhad. Narjes works predominately in the medium of painting and illustrating. Narjes completed a BFA in Graphic Design with distinction at the Shariati Technical College in Tehran in 2009, and then she delved herself into illustration by taking a two years course in Iranian Illustrators Society. She has been working professionally as an independent illustrator and editor on chief of Brightness magazine. Narjes learned how to paint and illustrate by studying works by her favorite artists and by making lots of paintings; she learned what to paint by studying books on Asian history, world mythology, and family photo albums. Narjes is a digital painter and traditionalist painter. She creates New Traditional Asian Art by fusing modern narrative with eastern sensibility. She mixed elements of Persian art and motifs with modern painting on canvas and wood panels. She introduced her inspiration sources in this way: “As an Eastern artist, I’ve always inspired by nature as the first and most important point for artistic work as well as Iranian miniature heritages. An intense interest to Chinese philosophy which encourages the public to study trees and listen to the sound of them lead to making a collection of paintings base named (Bird Woman). “Personally speaking, I think it was the prominent point of my life as an independent artist. Beside that, I can’t ignore the important role of Frida in my artistic life. Since I was a teenager, I’m impressed by her courageous and skillfulness in presenting her beliefs and ideas.” In this serials, it became clear that the artist would commit to a certain idea of freedom and bravery of artist’s soul. She talked 2

Narjes Mohammadi Hasmik | PORTFOLIO Color Pencil & Digital Painting BIRD WOMAN This collection is about men and women who try to discover their own world and their invisible effects on others’ life. Undoubtedly, such a journey of discovery is not easy. It requires great courage and honest to face yourself at high and low points in your life. In starting this project, my aim was to show people the invisible ropes that have a deep influence on our lives and make us follow movements, thoughts, and vagabond ideologies without knowing where they all lead to. I don’t want to tell the public for that matter, how to act. I want to show how much more beautiful life can be if we untie the ropes that bind us and let our spirits spread their wings in flight. To start this project I was inspired by looking at the women of Iran and their all-too- visible barriers, but the more I delved into this matter, the more questions arose in my mind. I began to see a greater number of invisible ropes that have not only been tied around the women of Iran, but also around women all around the world. These invisible ropes have taken away the freedom of both people and countries by restricting free movement. Free movement of people, that is the freedom of thought and action, is the deeper definition of freedom, not just the superficial meaning. The invisible, freedom- restricting ropes are called by different names in different countries. In some places they are called “religion”, while in other places they take the name of “tradition”, or “politics”. These ropes even take on different colors, shapes, and smells, but they can be identified by the fact that their appearance makes us forget about the real meaning of freedom. I believe that if we discover the world by ourselves without the intervention of politics, the media, relatives, and teachers, then everything around us will take on a new meaning. May our minds fly like birds. 4
