Invasive Species Meme Story Jaiden Masters
What is the origin of the Mute Swans? Mute swans originate from Eurasia, but were Introduced to north america during the mid 1800’s.
How did they get brought here? Mute swans were introduced to North America in the mid-1800s to decorate parks and estates, and later brought to Michigan in 1919. These captive swans escaped and established a feral population.
What kind of biological threat are they? Since mute swans are non-migratory, they reduce the available habitat for native breeding and wintering birds year round. Due to their aggressive territorial behavior, mute swans have caused the nest abandonment of least terns and black skimmers, both threatened species.
What are the efforts/process of removing this species? Though hunting mute swans is not allowed, the DNR issues permits to remove mute swans and/or their nests and eggs. If you have mute swans on your property and wish to remove them or their nests and eggs, you must request a permit from your local DNR office.
