SUSTAINABILITY AT TATA POWER A Century of Invisible Goodness COP 21- What it really means? COP 21 culminated into the landmark adoption of Paris Agreement as 195 governments agreed to the world’s first universal climate deal. It has been hailed as historic, transformative, and momentous, as it supersedes the Kyoto Protocol, with countries pledging to hold global temperatures to a maximum rise of 1.50C above pre- industrial level, staving off the worst effects of catastrophic global warming. Countries agreed to peak greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as soon as possible and to achieve carbon neutrality between 2050 and 2100. This means limiting emissions to the level that can be naturally absorbed by forests, oceans and soil. It also includes raising $100bn a year by 2020 to help poor countries adapt their economies, accept a new goal of zero net emissions by later this century, accelerated phase-out of fossil fuels, growth of renewable energy streams and powerful new carbon markets to enable countries to trade emissions and protect forests.
