Director's Message Dear Students, We have been together in a pandemic for more than two years and the challenging times, albeit a bit better now, continue to be a hurdle in many ways. However, we have learnt a lot from all the experiences and we shall continue to build a community that is open and is always growing. That is the core of who we are at CIS. The initiative of an e-newsletter is helping all of us to build a strong digital community. I am glad that the first edition of the newsletter received appreciation from all sections of students and the contributions to the newsletter are of good quality. I heartily congratulate the team for working together with the same zeal to bring out the tenth edition now with the hopes of promoting responsible expression, challenging ideas, peer-to-peer influence, and much more. May this newsletter too provide a voice and serve as a medium to harvest our skills for the future! I request all the students of CIS to use this opportunity to showcase creativity, explore and discover new interests and follow up on new ideas. I trust the team who are working for the newsletter will continue the good work and hope this will prove to be a milestone in the digital journey of CIS. Cheers! Stay safe. B.V. Sharma 4

Long ago, before the era of hate, misery and crime HAPPINESS Lived the temptress Happiness, singing her own winsome rhyme Anindya Biswal, 20IPMH01 A temptress she was, so beautiful, peaceful and bright Sallow and haggard faces sought her out, like a moth seeks light Happiness loved to flirt with the men and women around her She loved to get close to them and purr But as soon as the men and women reciprocated her love She vanished, and ran away, leaving them despondent in a world interested in push and shove But soon, guilt caught up to Happiness, and she felt sad She henceforth decided, that she would always be there for everyone, whether for good or bad So she alighted on Earth, and beseeched all the men and women to take her into their grasp Greedy and lonely as they were, they readily took her offer up into their selfish clasp. Finally, utopia was achieved, everyone was happy and nice Happiness felt proud of herself; now existed no conflict, no hate and no vice But the World, in which the men and women resided, had some other things in his mind And Happiness, naive and happy, did not notice these looming dangers, disguised with shades of ‘kind’ Cyclones, disease and floods struck the now ever-happy humankind Everything was destroyed; but the humans were still happy even though they now lived in a tight bind Happiness felt shocked; the whole world was destroyed, people were dying very fast How come nobody was helping each other, and trying to make things better than their own past? That’s when Happiness realized her mistake and started to cry That the World and its men and women will never change until faced with a lack of her; their hearts bone-dry Only then will they reach out to each other and extend their hands Sharing with each other stories and feelings of love, empathy and of tales of peaceful times and lands With this realization, Happiness departed from all men and women; back to her own era and space and time Where she continued to occasionally flirt with people, reaching out to them, and singing her own happy rhyme. 8

Thoughts of You Keervani Kandala, 20ICMC32 Oh Mother! You were there when I was in distress, You were the most wonderful mistress. You were there when I was in sorrow; and taught me to borrow-good, from everything. You taught me about “If” *Now, I became the protagonist of “If” My life became the story of “If”. \"If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same. Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And-which is more-you'll be a Man, my son!\" I became a Man today, But am always your Son every today.* Oh Mother! You wished me Good luck for my life, Hoped that you'd wish the same to my wife, However, you weren't there. Oh I forgot! ‘Am getting married tonight, To whom I'd be with every night. Before, your touch would make me happy. Now, Even the thought of you makes me unhappy. My life is Incomplete, You'd make it Complete. 11
I earn so much, But yearn for your presence too much. Oh Mother! You wanted me to become big in life. ‘Am big now, But you aren’t there now. Whatever it might be, You are my mother, For there is no other, who had such an impact on my life, Maybe my wife. Thank you mother, for this life. Even without you, my life became complete Because, I found a person like you- my wife. No one could ever take up your place. You are the best ever thing that has ever happened to me. But one thing! You knew everything, You didn’t tell me anything, You just left me behind with nothing. (*Lines 6-13 are a reference to the poem \"If\" by Rudyard Kipling.) 12

Being A Man Syed Afroz, 19IPMP23 I remember the first time I cried I was with one of my girlfriends A girl who was my friend-“girlfriend” She was like- “Can you cry”? It’s not only her reaction I see most of the people giving an unusual reaction When they see men crying Just to inform We are also made of the same organic matter that you are made of. We are Men, not the Ironmen Even Ironmen have cried To the one who says men don’t cry Just know, Blood flows through our veins, not the aspirin In the middle of the night Covered myself with a blanket Wetting my pillow Holding my voice I cry. I cry for having a bad day I cry for being ignored I cry for every small thing I lost I cry for not having my favourite food at lunch I cry for not getting that one call that I waited for I cry for being ignored by that one person It’s how my half of the night is passed Then I wake up With a smile on my face. I cry at night when I’m alone That doesn’t mean I’m afraid of crying in from of people It’s just I don’t want to shed my tears in front of the one who can’t understand it It’s not just the tears that come out of eyes when one cries It’s their emotions The emotions that the heart can’t hold on to more the emotions about which the mind can’t think more. 14
So, please Stop saying that man don’t cry Tears aren’t an indication to decide gender. Besides, no one is born with a smile on their face We all are born with a crying face! Mostly I’m judged for almost everything I do If I cry my manhood is questioned. If I treat women with chivalry, I will be called as desperate If I do things without asking, (discussing) I’m selfish If I deny doing anything, I’m not interested. For me being good is being suffocating. People can't see you the way you see yourself And you can't see yourself the way people see you. Having a smile on your face doesn't mean you are happy. Doing things on time doesn't mean you are fine Stuck in a riddle so called life Darkness, hopelessness, and loneliness being my best friends Making me feel paralyzingly numb. It's not easy to explain What's going on in my brain. Never want to open my eyes in the morning but one second Can you sleep in every past night? Sleep being my enemy Which doesn't come to me Giving me the scars that don't bleed My nights are passed In long talks with myself about how things should have been But couldn't be. Then there comes the morning Rushing to start the day Should I wear a shirt or a t-shirt? The red one or the black What people will think And the day passes in thinking thinking and thinking At last, no one cares People are least worried about the way they hurt you The only thing they point to is the way you react to it. You can break up if it's a relationship and move on But how to move on from these thoughts, feelings, emotions? 15

MANTHAN Alum talk series Episode 9 For the ninth episode of the Manthan alum talk series, Kedar Kulkarni, an alumnus of the IMA economics programme joined us. He is a recipient of the prestigious Erasmus Mundus scholarship and did his masters in Paris University- Panthéon -Sorbonne and later in the Ca' Foscari University of Venice. He completed his PhD at Oregon state university, specializing in development economics and is currently an assistant professor at Azim Premji University in Bangalore Experience at CIS and UoH When I first started the IMA economics programme, it was a new programme back then, and we did not know what it would be like. One of the best things about the IMA programme is that it gives you a holistic understanding of social sciences as a whole. You are allowed to take courses across subjects, and this makes it a unique programme. If you look at the CIS programme, it grounds you in the classical theories and in the fundamentals, and helps you think from an economic perspective. We had an influx of very experienced faculty who were well- known around the country. They were outstanding in guiding me. The IMA programme was one of the basic foundations for me to look at economics from a research perspective. I always wanted to do something in research, and a brief stint in the industry made it clear that the 9-5 job is not for me. Regarding social life, it is the first time you are entering into a college, and it is a big transition, and students should embrace this transition. I was friends with people outside of my programme and was also active in sports, and these were really good experiences. 18
Significance of Internships Back then, HCU had some MoUs with universities in the US and Canada, and it was pure luck that I received the internship with the University of Alberta. They sent out a small advertisement for a research assistant, saying that they would like someone from economics to apply, and there were people from other subjects also who applied. After a small interview, they sent me an offer letter. Once you go abroad, you realize that the systems are very different from India in terms of academia. I was given a lot of freedom to do things. When I was there, I was under a nice supervisor for three months, and that's where I started my research. Initially, I started looking at the fossil fuel industry and environmental economics. Another internship I did was in IIM Ahmedabad. This was actually through a faculty member. Some of the internships I got were because of professors telling me about opportunities. That's why I keep telling you that you should be in touch with professors because they are aware of opportunities. The last internship was at IIM Bangalore, which was a full-time position. After my IMA, I applied for an academic position at IIM Bangalore as a research associate. Internships give you a nice exposure and experience. It will provide you with an idea about what you like and don't like. It is one way to explore and figure out what it is that you are interested in. Prospects of finding a job are the same for someone who did or did not do internships. It helps you make contact, and the recommendations you get from the people are also valuable. Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Regarding the Erasmus Mundus programme, these are European Union based scholarships, so you have to be admitted to universities that are part of the programme. When I applied for PHDs abroad, I was rejected due to a lack of sufficient mathematical skills required for the programmes, so I applied to this master’s programme. For these European Union-based scholarships, the application is relatively simple. They need only your CV, transcripts, Statement of Purpose, and Letter of Recommendation. 19
The European programmes are free, which was also a real motivation to apply. There are various types of Erasmus Mundus scholarship programmes. One is the Erasmus Mundus consortium scholarship, a free tuition scholarship. They also give you a monthly allowance for your stay and everything. There are also other Erasmus scholarships like the one I got, which was around 12,000 euros; out of this, my tuition was 4000 euros. It is essential to get an overall picture of the programme you are applying to before you get into a programme, be sure that it is something you want to do. There are other prestigious scholarships like the Inlaks scholarship and the Rhodes scholarship, which you can look into. PhD in the United States In PhD programmes in the US, they look at the candidates' mathematical background, interests, and CGPA, and in their 4-point scale, you need at least 3.5-3.7, which is the cut off for decent PhD programmes. I did a PhD in applied economics in the US, which is more specialized. I focused on environmental economics and climate change, which is my research interest. You can always look for these specialized programs where you have a better chance of getting in than a traditional program. In the US, the first two years you are supposed to do coursework, you can't start your research until the end of the second year. In Europe, PhD candidates are chosen based on projects, so if a professor has an opening in a project, they will open a public position on their website or web portal, saying they are hiring. Career in Economics There are broadly three parts to a career in economics: you can enter research or academia where ideally you want to be a research associate or an assistant professor or work for an NGO in some capacity. Secondly, there is the industrial sector; these days, people who hire economists are banks and big companies like Amazon, Google, etc. The third sector is civil services, and in my opinion, our programme is one of the best for civil service aspirants. 20
Importance of Math in Economics It took me a long time to figure out that math is essential, and until the end of my fourth year, I never took any math-related courses. But when I was applying for PhD programmes, I realized the importance of math. Math courses like calculus, linear algebra, real analysis, and statistics are the absolute minima you need to know to do a PhD in economics. Econometrics is also essential, as it will help you get a decent paying job in the industrial sector. These days economists also need to know basic programming skills. I could not go for some industrial jobs that interested me due to a lack of basic programming skills. Environmental Economics In Environmental Economics, most of the research now is in econometrics. Since there is a lot of data available, we are trying to figure out how climate change affects specific sectors. In my research, I focus on agriculture, how droughts and floods affect agriculture, how farmers cope with these events because farmers are always worried about facing such events. That is the new development in environmental economics- how various events affect various human indicators. (This is an excerpt of the full talk, which is available on the website of Manthan: https://sites.google.com/view/manthan-uoh/home ) 21
Trikonadweep: the submerged paradise Episode 2: The glowing stone Nikitha Donthula, 20IPMH15 Tara and her friends- Varun, Pranay, Yunay and Hina were really shocked to know the favour asked to them by the leader of Aadi (the ethnic group), Maya. They left the court with many questions in their head regarding the favour asked by Maya. The next morning, Tara was in deep thought as she thought about the dream, which portrays her as a brave warrior; little did she know is that this dream was the consequence of Tara touching the glowing stone while leaving to the tent. Upon telling her friends about it, she gets to know that Pranay and Hina also got dreams which had a similar background. Later, everybody discussed whether or not to take up the favour asked by Maya. Upon a lengthy discussion, they concluded to take up the task as they came to Mallard with a cause that required such adventure. Before leaving the monkey cave, this group of friends visited Maya to know about the ritual in detail and obtained some help from her men, who come along with them to the tree bridge. Yunay asked the group of men to come along with them to the cave, but they refused to come further because nobody should be present in the radius of 5 km except for those who perform the ritual. In the journey to the monkey cave, Tara and her friends experienced various ecosystems like waterfalls, forests, rivers, mountains and escarpment. Not only was this ecological experience visually pleasing, but it was also arduous, especially when they had to walk on a high mountain ledge to reach the cave. After crossing the ledge, they finally reached the cave and faced another challenge to open the cave entrance. This cave only opened when an object was placed on the bronze shelf attached to the wall near the entrance. This object, too, should be of a particular weight and size which will be able to lift the barricade blocking the entrance. Tara took the power bank and placed it over the shelf, and soon the entrance opened. As soon as they entered the cave, they could not miss looking at the beautiful carvings and paintings which depicted the life of people who lived 1600 years ago. Tara, Pranay and Hina especially were amazed by the paintings because the clothing and the characters were similar to the dream that they got. 22
When they went further, they saw a large wheel carved in the cave; this wheel had two movable wheels inside it. Upon turning the wheel in the right direction, one could enter the core of the cave. Nobody knew how this could be operated and searched for solutions, and meanwhile, Pranay came up with a solution. As per his knowledge in history, the key to open the wheel was with the Aadi, and this key was nothing but a pattern depicted in their dance form. He said that in many practicing ancient cultures, the people used folklores, dance forms and rituals to pass on the important messages to future generations. This was why he thought that the pattern in which they danced around the three rope circles was the key to entering the core. With Pranay's clue, Hina's recollection of the pattern and the team's courage, Yunay and Varun moved the wheels. When the wheels were being moved, all of them prayed to God to keep them safe from the system, which releases arrows automatically if someone tilts the wheels in the wrong direction and lifts the lever. After the wheels were moved in the right direction, Varun and Yunay lifted the lever, and the wheel opened successfully. All of them entered the cave with joy and finally reached the core of the cave. Tara placed the stone on the small pyramid structure similar to Kekua. She asked everybody to stand around it and hold the hands of each other in a forward position to recite a mantra given by Maya. One by one, everybody started reciting the mantra and activated the five points below the joined hands. Tara was the first to recite the mantra, followed by Pranay, Yunay, Hina and Varun. As soon as Varun completed the mantra recitation, a huge glow of light appeared from the stone, which indicated that the knowledge had been transferred to the universe from the stone egg. Everybody opened their eyes with joy that they completed the task with great difficulty, and now they had to return to Maya's court with the stone.
