FROM HOMELESSNESS TO HOPE: JIM’S JOURNEY OF RECOVERY AND REDEMPTION WITH THE HELP OF BOISE RESCUE MISSION MINISTRIES When you meet Jim, you immediately notice his humility and confidence, but Monday - Friday 5am - 10am seven years ago, Jim wouldn’t have seen this in himself. I would even get stuff out of the dumpster to trade for drugs.” During the winter of 2016/2017 - ‘Snowmageddon’ - Jim lived out of a storage unit in Nampa. He says, “I thought I was going to freeze to death. I bought some drugs and would have taken my own life, but the drugs froze in the syringe. I was so angry at the time! I remember praying to God either to let me die or to help me.” Jim found the help he prayed for at Boise Rescue Mission Ministries here in the Treasure Valley. At first, he just came for food. But one day, while in a detox program, he heard Rev. Bill Roscoe, Rescue Mission President/CEO, talking on TV. The very next day, he found an application for the Rescue Mission’s New Life Discipleship & Recovery Program. This 12 to 24-month addiction recovery program at the Mission provides discipleship, accountability, and a Bible-based curriculum designed to help participants learn to live clean and sober, allowing them the opportunity to change their lives for good and succeed as Christ- centered, self-sufficient members of the community. Jim says some hard things have happened since he graduated from the Program in 2018. “I lost two cousins and my brother to Fentanyl. It was hard for me to deal with that. But through it all, God was right there beside me. “But there have been great changes in my life too. I have a successful career. I just got married. My kids are back in my life. I have three amazing step-kids. I love doing fun things with my family, sober, and having my head in the game. “I believe the big thing for people to find long-term recovery is to find Jesus Christ and put Him first. Then, everything else will just fall into place. My advice for men and women struggling with addiction is to reach out; there are so many resources to help. “If it were not for the generous people in this community who make the New Life Program at the Rescue Mission possible, I wouldn’t be here, and I wouldn’t have my life back.
