It is also the same as an approximate 1665-1675 ax that is illustrated by Nicholas (“Codex Canadensis and the Writings of Louis Nicholas….1700) as also shown by Miller. A search through the standard treatise American Indian Tomahawks by Harold Peterson, 1971, does not show this maker’s mark. The Three Ancient Great Basin Baskets Fred N. Holabird The three “ancient” baskets in this sale are from the approximate 15,000 years. Center coiled, heavily repaired by period use, heavily worn. ND thinks the same person that wove the basket did the repair. Appears to have pine pitch sealing the weaving. Broken rim all over, flat central 9” bottom. This is an absolutely fabulous piece. Clearly used for everyday cooking, not ceremonial. appears to be single rod construction, but the nature of the single rods (material) is not known. This piece, and its two companion flat cooking baskets are from the Great Basin Collection of Lot# 4045 Nevada Ancient Flat Basket Historic and possibly ancient baskets, points and art, on display on Main Street In Fernley, Nevada, flat cooking basket, 25” in diameter, with a large missing broken for about 50 years. Custom glass and wood case. Delicate. Found on section in bottom area of frame about 3 x 9”. Period repairs, typical, private property in northwestern Nevada about 50 years ago. The repairs are remarkably well done, both in stitching and in rod replacement. There are no visible patterns, other than burn marks from charcoal. As told us by ND, charcoal was often placed on top of the goods cooked, and it was commonplace for coals to burn through the basket. The fame also contains three projectile points and a scraper. One of the projectile points is a reddish white chert. possibly from Steamboat or McDermitt. This is very clearly an abandoned cooking basket, not ceremonial, and shows no evidence of having been buried.
