Ice was a valuable commodity in the one engraving (“Lake Tahoe via Trail 1870’s. It was used in the mines at Virginia City as the underground Route”) loose but present; two leaves bound in twice-- those bearing temperatures were stifling. Ice was also used to refrigerate rail cars to pages 37-40; one engraving lacking (“Mammoth Load of Logs”) but ship California produce to the east. The lakes near Truckee and Donner no evidence it was ever bound in; one leaf of ads removed, the next Pass would freeze over in the winters and the ice was cut into blocks to last. Very scarce. This company made and sold condensed milk, cheese, and butter from milk supplied by member farms in the Carson, Mason and Smith Valleys, Nevada; Lyon County, Nevada; and Novato, in Marin County, California. In 1892, they became the California-Nevada Creamery Company. TR Hofer was an imporant banking figure in Carson City and also once served as the superintendent for the Carson City Mint.
