The original glass is still present on the left side, absent on the right side. No photos present, but this appears to have been for small tin-type photos, possibly from the 1860-1865 period. One side of the pendant has four chambers artistically arranged by a jeweler. Two large segments are a milky rose quartz with native gold throughout. The rose color is from oxidized iron staining in the quartz occurring naturally. The two small stones at top and bottom of the jeweler’s design are triangles of tiger-eye, which would have been equally rare as the gold in the mid-nineteenth century. Very fine condition. 256Nov 2021DAY 5 Mon, Nov 22 Jewelry Lot# 5463 Virginia City, Nevada Red Dog Saloon “Since 1965” Sign An original Red Dog Saloon sign that hung inside, signed by “Woody”. “Since 1965” . Rounded corners. 50 x 50.” Woody was a bartender at the Red Dog, was an established artist, and lived at the Chism Trailer Park in Reno. Provenance: Pierce Powell Collection. Historic V & T Railroad Depot CollectionEst. $325-2000 HWAC# 103139Lot#5464VirginiaCity,Nevada 2003 Red Dog Saloon, Original Sign dated 2003 Original oil on board sign for the world-famous Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City. This sign is signed by the artist at lower right “Miss Kitty 2/03”. 43.5” wide, 48” tall. No frame. Pierce Powell Collection. Modeled after the original Red Dog Saloon sign but in its own spirit, this high quality painted sign well reflects the fusion between the 1960’s psychedelic art and a more modernistic style. The Red Dog changed hands several times, and this sign reflects ownership right after the turn into the twenty first century. This sign hung inside above the stage. The author of the sign “Miss Kitty” is in clear reference to Miss Kitty, the Madame of the Long Branch Saloon in the TV series “Gunsmoke,” from which the Red Dog Saloon was loosely modeled after it was purchased and revamped from the Comstock Saloon to the Red Dog Saloon in 1965. “Miss Kitty” was a local Virginia City artist who painted the murals in the basement of one of the Virginia City churches. She worked in the kitchen at the Red Dog. Provenance: Pierce Powell Collection. Historic V & T Railroad Depot CollectionEst. $325-2500 HWAC# 103137Lot# 5465 Virginia City, Nevada Virginia City Red Dog Saloon -Birth Place of Psychedelic Rock! Original 1965 Sign This is the most important of the Red Dog Saloon signs, as it is the original to hang outside the building in 1965. It is in need of restoration, painted on plywood and crackling. No artist signature, but Pierce Powell states it was painted by Barbara Stein, a neighbor of Don Works in Virginia City. The sign was repainted and “restored” by Don Works himself when he gave it to Pierce Powell. The sign is 8 feet in diameter, composed of two large halves connected by three 1 x 4” slats on the back. IMPORTANT NOTICEWe are transitioning from print catalogs to online catalogs!Collecting the West since 1984We are changing our approach to printed catalogs! A vast majority of our bidders have demonstrated a preference and appreciation for the online version of our catalogs. Not only do our online catalogs offer you the most up-to-date descriptions and photos, you also have the ability to see current and opening bid status, as well as register and place bids right away! While the Holabird print catalogs have been an important reference publication in the past, they are unfortunately out of date the moment they are printed. By modernizing our business model and adapting to the digital era we not only have the opportunity to reduce unnecessary paper waste, we are also able to bring you the most current and relevant catalogs in an easy to use online format. For our active bidders who do not use online resources have no fear; we will not be eliminating the print catalogs altogether. Our goal is to continue producing a reduced print catalog featuring highlighted items from each auction. Additional lots will still be available for viewing online as usual. If you are a bidder who needs and prefers a printed catalog in order to view lots and bid, please reach out to us and let us know. We will do our best to accommodate all of our clients!
