Naja is silver set with a turquoise stone (naja is bent a bit), 35” long. Probably a pawn piece, this necklace is different than most of its kind with the squash blossoms interspersed. “It was ingenious of some unknown Native artist to create a squash blossom necklace using repurposed materials--United States dimes and half dollars. We don’t know who was the first to do so or exactly when the first one was made, but it was probably in the late 1970s. Supposedly it is illegal to deface United States coins but that did not stop the creation of this and other similar necklaces.” (courtesy, Adobe Gallery, Santa fe, NM) Est. $1200-3000 HWAC# 136901Lot#4092ArizonaNavajo and Hopi Jewelry 1) Twisted silver cuff marked with the “Tahe” name on inside. Roger Coyne appears as the proprietor of the saloon in newspaper articles dating back to 1885. In 1893, the saloon was the site of a shooting by Coyne. On Feb. 24th, 1893, “Roger Coyne, the bartender, had some difficulty with a Frenchman employed at the coal mines and used a revolver to assist in ejecting him from the saloon. He struck the man over the head with the gun, inflicting a severe wound. He also fired one shot. Whom it was fired at or whether the gun went off accidentally, is not known, but the bullet struck Charles Jones in the right thigh. Dr. Scott dressed the wound, which will probably not prove serious. The only arrest made so far is that of the Frenchman.” [The Fairplay Flume, March 2, 1893] Como is located in Park County. It is probably named after Como, Italy, since Italian miners worked the coal fields there. In 1879, the town became the location of a depot of the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad. Globeville is a suburb north of Denver, founded in the 1880s around the Globe Smelting and Refining Company. Max Malich played an important role in this community, and was known as the “King of Globeville.” He was an Australian immigrant that was the leader of the smelter workers union. He helped organize a workers strike in 1903. In 1907, Malich was involved in one of the most celebrated trials of the 20th century, the trial of “Big Bill” Haywood for ordering the assassination of former Idaho Gov. Frank Steunenberg. Confessed assassin Harry Orchard accused Malich of once talking about blowing up a Globeville hotel full of non-union miners. (The hotel was never blown up.) Malich also supposedly wanted to blow up a Globeville grocery store operated by a competitor. During the trial, Malich took the stand and denied all of Orchard’s charges. Malich was cleared of all charges. But, in September 1907, his grocery store and meat market were destroyed in a mysterious explosion. Malich and his family later moved to the Western Slope, where he ran a large ranch in Montrose County. 16 to 1 refers to the effort of the western states involved in silver mining to keep the price of silver close to the price of gold.
