Coins were sold to collectors at an issue price of $10.00 per coin. This was a big premium to the uncirculated “Blue Ikes,” which were offered for only $3.00 per coin. Paperwork describes the dollar’s specifications (.900 fine silver; .77 troy oz.) and the designer’s background. Profits from the sale of these coins benefited the U. S. Olympic team. These are the first Olympic commemorative coins ever issued by the United States Mint. The obverse of the coin features a dramatic depiction of the traditional Greek discus thrower, inspired by the work of Myron. Three outlines are shown to create the impression of motion.
