DAY 4 Monday, June 25 General Americana Lot# 4018 , c 1935 Wilcox Gay Art-Deco-Style, 3-Band Tube Radio This is an Art-Deco-style tube radio with the name WILSON GAY at the bottom of the three-band dial (broadcast, shortwave and long-wave). The words “MODEL 3JM6 7-2” appears handwritten on the metal chassis of the electronics, and serial number 91638 is stamped into the patent description plate. Antiqueradio.com refers to this design as the Model A15. The approximately 4.5”H x 6.5”W tuning dial is slightly stained by the lubricating material of the tuning device behind it. The dial indicator has a decorative aluminum hub with a two-inch copper pointer extending to the edge of the dial. The possibly-walnut wood case is in very good condition with few nicks or scratches and a 1/4-inch triangle of missing veneer in the lower left corner of the front panel. The speaker itself has been replaced with a 6-inch paper-cone speaker and is concealed from the front by a tan fabric and supported by an attractive, and probably original, Art-Deco-style metal grille. Three Bakelite-like knobs below the dial control the receiving bands, tuning, and on-off/volume control. Power cord is included, but the electronics are not tested. There is a “PHONO” connection on the lower left of the electronic chassis that allowed an external phonograph player to be connected. Case dimensions are approximately 14.375”H x 11.75”W x 7.375”D. Angel (1881) is also silent on the subject except a minor mention. Angel spent more time discussing the construction of competing roads started after 1862. Lord (1883) discusses the toll roads over the Sierra in fair detail as a business, but does not mention the first road of Kingsbury-McDonald, instead also focusing on the post-1862 roads. Mack (1935) makes no mention whatsoever, an apparent major omission. DeGroot mentions the road only in general terms, but does not mention the route by name, nor specifics (1876). The same held true for DeQuille (1876). Summary D.D. Kingsbury by published accounts appears to have begun a toll road from Carson Valley to Tahoe about 1859, according to Carlson. The contracts in this archive, however, indicate the work did not begin until early 1860 (the possibility exists that these contracts were for “upgrades” or improvements). D.D. Kingsbury appears to have died about April, 1863, and may have died in the same avalanche that killed his brother A.B. Kingsbury (more research needed). While some historical writers have maintained the road was built by the two brothers with McDonald, not a single contract attests to this notion. Kingsbury’s land contracts called for the outright purchase of land for the toll road, which started near Van Sickle’s house in Carson Valley. The toll road then ran up toward Lake Valley (Tahoe). At the same time, it appears Geo. W. Swan was building the other end of the Carson to Placerville toll road starting near Placerville. He also purchased land just wide Lot# 4266 Carson Valley / Lake Tahoe, Nevada-California enough for a road, promising to erect a board fence on both The Kingsbury Grade Papers sides, five boards high. When D.D. Kingsbury died, Swan became Est. $2000-4000 HWAC# 67009 the attorney, and completed the necessary property deals to complete the road. The lower portion of Swan’s toll road had several toll stations near Placerville. Swan’s Upper Toll House was located in 244 June 2018 - Treasures From Pacific Shores Auction
