This amazing piece is not only finely detailed, but there is a completely finished scene carved and painted on the back of the piece. The scene shows a black ogre and a corn maiden, plus two other figures--just fabulous. 10” x 3.5” x 3.5”. The kachina is unsigned, but my research finds the artist may have been Brian Honyouti (1947-2016). He had started carving katsina dolls in the 1960s after graduating from high school. He helped his dad paint his dolls and learned to carve his own at that time. The “Warrior Mouse” is not a William Whitney of Little Valley, Mendocino, katsina but is a Hopi legend loved by the young and collected in the 1930’s-1940’s.
