SSIO International Medical Conference SSE Kit Breathe Easy - Breathe it to Believe it! By: Sophia (Sruthi B., Group 1, USA ), Dr. Hum (Sathya B., Group 3, USA)

Breathe Easy The joy we get from singing bhajans and by performing worship is temporary. But by experiencing the essence of \"Soham\" Mantra, you will get eternal joy. This soham is also known by the name \"Hamsa Gayatri\". \"So\" means \"that\", \"Ham\" means \"I am\". \"I am that\" is the meaning of Soham. You should chant Soham with every breath. When you breathe, you are inhaling \"So\" and you are exhaling \"Ham\". If we repeat Soham Mantra with every inhalation and exhalation of breath, it will do a lot of good to you. Repeat \"Soham\" with every breath and watch your breath carefully. May 2002

Breath Easy Pulmonology or Respiratory medicine is a medical speciality that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract (the parts that help us breathe!)

Upper Respiratory System 1. Nose and Nasal Cavity. The nose and nasal cavity forms the main external opening for the respiratory system 2. Nostril - A nostril is one of the two channels of the nose. Its function is to warm air on inhalation and remove moisture on exhalation. 3. Mouth or Oral cavity - Acts as the opening for food and air. 4. Throat or Pharynx - The pharynx is part of both the digestive and respiratory systems 5. Voice box or Larynx - Larynx, is located between the pharynx and the trachea. It is a 2-inch-long, tube-shaped organ in the neck. 6. Windpipe or Trachea - The trachea is a wide, hollow tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi of the lungs

Lower Respiratory System 7. Bronchi and Bronchioles - Bronchi are the main passageways into the lungs. The bronchi become smaller as they get closer to the lung tissue thus known as the Bronchioles. These passageways then evolve into tiny air sacs called alveoli, where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange takes place. 8. Lungs - The lungs' main function is to help oxygen from the air we breathe enter the red cells in the blood. Red blood cells then carry oxygen around the body to be used in the cells found in our body. The lungs also help the body to get rid of CO gas 2 when we breathe out. 9. Respiratory Muscles - The muscles of respiration are those muscles that contribute to inhalation and exhalation, by aiding in the expansion and contraction of the thoracic cavity.

Mechanics of Breathing The Main function of the Respiratory System is ❖ Supply the blood with oxygen ❖ Oxygen is stored in the lungs (located on each side of the chest) ❖ Blood delivers the oxygen to all parts of the body. ❖ Respiratory system does this through breathing. ❖ We inhale Oxygen when we breath ❖ Exhale Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Lung Health Important Facts about respiratory infections in children: 1. They are very common, particularly in children in daycare or school or in children with siblings. 2. Having six respiratory infections per year is normal. 3. Some uncomplicated respiratory infections can last up to two weeks.

Asthma Asthma (say Az-muh) is a condition that affects the lungs and causes them to tighten and go into spasm making breathing difficult. Inside the lungs are airways called breathing tubes or bronchial (say: BRONG-kee-ul) tubes. With asthma, some of the smallest tubes can swell and narrow, making it harder for air to get through.

Asthma Triggers Do you know the causes for Asthma flare up? POLLEN MOLD Oh No! I better stay away from these DANDER

Food for Lungs Foods that help strengthen the respiratory system: ❖ Fruits and vegetables that are rich in Vitamin C (Oranges, Papaya, strawberries, Kiwi, cabbage, bell peppers, leafy greens) Just breathe. Fortunately grapes are a natural medicine for the lungs and help heal them, allowing us to do just that, breathe. They bear a resemblance to the alveoli (tiny balloon-like sacs attached to the branches of the bronchial passages), of the lungs where oxygen exchange takes place.

Exercise and Lungs ● Exercise can help reduce the chance of an asthma attack. ● Activities such as indoor swimming, aerobic exercises, and yoga are good ways to exercise. ● You should aim to get as much exercise in every day.

Breathing Exercise (Pranayama) Pranayama is a good way to get good breathing exercise. It also helps your lungs too!
