SSIO International Medical Conference SSE Kit Wild Senses Reporter of the Day: Mrs. Sehetotasm

Wild Senses “The most effective discipline man can adopt is control of the senses. Avoid the errors and evils that the eye, the ear, the tongue, the mind, and the hand are prone to commit. Among the five senses, two are the most important: they are the eyes and the tongue. Because of their exceptional importance, the Lord has provided them with the means of restraining their activities. The Lord points out: 'You silly man! Take note that I have provided natural means for closing the eyes and the mouth.' If you do not want to see anything undesirable, you can close your eyes with the eyelids. The ears and nose have no such devices for closing them. The mouth has lips which can seal the tongue. Therefore, observe restraint in speech and control the tongue.” - SSS, 1987

Wild Senses See Taste Mr. Brian the Brain! Smell Touch Hear

Wild Senses Your five senses Humans and animals both have many sensations. These different sensations are called the 5 senses. In your body, there is an important part called the nervous system. The nervous system has different organs which are connected and dedicated to each sense. The senses provide data for recognition. The senses can be divided into two groups which are exteroceptive and interoceptive. The five senses are smell, see, hear, touch, and taste.

Wild Senses- See When you use the sense of seeing, you catch sight of something or someone. If you look very closely at your eye, it either has black, brown, green, or blue as it’s color. I think identifying if your eye is black or brown is really difficult. Here are some words from the eye! “When you are looking at an object, I am the one who helps you catch sight of something or someone. I am made of two receptor cells. The cones and the rods. The cones take the light and help you see in full color. The rods take over in the dark and make you see only black and white. Sometimes, I look pink on your face. That is called a pink eye. If you get that, you just have to put a few eye drops and I will feel better. Your eye heals very quickly. If I am severely sick, you need to immediately consult an ophthalmologist.”

Wild Senses- Hearing Hearing is when you have the ability to detect vibrations. Some sounds can be loud, like a huge dinosaur! Some sounds can also be quiet, like wind chimes. Mr. Ear, do you have any thoughts? “Yes I do. I wanted to expand on the facts about our ears. If your ear hurts, you should immediately go to an otolaryngologist, which is an ear doctor. Did you know that you inner ear is no larger than a pencil eraser? The inner ear contains the sensory organs for hearing and balance. So without me, you would not hear anything that anyone is saying, which I think would be pretty scary. Thank you for letting me talk!” Thank you Mr. Ear! Hope you enjoyed his speech! He loves to talk about our ears! Here are some fun facts about the ear: 1. The inner ear is no larger than a pencil eraser in boundary. 2. Your ears never stop hearing, even when you sleep. 3. Your brain can sometimes ignore incoming sounds. 4. Your ears are more than just necessary for hearing, they also help you keep your balance.

Wild Senses- Touch When you touch, you be in contact with an object. For example, if you touch a pineapple, you have contact with the pineapple. You can think about it this way. If you have contacts of someone on your phone, then you are in touch, or you know them and have them on your phone! That is an easy way to remember what the definition of touch is. I also have 4 other friends, the skin, tongue, ear, and the eyes. Here is another story from the skin! “When you feel an object, you notice that it has different textures. A texture is the feel or appearance of an object. Some kinds of textures that you might feel when you use me is spiky, sharp, smooth, rough, thorny, sticky, soft, fuzzy, and slick. I am an important part of your body. You might be thinking, “Actually, the brain is the most important part of the body.” But if you didn’t have me, you couldn’t feel anything, write, or open any object. Oh my god, thinking about that is making me scared! I admit that the brain is very important, but I am also an important part that helps the brain.” Now did you understand? Touching can be a really important sense!

Wild Senses- Taste Tastes of foods can be sweet, salty, sour, and many more! For example if you ever tasted a strawberry, it would taste really sweet and yummy! Did you know that the tongue is the strongest muscle in your body? The tongue knows all about it, so she will expand on this amazing topic. “I help you taste all of your favorite foods! I have taste buds all over me which are called papillae. I can have 4 different tastes : Sweet, Sour, Bitter, and Salty. Which taste is your favorite? I also help you to speak! When you talk, you touch your tongue on the top row of your teeth. Try saying “Thirty - three thirsty thieves” But here’s the tricky part. You cannot touch the top row of your teeth! Now do you understand that life is so hard without me?” The tongue is an important part of our body. It helps us with eating, and talking!

Wild Senses- Smell When you smell something, you get a little sniff of something or someone. Did you know that one person can detect 1 million scents a day? There are different kinds of scents. An animal called a skunk has a unique kind of smell that no other animal has. Can you guess what it is? Here’s a hint: you may not find it very appealing to many people. The answer is that it has a very stinky smell you can ever think of! My friend, the nose has a story to tell you. “When I came to USA, the first animal that I saw was…..what was it again? Oh, right, it was a skunk. At first, I thought it was a really friendly animal and it smelled like roses. Then, when I went next to it and hugged it, it let out a very nasty smell. If you didn’t have me in your body, you cannot smell any good scent. Or bad scent.” So that is the story of my most best friend! She has 2 nostrils that help you to breathe! There are so many good scents to choose from, unlike the skunk in nose’s story!

Wild Senses- Healthy Habits Some healthy habits that we can follow to tame our wild senses! 2. Never watch very violent shows. 3. Balance your meals. Have a 1. Sit in silence for 5 minutes everyday before going to bed! Watching violent shows can affect mix of different kind of nutrients. Remember, you become what your senses.Limit screen time! you eat! Do not eat while watching TV! Swami refers to TV as Tele Visham. Visham means poison!
