ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS g{x fàâwxÇàá ]ÉâÜÇtÄ Π. Multiple ways to teach one structure!

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS g{x fàâwxÇàá ]ÉâÜÇtÄ Π.

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS g{x fàâwxÇàá ]ÉâÜÇtÄ Π.

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS g{x fàâwxÇàá ]ÉâÜÇtÄ Π.

ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS g{x fàâwxÇàá ]ÉâÜÇtÄ Π.

Children don’t go to school and businesses close for four days. It is a special day for families, and people travel great distances just to be with their families for this occasion. Families get together for a feast or a large meal. They eat roast turkey with cranberry sauce, potatoes and pumpkin pie. Many organisations also prepare a free meal for poor people in their towns or cities. Thanksgiving became a national holiday because of a woman named Sarah Hale. For forty years Sarah Hale wrote to each president and asked for a holiday of Thanksgiving. At last she was successful. In 1863 President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a holiday. In 1620 the Pilgrims made a difficult trip across the ocean from England. They landed in what is now Massachusetts. In England the Pilgrims had not been allowed to freely practice their religion. So they went to the New World in search of religious freedom. The Pilgrims first winter was very hard. Almost half of the group died of cold, hunger and disease. But the Native Americans of Massachusetts taught the Pilgrims to plant corn, to hunt and to fish. When the next fall came, the Pilgrims had plenty of food. They were thankful and had a feast to give thanks. They invited the Native Americans to join them. This was the first Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day is a harvest celebration. Traditionally, it was a time to give thanks for a big harvest. It is also a holiday to express appreciation to family and friends. This is why it is celebrated with a big family feast. It is a time when families come together and eat a lot of food. It is a day of gratitude and appreciation. Everybody talks about what they are thankful for. Many are thankful for family, friends good food and the good things in their lives. What are you thank- ful for? Supervising Teacher: Vovoura Evi

ΛΟΥΚΙΔΟΥ—ΜΠΟΥΡΝΤΑ Page 29 Famous Artist: Caravaggio Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi (Michele Angelo Merigi or Amerighi) da Caravaggio (29 September 1571 – 18 July 1610) was an Italian painter active in Rome, Naples, Malta, and Sicily from the early 1590s to 1610. His paint- ings combine a realistic observation of the human state, both physical and emotional, with a dra- matic use of lighting, which had a formative influ- ence on Baroque painting Biography Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi or Amerighi) was born in Milan, where his father, Fermo (Fermo Merixio), was a household administrator and ar- chitect-decorator to the Marchese of Caravaggio, a town not far from the city of Bergamo. In 1576 the family moved to Caravaggio (Caravaggius) to es- cape a plague that ravaged Milan, and Caravag- gio's father and grandfather both died there on the same day in 1577.It is assumed that the artist grew up in Caravaggio, but his family kept up connections with the Sforzas and with the powerful Colonna family, who were allied by marriage with the Sforzas and destined to play a major role later in Caravaggio's life. Death Caravaggio had a fever at the time of his death, and what killed him has been a mat- ter of historical debate and study. Traditionally historians have long thought he died of syphilis. Some have said he had malaria, or possibly brucellosis from unpasteurised dairy. His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in August, 1931, and is one of the most recognisable Surrealist paintings. Dalí's expansive artistic repertoire included film, sculpture, and photography, at times in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media. ΛΟΥΚΙΔΟΥ—ΜΠΟΥΡΝΤΑ Page 35 Famous Artist: Michelangelo Michelangelo, an Italian sculptor, painter, tect and poet of the High Renasance was born in 1475 in Caprese, Tuscany. A number of Michelangelo's works of painting, sculpture and architecture rank among the most famous in existence.Mention Michelangelo and one work that instantly comes to mind is the artist’s stunning fresco painted on the ceiling of the Vatican City’s Sistine Chapel. Commissioned by Pope Julius II and created between 1508 and 1512, the work – which depicts nine stories from the Book of Genesis – is considered one of the greatest works of the High Ren- aissance. Michelangelo himself was apparently reluc- tant to take on the project, as he saw himself as a more accomplished sculptor than painter, but the work nevertheless continues to enthrall today with around five million people flocking to the Sistine Chapel every year to see his masterpiece. The work done by Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel ceiling is a cornerstone of Renaissance art and The Creation of Adam is the most famous fresco panel of the masterpiece. The popularity of the painting is second only to Mona Lisa; and along with The Last Supper of Da Vinci, it is the most replicated religious painting of all time. The image of the near-touching hands of God and Adam has become iconic of humanity and has been imitated and parodied innumerable times. During the early 1500s, Michelangelo was commissioned by Angelo Doni to paint a “Holy Family” as a present for his wife, Maddalena Strozzi . Michel- angelo used the form of a tondo, or round frame, for the painting . Doni Tondo features the Christian Holy family (the child Jesus, Mary, and Saint Joseph) along with John the Baptist in the foreground and contains five am- biguous nude male figures in the background. It is the only finished panel painting by the mature Michelangelo to survive. In 1524, Michelangelo was commissioned by the Medici pope to design the li- brary for the San Lorenzo’s Church in Florence, Italy. Michelangelo designed both the interior of the library itself and its vestibule. He pioneered the Man- nerist style in his design of the library which became renowned for its archi- tecture.
