ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΞΕΝΩΝ ΓΛΩΣΣΩΝ NEW SUCCESS The Students Journal Π. ΛΟΥΚΙΔΟΥ—ΜΠΟΥΡΝΤΑ Page 16 Traditional jobs Ice cutting is a winter task of collecting surface ice from lakes and rivers for storage in ice houses and use or sale as a cooling method. Rare today, it was common before the era of widespread mechanical refrigeration and air con- ditioning technology. The work was done as a winter chore by many farmers and as a winter occupation by icemen. Kept insulated, the ice was preserved for cold food storage during warm weather, either on the farm or for delivery to residential and commercial customers with ice boxes. A large ice trade existed in the 19th and early 20th centuries, until mechani- cal refrigeration displaced it. Ice harvesting generally involved waiting until approximately a foot of ice had built up on the water surface in the winter. The ice would then be cut with either a handsaw or a powered saw blade into long continuous strips and then cut into large individual blocks for transport by wagon back to the ice house. Dangerous jobs A logging worker is someone who cuts down, processes and transports mature trees for logging purposes. They harvest thousands of acres of forests each year. The timber they harvest provides raw material for countless con- sumer and industrial products. A typical crew might consist of: one or two tree fallers or one logging equipment operator with a tree harvester to cut down trees, one bucker to cut logs, two logging equipment operators with tractors to drag cut trees to the loading deck, and one logging equipment operator to load the logs onto trucks. Theodoridou Stellina Traditional jobs Although some cinemas still show movies with a reel, in most cases digital movie projection is used. Movie view- ing is now largely automatic, and an employee can control all the rooms in a multiplex, rather than having a movie viewing engineer for each viewing. This means that there are far fewer such jobs, and the position now involves pushing buttons rather than changing reels Dangerous jobs Despite the security measures, export is an extremely dangerous process. There are very few poison exporters who have not been bitten by snakes. Exporters of snake venom spend their day pushing snake heads into a plastic container to get their venom, which is useful in medicine and the production of antibiotics. Mpakiras Dimitris Dangerous jobs Logging is physically demanding and can be hazardous. Workers spend all their time outdoors, sometimes in poor weather and often in isolated areas. They commute long distances between their homes and logging sites. Most logging work involves lifting, climbing and other strenuous activities although machinery has eliminated some heavy labour. Falling branches, vines and rough terrain are constant hazards as are dangers associated with falling trees and handling logs. Vlachoudis Giannis Supervising Teacher: Panagou Lilia Class: Pre-lower 2

Now, we just use buttons, to move from a floor to another, but in the past they used to have a person to control the speed of the elevator and when it would stop moving. Also, they used to welcome the passengers and there were others on each floor to help them get out of the elevator. Today, in some countries elevator operators are still in business, but only to welcome the passengers and help them with their luggage. Dangerous jobs Can a job include electrical repair work and flying with a helicopter? The answer is yes, the helicopter linemen . Some countries have locations that they can only be accessed by a helicopter. High-skilled linemen and pilots have to check if the power lines are working fine, while they are flying. The linemen can easily drop their tools by accident. This makes the job even more difficult, if they don’t have other same tools with the ones that fell. Also, the pilots have to stay in a place and not make lots of moves, to help linemen fix the power lines. Dervisi Ioanna Traditional jobs That used to be a real job before the use of the regrigerator. When lakes getting frozen during the winter time men used to cut the ice from frozen lakes. After that the ice delivery men will transfer this ice to other places. People used ice to keep the food fresh during summer. It was a dangerous job in extreme conditions. Ice cut- ters might easily fall into the frozen lake and lose their lives. Dangerous jobs Bodyguards work in dangerous situations because they protect a given person or group from those situations. It’s common for bodyguards to have to put themselves in harm’s way. They must be able to react to situations quickly and respond to potential emergencies. It’s not easy and it’s definitely a stressful job. Fatal accidents rarely happen but there stand chances for them to take place.High speed is a factor that makes Formula 1 dangerous. Formula 1 cars’ average speed is 350 km/h. Someone’s opinion stops where the opinion of someone else begins. We must let people be who they want to be. The second thing is racism. We are all the same and we must have equal rights. Our skin colour, our religion etc. doesn’t matter. We must all be equal. The last thing I would change is war. It doesn’t make anything better, in comparison it makes everything worse. A lot of people are killed because of wars, especially in Syria. This must stop, we are all human and we must solve our problems with dialogue. Karanastasi Vasiliki The three things I would change are: The first thing is to stop animal testing for cosmetics because we torture animals and many animals die every day because of these conditions and that is why we have to make cosmetics that are not tested on animals. The second thing is to stop racism because every person has the right to go to another country or go to school without experiencing prejudice because of their nationality since we are all the same. The last thing is homophobia because every person has the right to be what he or she wants and to love who they want. I would stop homophobic people from making offensive comments to them. If their point of view is this then they should keep it to themselves and not tell it to others. Zachari Athnasia If I could change 3 things in the world they would be violence because people don’t respect each other and hurt each other. The second is racism because it is not right to yell at people because they are black or people from other religions. And the third thing is health. I wish I could make all everyone healthy and also could change school because it is boring. Kourouklidou Eleni Supervising Teacher: Triantafyllou Ioanna Class: Pre-lower 3

Stir in the guar gum until it is an even consistency. This is an important step: guar gum mixes really well with oil, but not so much with water, so if you mix everything together at once, you’ll end up with a mess. Mix the water, castile soap and essential oils together. Add in the guar gum and continue stirring. After a minute or so, you should notice the mixture thicken considerably into a gel. Santos Kyrimis Vaios Decorative pinecones As Christmas has arrived, decorating the tree is the main tradition and requires a variety of gorgeous or- naments. Before buying them at a store, someone can craft a few by painting pinecones. More specifi- cally, utilizing acrylic colors and then adding gold dust on them is the process of making some adorn- ments. These pinecones can also be used on tables as decorations. The house will have the Christmas spirit accompanied by the beauty of nature. Geromanolis Dimitris DIY purse Locate the point on the basketball where you want your purse to open. Use a knife to cut through the bas- ketball, making an opening the same size as your zipper. Apply glue to the edges of your cut and attach your zipper to the glue. Work a little at a time so the glue doesn’t dry before the zipper has been placed on it. Cut off two pieces of snap tape. These will hold the strap on your purse. Glue the two pieces of snap tape to your purse at each end of the zipper, about 2 inches in from the end. Attach your chain strap to the snap tape, securing the chain strap in. Kongolidou Christina Sock snowman Fill in the sock with rice, using a funnel. Use a rubber band or yarn to tie the sock. Divide the rice-filled sec- tion of the sock almost in half. You will want the section closest to the top to be a bit smaller. This will be the snowman’s head. Tie a piece of yarn tightly around the sock where you divided into two sections. Roll or fold down the top, empty half of the sock so it looks like a hat. Decorate your snowman however you want using a hot glue gun. Menelaou Georgia DIY mirror Use shells, sports memorabilia, or beads to make a fun locker mirror. Head to a craft store and find small bits and pieces that capture your interests or imagination. Arrange everything that you want to include on the mirror first. Try to stick to decorating the edges of the mirror rather than the center. Then apply a small blob of glue to the back of each item and wait until it dries before hanging it up in the locker. Stepanian Daniil Supervising Teacher: Chasiotis Paschalis Class: Proficiency 1
