DAHS NEWSLETTER IRONMEN • JUNE 2023 •   NEWS FROM DAHS DANVILLE AREA HIGH SCHOOL MR. VARHOLAK NEWSLETTER Congratulations on another outstanding school year! I just wanted to TABLE OF thank all parents, students, and staff for making 2022-2023 a great school CONTENTS year. A N A T O M Y / P H Y S I O L O G Y G U E S T T E A C H E R Students in Ms. Crane’s anatomy / physiology spring semester class learned about the heart from our guest teacher Dr. Sandy Green. Students were able to explore a cow’s heart, explain the basics of an EKG, and learn about medical procedures that are performs on the heart when arteries are blocked. NATIONAL SPANISH EXAM 150 Danville High School students were among 85,000 nationwide to take the National Spanish Exam. Danville HS had the highest number of Gold and Silver medals in the state compared to much larger districts and many private academies. Danville High School students have participated in this prestigious exam since 1977. Congratulations to the Gold Medalists for placing in the top 5% of the nation. 2ND GRADE SWIM LESSONS I just got this photo from Danielle Sticklin. Ava loves helping with second grade swim lessons. Thank you for giving her this opportunity. Hopefully more high school swimmers can help in the future! PA MEDIA & DESIGN COMPETITION On Tuesday, four Danville High School students competed at the Pennsylvania state media and design competition - Senior Ella Hummel in Digital Moviemaking, Sophomore Hanson Zhang in programming, Sophomore Abril Xu in webpage design, and Sophomore Emma Wilson in 3d Design. Xu won third place in the state for her webpage entitled Danville Heritage Irish Dance Company! Congratulations to all who participated. Photo and caption credit: Paul Breon

WALLOPS ISLAND Students in AP science classes had the opportunity to study coastal ecology at the Chincoteague Bay Field station in Wallops Island VA. Some activities included chemical analysis of water, identification of macro/microorganisms and learning about the importance of salt marshes, barrier islands and maritime forests. Hands on, feet wet learning! GLAMOURGALS SPM EVENT Senior Sarah Bhanushali has received a $1000 The Danville Moose held a BINGO Scholarship from GlamourGals National Service Club in NYC. Bhanushali earned the scholarship for her for SPM on May 21. The BINGO leadership role in launching the new service club in Danville in November. The club makes monthly visits to raised $3,400.00 for our club to provide companionship and friendship to senior citizens in nursing homes. Bhanushali was excited to receive her continue promoting mental scholarship: “It is very inspiring to receive such an award, I had to write three essays and was nominated health awareness in our out of 20 finalists.” Caption credit: Jonny Dunkle community. FORGE ON FESTIVAL It was awesome to see the community come together for our high school students.

RODEO NATIONALS Congratulations to both Kloe and Brook McCormick On qualifying for Nationals in High School Rodeo for the 2022-2023 season! Kloe is graduating this year at Danville and is now a two time qualifier in Barrels for Nationals along with her horse Tequila. She has been not only competing in Rodeo, but also training her own OTTBs (Off the Track Thoroughbreds) for her events. She plans to attend Arizona State for pre Vet next year. The NHRA also Awarded her with two Scholarships at the year end banquet in May. Brook is finishing her 10th grade year here as well, and is a first time Qualifier in Barrels on her horse Hemi. They also placed 7th in Poles. She plans to continue competing in High School Rodeo till she graduates. Please wish the girls and their families well on their trip out to Gillette Wyoming in July! FACULTY VS. STUDENT On Thursday May 18th, students and teachers teamed up for a game of Lacrosse! Photo credit: Peyton Poticher SPRING SPORTS Congratulations to all our spring sports programs! Baseball, Softball, Tennis, and Track and Field closed up their seasons over the past few weeks. Our highly decorated Track and Field program had a great end to the season, winning the PIAA, AA Boys Team State Championship Title. Both our girls and boys Lacrosse teams won the district title championship game. Both are heading off to their respective state title matchups! Congratulations and good luck to all our spring sports teams!

Danville Area High School UPCOMING EVENTS JUNE 8 Grades are DUE JUNE 9 JUNE 9 All student grades are due by 12:00 on Thursday, unless otherwise directed by instructor. JUNE 13-15 Last Day of School JUNE - AUG. The 9th is the last official day of school. Students will also be receiveing their schedules for the 23-24 school year. Graduation Graduation rehearsal will be at 10:00, luncheon at 11:00, cap/gown photo at 12:00, and ceremony will be at 7:00pm. FFA Activities FFA Activities Week at PSU Scheduling Questions / Concerns Students will have the ability to meet with administration / guidance to make any adjustments to their schedule. This will be by appointment. AUGUST First Day of School - 23/24 School Year 24 This is a Thursday, mid-week start to the school year.
