Modified Guidelines for SCM Staff Trainings During COVID-19 Pandemic The Covid-19 pandemic presents human service providers and educators with extraordinary circumstances. The delivery of routine service is clearly more complicated, and the task of actual crisis behavior intervention presents substantial difficulty. To assist during this time, JKM Training, Inc. has temporarily modified SCM Staff training guidelines and is allowing for non-physical contact training options. We have also developed a guidance document for SCM Instructors to assist with non-physical contact assessment of staff’s physical skills. We anticipate all guidance will evolve as more information on the pandemic and its impact is realized. JKM Training will continue to support organizations/schools, SCM Instructors and staff who correctly implement Safe Crisis Management. If you are in an area without restrictions and your staff are comfortable with hands on training, please proceed as normal. If you decide to continue with your SCM Staff Trainings during this time period, we suggest you follow the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for preventing the spread of COVID-19 Disease. We are also offering the following modified training guidelines. Modified Training Guidelines for SCM Staff Certification Requirements: • SCM Theory Training & Test • ESPI Training & Skill Out (if using ESPIs) SCM Theory Online/Virtual Training Options: • Option 1: SCM Instructors can do the SCM Theory Certification review and Theory test live (in real time) with staff via an online meeting/conferencing platform (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.) • Option 2: Staff can complete the SCM Staff Certification Theory training requirement and Theory test via JKM Training’s online course. SCM ESPI Virtual Training Options: (If using ESPIs) • SCM Instructors can conduct ESPI training and demonstration live (in real time) via an online meeting/conferencing platform (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.). SCM Instructors are also permitted to show the JKM Training ESPI instructional/demonstration videos during the live training session. Instructors would access the videos via the Instructor Resource Library and share their computer screen, so staff can view the video clips. SCM ESPI Skill Out (required if using ESPIs) Instructors must be sure staff understand they are not permitted to use SCM ESPIs until they have successfully completed an in-person/hands on ESPI skill out. When permitted to conduct this ESPI training/skill out and if training time is an issue, please remember you are only required to train staff in (3) three standing assists to demonstrate a least restrictive alternative principle. This may be helpful until more in-person training time becomes available. Training and demonstration may be done virtually, but skill out for certification should be done in person. JKM Training, Inc.
Modified Training Guidelines for SCM Staff Recertification Timeframes: • The Staff Recertification training timeframe has been extended to up to 18 months from last SCM Staff Certification or Recertification training date. • Although this temporarily extended timeframe allows an additional 6 months to recertify staff, every effort should be made to recertify staff within (or as close as possible) 12 months of their last training date. • If it has been more than 18 months since staff were last trained, we recommend they successfully complete SCM Staff Certification training before being approved to use Safe Crisis Management. Requirements: • SCM Theory Review & Test • ESPI Skill Out (if using ESPIs) Note: The ESPIs review & practice hours requirement has been temporarily suspended for staff recertification. The modified guideline for the ESPIs part of staff recertification requires only that staff pass an ESPIs skills assessment by demonstrating competency in the implementation of ESPI techniques. SCM Theory Online/Virtual Training Options: • Option 1: SCM Instructors can do the SCM Theory Recertification review and Theory test live (in real time) with staff via an online meeting/conferencing platform (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.) • Option 2: Staff can complete the SCM Staff Recertification Theory training requirement and Theory test via JKM Training’s online course. SCM ESPI Virtual Training Options: (If using ESPIs) Although the ESPI review/practice hours requirement is temporarily suspended for Staff Recertification, we suggest SCM Instructors review ESPIs with their staff, virtually or in-person (if permitted), prior to staff ESPI skills assessment. Virtual ESPI review options: • SCM Instructors can conduct ESPI training and demonstration live (in real time) via an online meeting/conferencing platform (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.). SCM Instructors are also permitted to show the JKM Training ESPI instructional/demonstration videos during the live training session. Instructor would access the videos via the Instructor Resource Library and share their computer screen, so staff can view the video clips. SCM ESPI Skill Out (required if using ESPIs) • Option 1: SCM Instructors can do an assessment of a staff person’s physical skills live (in real time) via an online meeting/conferencing platform (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.). Staff would demonstrate the ESPIs as if there was a person present. • Option 2: SCM Instructors can assess staff’s physical skills at an in-person training that follows the CDC guidelines regarding social distancing and federal, state and/or local regulations. Staff would not have physical contact with others; they would demonstrate the ESPIs as if there was a person present. JKM Training, Inc.
Notes If an organization/school permits physical contact training and staff are comfortable, demonstration of ESPIs on another person is the preferred method of ESPIs training, review, and assessment of staff. This applies to both SCM Staff Certification and Recertification Trainings. In all cases, please comply with any federal, state and/or local superseding regulations.
