The Potentate’s Perspective Medinah Shriners “The Fraternal Entertainment Zone” Fall is here! Nobles and Ladies, What happened to Summer? How quickly it went by. Time flies when you are having Fun and Helping Kids. Debbie Jo and I attended many club & unit events this summer: the Music OV on July 14, we golfed at the Al Daily outing on July 20, the Genie OV on July 27, the Clown Patio Party on August 3, Northwest Suburban Shrine Club brunch on August 4, DuPage / West Suburban Shrine Club OV on August 10, Greeters Party on August 11, Hospitality Barbeque on August 14, and the Aurora OV on August 24. A great time was had at all of them! The Family Picnic was on August 18 and the day started with lots of rain but quickly turned into a beautiful day. Catering cooked a great barbeque for us, the band “Hip Pocket” had lots of people dancing and everyone enjoyed a fabulous sunny day in our back yard at Medinah. There were games and fun for everyone. A big thanks to Don and Suzanne Shaffer for running the picnic for the second year in a row. Great job! For our final local Medinah parade of the year on August 25th, we were at home in Addison. Mother nature blessed us with another beautiful day. Thanks to everyone who paraded and cheered us on. Our Sportsman’s Raffle was on September 14th. Rick Miller did a fantastic job as our event coordinator and everything was perfect! Thanks Rick!! Again, we were blessed with flawless weather! We had a surprise visit by our Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder and his Lady Cheryl along with the Imperial Assistant Rabban Bill Baily and his Lady Debbie. continued on the next page…. Fall 2019 3

We also had several special guests that day: Rich Galgano and his family were in attendance and were presented with a football trophy in recognition of their generosity. Rich Galgano is a very generous supporter of Medinah who also funded the Chicago 6 Band with Dan Hampton and Steve McMichael from the Super Bowl winning Bears who signed autographs and took pictures prior to playing to a packed house in the ballroom. A big thanks goes to Phil Smith for coordinating the donations, presentations, and entertainment All hands were on deck and everything went as planned. Thanks to everyone who bought and sold tickets. We just returned from Grove City Ohio from the annual Great Lakes Shrine Association conven- tion. Medinah was well represented as we literally took over the Hampton Inn. The Aides made sure everyone always had something to eat and drink! They put out a spread that would make any host or hostess proud, I know I was. The comradery was evident all weekend! The Highlanders, the Motor Corps and the 57 Chevys had the largest presence this year. Medinah Shrine Hospital Patient Transportation Fund The Medinah Shriners, as a member of Shriners International, help operate a network of specialty pediatric hospitals throughout North America which provide orthopedic, spine, cleft palette, and burn care to children, regardless of the family's ability to pay. The Chicago location of Shriners Hospitals for Children is one of the system's flagship locations. In addition to the leading edge medical care provided, there are often substantial out of pocket costs required to transport the children and supporting family members from their residences throughout the region to the Chicago hospital and provide lodging and meals while receiving care. Some cases may also require travel to another facili- ty, such as Cincinnati, for burn care. The Medinah Shrine Hospital Patient Transportation Fund is a charitable fund specifically established at the local level to help supplement and ease the burdens of these typically non-reimbursable expenses which some families could not otherwise afford. Below is the 3rd quarter 2019 summary of the income and expenses of the Medinah Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund: Description Amount Airfare - Commercial $1,167 Meal Tickets $2,264 Cab Fare & Transport Expenses $3,189 Wheelchair Transport $ 891 Housing & Lodging $ 15 Self-Transport Cost $ 161 Total Expenses $7,689 Contributions to the Medinah Hospital Transportation Fund WSSC in Memory of Nancy Papadogianis Country Shrine Club DuPage Shrine Club Ladies Fashion Show Medinah Athletic Committee – 2019 Al Daily Medinah Legion of Honor Club Chuck Greaning Northwest Suburban Shrine Club Medinah Hospitality Committee Medinah Shrine Clown Unit Aurora Area Shrine Club Medinah Flying Carpets Rupert & Patricia Solis WSSC in Memory of Coleen Lyman Memorial Golf Outing Benefitting Chicago SHC Anonymous Total Contributions $20,710 8 Medinah Shriner

East-West Shrine football announces name change The nation’s longest-running college football all-star game announced a name change today: The 2020 game will be known as the East-West Shrine Bowl™ when it is played on January 18 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Formerly called the East-West Shrine Game, the event has been played since 1925 to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children and its mission to provide advanced care for children with specialized medical needs. Among the hundreds of notable college all-stars who have played in the East-West Shrine Bowl and gone on to illustrious NFL careers are Tom Brady, Walter Payton, Brett Favre, Gale Sayers, John Elway, Dick Butkus, Roger Staubach, Mike Ditka, Mark Brunell, Troy Vincent and Willie McGinest. In any given season, approximately 300 East-West Shrine Bowl alumni are on NFL rosters, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame has inducted 77 former players from the game. “As our flagship sporting event that has supported Shriners Hospitals for Children for nearly 100 years, we are proud to announce the name change to East-West Shrine Bowl going forward,” said Jeffrey L. Sowder, chairman of the board of directors of Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Through efforts like this event and others, we have been able to treat and help more than 1.4 million children since 1922, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.” The week’s festivities, which culminate in the players’ visit to Shriners Healthcare for Children — Florida, allow the top college senior football players the opportunity to showcase their talent to NFL scouts and a national television audience on the NFL Network. Just One...and Introducin During his Imperial Session pageant, Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder announced his new membership program, JUST ONE. As described, if every current Shriner recruits JUST ONE new member, or serves as the top line signer for a restoration, our membership would double. In fact, if every active Shriner brings in JUST ONE through these means, we would be well above our organizational average over the past several years. Involving Every Noble Every One Matters New referral postcards have been Imperial Sir Sowder served in many Masonic designed to aid in the membership process leadership positions in Kansas, and during that by providing an easy way for nobles to time, he successfully led a fundraising effort to collect prospect information, which, after raise $15 million in 4 years for cancer research submission, can be directly linked to the at Kansas University, allowing the school to be noble making the referral. Temples may designated as a National Cancer Institute request these postcards by sending an under the name Kansas Masonic Research email to [email protected]. Institute. When collected, the prospect information When Sowder was working on that fundraising should be uploaded to the WebFez MDS driver, he became aware of the power of one - for status tracking and documentation. the difference one person can make. That Imperial Sowder asks that each temple lesson of JUST ONE has become an integral strive to improve their metrics by JUST part of his life & leadership style. He has used ONE percent across the board. The goal is it to inspire his fellow nobles to, one by one, to have every temple increase the number increase membership, and he will use it of creations, affiliations, and restorations by throughout his year as Imperial Potentate to 1% and to decrease the number of demits remind us all that each one of us matters, has and suspensions by 1%. a responsibility to our fraternity & philanthropy, and can make a difference. Multiply that one by every noble - & it becomes significant. Sowder expects the power of JUST ONE reflected in the efforts of the nobles & the membership numbers, both are extremely important to the future of the fraternity - and the philanthropy! 24 Medinah Shriner

News of Units, Committees, & SC’s BLACK HORSE TROOP Parade season is winding down for MBHT. After Sunday the 6th of October in Franklin, Park our only remaining parade is Thanksgiving weekend in Westmont. A few of us traveled to Nashville for the Imperial. We took in the Motor Corps and Clown competitions and enjoyed watching others compete. This is the first year, in I can’t really remember how long, that we did not travel to Great Lakes. It would have been a long ride for the horses, and the rest of us as well. We felt that putting the horses through a long trip like that probably was not in their best interest. We heard we missed a great time. Our only competition, as it has been for several years now, would have been Mizpah. We know that they were disappointed but we felt it was the best decision for us. Who knows what next year holds. In early September we said so long for now to Commander Emeritus John Novak and his Lady Janette. They have been snow birds for several years in Wickenburg, Arizona. They put their house in Villa Park on the market when they returned this spring never thinking it would sell quickly. Surprise! John was very active in the horse troop even though he hasn’t had his own horse for a while. He rode Lady Lock and Turbo and they were at most every parade and Shrine function with us. Their support of the Troop has never faltered. We will miss them but wish them well in their new full-time adventure in Wickenburg. We are pretty sure they will be kept pretty busy unpacking the 4 truck loads of boxes and things John and his son Jonathan took out there. We hope John and Janette will be back to visit us often. John, you know we will always find a horse for you. If you would like to join the fun, you are welcome at any time to visit the Medinah stable locat- ed at 24W280 E. St. Charles Road in Carol Stream. We ride every Monday night at 7:30pm. Come out and see what the horse troop is all about. There are many things other than actually riding a horse that you can become involved with. Call Bob @ 847.754.1056 or just stop by. Happy Harvest everyone! CLOWNS The summer has been very busy for the Medinah clowns. We’ve marched in more than twenty parades this year. This is the result of the efforts of the clown’s newest member and Appearance Coordinator, Del “Dilly” Detweiler and his Lady Tammy “Cutsie”. 26 Medinah Shriner

CLOWNS (continued) Other activities by the members of the Medinah Clown Unit include hosting the International Shrine Clown Association (ISCA) Mid-Winter Convention. Clowns from all over Shrinedom came to the Medinah Shrine Center and enjoyed the hospitality and fellowship. The high points of the weekend included: * Installation of ISCA officers * John “Jay Jay” Joseph installed as ISCA President. * A collection of donations for Troop Support Care Packages. * A Sneaker Walk to collect donations for burn treatment and research. * An auction of limited-edition figurines, donated by the artist’s family. All proceeds were also donated to the Sneaker Fund. Congratulations are also in order for Erick “Giggles” Coners on his election as 1st Vice President of the Great Lakes Shrine Clown Unit Association. As part of its Official Visit by Illustrious Sir Bill Kissane, the Medinah Clowns put on a skit show. Its been a while since the unit has had an opportunity to perform and believe me, it was as much fun preparing as it was to watch. Remember when life hands you “Avocados” make “Guacamole!” Illustrious Kissane made two presentations; he named Rupert “Cy-Lo” Solis as Director Emeritus. But, the biggest surprise was the appointment of Erick “Giggles” Coners as the new Medinah Clown Unit Director. Congratulations Giggles and Good Luck...it’s your circus now! The members of the Medinah Clown Unit are a close family. Our Ladies also stand out. Tammy “Cutsie” Detwieler was elected High Priestess of her chapter of Ladies of the Oriental Shrine. Congratulations on your election and elevation. Paula “Stickers” Biggio was highlighted by having her likeness as the face of Clown Camp 2019 in La Crosse, WI. Among Paula’s many talents, she also participates in the various Powder Puff classifications at Shrine GLSCUA and ISCA conventions. Bob “Bingo” Fitch was awarded the GLSCUA Lifetime Achievement Award at Great Lakes Shrine Association session. Bingo mentored many of the current clowns of the Medinah Clown Unit. He also helped with makeup, costume, skits, pocket magic, and most of all to let your clown out and have fun. Congratulations Bingo, we all owe you a HUGE THANK YOU!! As you can see the members of the Medinah Clown Unit are busy Joeys. As we approach the close of the year we look forward to some well-deserved rest. HIGHLANDERS Highlander greetings to all, As for greetings, for those of you who've taken the Highlander degree, well 'nuff said about that. And if the opportunity arises to take it, it's a rip roaring good time. Just sayin'...……. As per usual we've been all over parading and leaving the echoes of pipes and drums behind, but of course, not leaving behind any empty containers :) Addison, Mendota, Hampshire, Streamwood, and back to the triple header Paradepalooza on the 4th of July among others. HIGHLANDERS (continued) Some of our members were in Aurora to support National Night Out and this was a night out for a particular Highlander's 50th birthday. \"Out\" being the common theme. The pictures below include Derek McDaniel and Bobby Stoops at the Chicago Fire game where they've helped fire up the home crowd at the beginning of the match all sea- son long. And while waiting at a train crossing in Mendota the window opens and this guy appears who might have been a long lost cousin of one of our senior snare stick slappers Fergie or Mic. Talk about timing! what we're up to. The final photo is Dougie, Jonathan, and Ian on a Wednesday night at the Shrine engaging in chanter practice. Yup, we're busting it hard to be ready to defend our GLSA pipe band trophy coming up. Feel free to stop by any Wednesday and see Also welcome to our newest member Ray Ali who's picking up on snare. You’ll be on the street soon, Noble! Fraternally reporting, John Ludwig Fall 2019 29

MOTOR CORPS The 2019 parade season is almost over, but the competitions continue. We visited Grove City, Ohio where the team competed at the Great Lakes Association of Shrine Motor Corps (GLASMC) . MMC had a terrific time this year at GLASMC and here are the results… 1st Place – Drill 1st Place – Inspection 1st Place – Team Slow Ride – Shaffer & Temesvary 1st Place – Team Obstacle – Edmeier & Temesvary 1st Place – Fastest Man – Temesvary 1st Place – Parade Trophy High Point Trophy Your 2019 GLASMC Competition Team (in riding order) Temesvary, Shaffer, Rivera, Wilson, Rupert, Edmeier, and Kurz. Congratulations to the team and ladies – you all did a GREAT JOB!! A special congratulations to Doug Edmeier and his Lady Jackie. Doug was initiated as a full member of the Medinah Motor Corps at GLASMC 2019. Doug recently joined Medinah this past January and is one of 3 members in Motor Corps history to become a full member, compete at competition and meet all his obligations before the end of his 1 year probation. Please make sure you congratulate them. Yes, he does smoke cigars…took some doing but we got him in the club. LOL. We made it home safe - no blow outs or issues with the rig. First time for everything! There were some shenanigans going on – to protect the guilty I will not mention their names, but will certainly share a few photos with you. continued on page 32…. 30 Medinah Shriner

MOTOR CORPS (continued) The team and ladies celebrated some big birthdays this past quarter… Bruce “BJ” James celebrated the big “70” and still acts and rides like a 40 year old – Bill Kurz and Dominic Rivera both celebrated their 60th birthday. MMC Halloween Party is early this year – October 5th, 2019. It was a Spooktacular success. Our Quartermaster (Jeff Gage) has worked hard in getting us out of our 70’s uniforms and into more comfortable and professional uniforms. Here is a picture of our new class “B” uniform...cigars and Panama Jack hats are optional. Medinah Motor Corps would like to thank Dominic Ri- vera, Jr. and his brothers of the Special Forces Unit for helping us out this past summer. As many of you know, this past July we broke down going to Nash- ville Competition and Dominic Jr. and his teammates rescued us. Within hours they provided us their truck and trailer and we were back on the road to Nashville to compete. It was real tough returning the vehicles back to them as he drives a real nice GMC Truck. I think Medinah needs to buy one or two…just saying. Illustrious Sir and Lady Debbie Jo – on behalf of the ladies and nobles of Medinah Motor Corps we would like to thank you for all you have done these past 2 years. Stepping up for a 2nd term was admirable of you and we all truly appreciate your sacrifices. I believe we have an open slot in the 2020 Parade & Competition Team. However, you will have to report to Master Sergeant Wilson for RE-TRAINING… HAHAHHA! And of course we will have to get membership to revote you back in...might take some bribery…Scotch and cigars come to mind. And on that note, hope you all enjoyed your summer and look forward in some fellowship at our next event. Patrick Temesvary Commander 32 Medinah Shriner

MARAUDERS CONGRATULATIONS to our Medinah Marauders on sailing into their first parade in August. Army Trail Road was their sea and they masterfully steered their way through the waters of Addison. What a fantastic addition to our parading units and clubs! PHOTOGRAPHY The Photography Club has been busy as of late. We were at the Sportsman’s Raffle for a meet-and-greet event where guests were able to meet Dan Hampton and Steve McMichael and receive an immediate photo for a keepsake. We also took photos of the event...it was a great time! There was also Medinah’s Annual Car Show where we braved the weather and snapped the usual photos of cars and pancakes. Our most recent outing was the Fall Ceremonial and although the number was a bit small there was a lot of enthusiasm and more great fun. We are in need a few Nobles to join our group with their cameras to become Medinah Photographers. The Photography Club meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm at Medinah. We hope you will join us! Great men wear a fez. Fall 2019 33

POLICE UNIT One of my proudest moments since Illustrious Sir William Kissane appointed me as Chief of Police was the attending the Sportsman’s Raffle. The Medinah Police Unit has a long tradition of serving Medinah and the Potentate. We have a membership of just over 50, with some now retired and living away from the Midwest. We had approximately 30 members in attendance including all the unit officers. It seemed that everywhere you looked there was a police unit officer providing security and assistance. We coordinated with the Addison Police Department and were supplied some of their radios for immediate assistance if needed. A big thank you to all members of the unit and to Mighty Medinah for a great event. The Police Unit meets on the first Monday of the month at 7:30pm at Medinah. New members are always welcome and you do not have to be a police officer, present or past, to join. USHERS Hi all – we’re back! The Ushers over the spring and early summer were very busy doing almost nothing because of the flu quarantine. Health officials have reported that the flu this past year was more severe than years past. The quarantine was finally lifted late May 2019. We did have several large groups – annual groups for which special permission was granted by the Hospital Administrator so that we could give an abbreviated tour. These groups were reported in the last issue of the Medinah Magazine. Included are some pictures of these groups. The Blossom Queens and the Illinois Shrine High School Football teams. 34 Medinah Shriner

USHERS (continued) The Ushers finished 2018 in good order – we list the closing numbers for 2018 and the numbers so far for 2019. YEAR JAN/SEPT 2018 2019 Number of regular tours of 10 guests or less 37 8 Number of guests on regular tours 90 25 Number of Ushers available for regular tours 39 12 Number of special tours of 10 guests or more 8 8 Number of guests for special tours 748 403 Number of Ushers available for special tours 43 27 Number of Ushers on duty 748 543 Total hours conducting tours 2,992 2,172 Total hours on duty – all 47 36 The following has been reported before but it is very important in our choosing words. Words make a difference. This was taken from the Shriners Magazine dated March 2017, published by Shriners International. Quote: One of the phrases we continue to try to eliminate from materials, web sites and discussion about the health care is “free care” – and here is why... While, because of the generosity of Shriners, corporate and the general public, Shriners Hospital for Children is able to provide expert, quality care to our patients, regardless on their ability to pay. This care is not free – it has a huge cost. Providing free care is not our mission. Our official mission is to “Provide the highest quality care to children with Neuromusculoskeltal conditions, burn injuries and other special health care needs with a compassionate, family-centered and collaborative care environment – this mission is carried out without regard to – ability of a parent or family to pay. Approximate 85 percent of the organization’s multi-million dollar operating budget is spent in direct support of the organization’s three-part mission of patient care, research and education. Also, including we offer something for free implies we have the means to provide that item for free. It can be confusing to our donors to hear “free care” on the one hand, and we seriously need donations to fund our efforts on the other. For many people. The phrase “free care” means charity care, which may be considered substandard. This is not the concept we want to be associated with, we want our patients to choose our hospitals because they believe they will receive the best care possible. USHERS (continued) And, finally, as we are accepting third-party pay, and insurance co-pays and deductions from our patients families when possible, using the phrase “free care” is clearly incorrect. Our method, not our mission, has changed . . . It is critically important that everyone use our official messages and phrasing. We must be able to communicate that while the way we conduct business has changed, our mission has not. It is imperative that we stress the expert, quality care provided at Shriners Hospital for Children, rather than the cost. Continuing references to fee are can lessen the value of our services, and be detrimental to the clarity of our missions on improving the lives of children. The name of the fraternity is Shriners International. The name of the philanthropy is Shriners Hospital for Children. AANMOS is no longer used. Imperial Council has been replaced with Shriners International. Unquote. NOBLES – when was the last time you visited Shriners Hospital ? ? ? Remember you are part owner. NIH grant funds Brittle Bone Disorders Consortium For the past five years, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago has been part of a multimillion- dollar research project funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Brittle Bone Disorders Consortium of the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network involves Shriners Hospitals for Children locations in Chicago, Montreal and Tampa, along with medical institutions such as Baylor University, the Kennedy Krieger Institute and the Hospital for Special Surgery. The goal of the consortium is to advance the study and treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a brittle bone disorder. Patients with OI may experience dozens of fractures while growing up and require specialized care. The NIH recently awarded a $7 million grant to fund the consortium for five more years. “We are enthusiastic about the opportunity to learn more about this rare disorder and share information to improve care,” Peter Smith, M.D., principal investigator and orthopaedic surgeon at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago, said. According to Baylor College of Medicine, which is the lead site of the 14-center consortium, “The BBDC aims to better understand all genetic forms of OI, expand treatment options and train the next generation of physicians and scientists to study and treat this disorder.” The consortium also partners with the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation. In the last five years the consortium has helped enroll families in a national registry to enhance research of OI. The group is researching new therapies to help treat the cause of brittle bone disease along with additional treatments to improve the quality of life for patients. 38 Medinah Shriner

Introducing the 2019 - 2020 Shriners Hospitals for Children National Patient Ambassadors Madelyn, now 19, was born 10 weeks early. Doctors told her parents that she was beautiful, healthy, tiny – and was born without her left arm. Madelyn’s journey with Shriners Hospitals for Children began with her first visit to our St. Louis location, when she was just 3 months old. Throughout her childhood, Madelyn used prosthetics, mainly for balance, and to help with various activities. Occupational therapists at the hospital helped Madelyn learn to function and interact in the world. As she grew older, Madelyn began using her prosthetics less often, and by middle school, she opted to stop using them. In school, Madelyn’s busy schedule included not only her classwork but also competitive swimming, first on a team for children with disabilities, then on her high school team. She also participated in competitive, coed water polo. “Nothing is impossible in my mind,’ she said. “It’s just the ability to adapt and work around it.” Madelyn has always devoted herself to advocating and educating. She loves to make YouTube videos showing how to accomplish things using only one arm. At Ability Awareness Week, a program of St. Louis area elementary schools, Madelyn loves to share her story and to explain how Shriners Hospitals for Children changed her life. Drawing from her own experiences of being bullied for having only one arm, Madelyn likes to incorporate anti-bullying themes into her presentations. “I am incredibly excited to see where this year takes me,” Madelyn said. “I hope to inspire other kids, and be able to show them that they can do anything they put their mind to – they might just do it a little bit differently.” Madelyn is currently a student at Maryville University in St. Louis, where she is very active in student activities, and made the Dean’s List her first two semesters” Cristian, who is now 18, was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. In his first two weeks of life, Cristian had two surgeries and went on to have nearly a dozen more. Cristian faced several of the same challenges of many other patients with spina bifida, including gastro-intestinal system and balance difficulties, as well as complications from various surgeries. For several years, Cristian’s family had difficulty finding doctors who understood how to best help him. That all changed one day in 2012, when Cristian met a Shriner who referred him to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Cristian was 13 when he had the surgery that he says changed his life and gave him hope, at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Los Angeles (now Shriners for Children Medical Center in Pasadena, California). Devoted to his schoolwork and seminary studies as well as his part-time job and playing the cello, Cristian has also been active in supporting Shriners Hospitals for Children. He even dedicated his Eagle Scout project to the cause, raising funds to present more than 200 Build-A-Bear toys to the Pasadena medical center. Cristian is looking forward to his responsibilities as a National Patient Ambassador. “I know that I am who I am because of the Shriners,” he said. “I have been able to see that I can do whatever I want and I can overcome any obstacle that I face. I want to give back to them because of that – because of the life that they’ve given me. Through Shriners Hospitals for Children and the national ambassadorship that I’ve been given, I hope to share a message of positivity and hope to all those who need it.” We congratulate Cristian and Madelyn, and thank them for their willingness to represent Shriners Hospitals for Children, and share their stories. 40 Medinah Shriner
