The Potentate’s Perspective Medinah Welcome 2019! “The Fraternal Entertainment Zone” Nobles and Ladies, 2018 was both exciting and challenging at the same time. We lost some great Nobles, friends and family along the way that will be deeply missed. Cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey. I want to personally thank every one of you for your help and support you gave to Debbie Jo and me this year to keep Medinah the great Shrine Center it is. We just returned from a beautiful Caribbean cruise on the Royal Princess where we had 100 people from Medinah on the ship. Everyone wore the Medinah men’s or la- dies pins which was a great way to recognize who was on the trip from Medinah. But more importantly, so many asked us what the pin was for and it was a great segue for a conversation about Shriners Hospital for Children. We also met many Masons and Nobles aboard the cruise from other Shrine Centers. Next year’s cruise will be on the brand-new Sky Princess leaving from Fort Lauderdale on December 14, 2019. We hope you can join us! continued on the next page…. Winter 2018 3

TRACY BURCHAM CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD 2018 - 2019 Tracy was born in Iuka, MS and spent much of his childhood in Masonic lodges since his parents were very active in the Blue Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star. While he always knew he would join the Masons, his real interest was always being a Shrine clown. Tracy was raised a Master Mason in December 1995 at Crossroads Lodge #637 in Corinth, MS. He joined Hamasa Shriners in Meridian, MS in April 1996 and was active with the Alcorn County Shrine Club where he served as Treasurer and then as President. After graduating from the University of North Alabama in 1997, Tracy worked as an Internal Auditor with The Bank of Mississippi until January 1999. He relocated to Detroit, MI and took a job with JPMorgan Chase Bank where he has been employed for the last 19+ years. After spending a couple years in Detroit, Tracy relocated to Louisville, KY for 5 years. During his time in Louisville, Tracy met Nui, and a wonderful friendship was formed. Tracy moved to Chicago in November 2007, joined Medinah, and became involved with the Clowns. In April 2008, Tracy’s goal was achieved as Peanut the clown was born. Tracy has served the Medinah Clowns as Treasurer for several years and was appointed Director of the Unit in January 2018. Tracy served as a Potentate’s Aide for Don Marquardt in 2013, Mike Keltner in 2015, Craig Stimpert in 2016, and was Chief Aide for Lance Evans in 2017. Tracy is a member of other appendant bodies and organizations including: The Board of Governors at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Chicago, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Order of Eastern Star, Royal Order of Jesters, Benevolent Order of Crabs, and Chicago Kentucky Colonels. Tracy and Nui were married in 2010 and reside in Lombard, IL. Tracy’s twelve- year-old daughter Madison lives in Lake Orion, MI but attends Medinah events when her schedule permits. Legendary rock band donates worldwide hit song to Shriners Hospitals for Children FOREIGNER has recorded a special version of its classic song “I Want To Know What Love Is” FOREIGNER, the classic British-American rock band, has announced that it will be donating its hit song I Want To Know What Love Is to Shriners Hospitals for Children. FOREIGNER recently recorded the song with Kelly Hansen as lead vocalist, and they will be creating a new music video featuring Shriners Hospitals for Children patients. The new release will be available for download on Google Play and iTunes on January 1. FOREIGNER is donating all sales proceeds to Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Mick Jones composition I Want To Know What Love Is hit the top of the charts all over the world when it was released in 1984, and is FOREIGNER’s biggest hit to date. It remains one of the band's best-known songs and is listed as one of Rolling Stone Magazine's greatest songs of all time. “There is a spiritual undertone to I Want To Know What Love Is, and when you apply the lyrics to a cause like Shriners Hospitals for Children, it brings a whole new meaning to the song,” said FOREIGNER lead guitarist and songwriter Mick Jones. bonus.” “It’s hard to put a dollar amount on the value of this gift, but this is truly a monumental donation in our mind,” said John McCabe, executive vice president of Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Participating in the music video will be an invaluable experience for our patients. The fact that sales proceeds from the download of this song will go to Shriners Hospitals for Children is a wonderful “FOREIGNER has been involved with Shriners Hospitals for 10 years, and we’ve been looking for a way to make a more meaningful impact,” said lead singer Kelly Hansen. “The lyrics of this song really speak to the qualities we’ve observed in the children here at Shriners Hospitals. The kids show this amazing resilience and happiness that really makes one think how powerful love is.” Winter 2018 21

News of Units, Committees, & SC’s MINI-CHOPPERS We Can’t Wait For The 2019 Parade Season! We hope that everyone in the Medinah family had a wonderful Holiday Season and Happy New Year! We would like to wish a very happy 2019 to our Illustrious Potentate Bill Kissane, First Lady Debbie Jo, and to all of the Divan. The Mighty Mini Choppers had a great parade season last year and it is our hope that our presence in the public eye gave someone the idea of referring a child to SHC - Chicago. We always try and promote the Masonic principles of Faith, Hope, & Charity wherever we go. Before we know it, the 2019 season will start for us with some St. Patrick’s Day parades. Everyone in our club is also looking forward to participating in the fun activities at Medinah. From all the Mini Choppers, please stay warm, healthy and happy. News of Units, Committees, & SC’s ORIENTAL BAND First things first ~ a hearty congratulations to bandsman Hammond White who was selected as “Bandsman of the Year”! He is truly deserving of this recognition. His award was announced at our unit Christmas Party held in December at the Oasis. Many members came from far and wide for the season’s festivities. All were also happy to see former member Don Huber and his wife Rena at the dinner. The food was great and the fellowship sparked the beginning of many holiday celebrations. The Band still meets on the 2nd and 4th Friday evenings of each month. Practices are a good way to keep us in musical shape for our ceremonials and summer parades. Food is served on the second practice of each month (4th Friday). May the beginning of 2019 offer you peace, good health, and contentment. Bruce M. Allman Scribe PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Medinah Photography Club had a great 2018 Shrine Year. We took hundreds of photos at events and shared our work at practically no cost. As the parades, OV’s, and other Shrine events unfolded, we were there. We shot KISS member Gene Simmons' Vault event and an attendee donated a large sum to our hospital. One of our group got married and we were there. We flew the drone and shot some nice aerials of the family picnic and it was great fun. Medinah’s Car Show, golf outings, and holiday parties were all on the agenda. In fact, we snapped so many photos that a few of our frequently used cameras needed more maintenance than usual. That’s getting our money’s worth. As we look to 2019, we anticipate even more great things from our group. Please feel free to call upon us for services when you need them and we will do our best. Thanks for great year! 34 Medinah Shriner
POLICE UNIT The Medinah Police Unit honored Chief Pete Smith in January. Thirteen years ago, Dennis Meyer was appointed Captain of the Guard by Illustrious Sir Robert Alley, who then appointed Peter Smith (formerly of Elmhurst Police Department) our Chief. Chief Smith has been a great example of leadership and support for Medinah all these years and has decided to step down. Deputy Chief Rich Schak, formerly of the Chicago Police, was appointed Chief of the Unit on January 19th. Then, long-time Shriner and Police Unit member Tom Reynolds was appointed by Rich as Deputy Chief. Tom will do a great job! As we all move forward the Police Unit is ready to continue to serve Medinah and any way possible. It will be fun! We also must remember that we lost Mike Langer and LeRoy Baumann this past Masonic year, but we know that both fine Nobles are looking down on all of us to help keep all on track. Have a great year!! News of Units, Committees, & SC’s THERAPY DOG CLUB On the 19th of December, the Medinah Shrine Therapy Dog Club visited Mercy Hospital & Medical Center in Chicago. This visit was in conjunction with the Masonic Association of Service and Therapy dogs. The 19th was exactly one month after the devastating shooting that took place at the hospital. This visit was slightly different than a normal therapy dog visit, because it was solely for the hospital staff. This was a very humbling day for MSTDC and MAST. We appreciate the opportunities we are given to put a smile on the faces of those affected, one tail wag at a time. Tori Meyn MSTDC Winter 2018 37

The Sale of David Ragan’s NASCAR Racer Raises $300,000 for Shriners Hospitals!! No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford raced by David Racing during the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season raised $300,000 for Shriners Hospitals for children. The car was sold Jan. 17 during a Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, AZ. American entrepreneur and racing fan Rick Steele was the highest bidder on the car. \"I really can't thank Rick enough for his generous bid and donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children,” Ragan said in a press release from David Ragan Inc. \"He really made tonight memorable for me, but also made a huge impact and benefit to the Shriners Hospitals and their patients and families. It was a wonderful night and $300,000 raised is amazing. I have to thank Bob Jenkins of Front Row Motorsports for donating the car and Doug Yates for donating the engine. There are so many other people who made this possible, too. I hope they all feel great for making such a big impact.” Ragan raced the car, which featured a special Shriners Hospital paint scheme, in the AAA 400 Drive for Autism at Dover International Speedway in Delaware on May 6. He finished 27th in the race after starting 32nd. The car was equipped with a four-speed G-Force transmission, a 750-horsepower Roush Yates engine, a 4.63 rear gear, and Goodyear racing tires. \"I am excited to combine my two passions of competing in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and supporting the Shriners Hospitals for Children,” Ragan said in a December press release announcing the car’s January sale. \"One lucky high bidder will not only have the opportunity to win an authentic Ford Fusion racecar but also make a big difference for the patients and families of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. All the proceeds of the car are going to the hospitals, and that's exciting because we're looking for a big bid. And this car is the real deal. With a 750 horsepower Roush Yates Racing engine and prepared to hit the track, I am sure it will draw some attention in Scottsdale. I will be there to meet the winner and thank them personally.” Winter 2018 47
