Introduction The High School of Fashion Industries provides challenging, creative and effective career, technical and academic training for New York City students. The faculty and administration of our school, working with families and the student body, seek to pro- vide a unique learning experience and a specially tailored program for all students who have an interest in Visual Arts, Business, and Fashion Design. The High School of Fashion Industries has a long history and tradition dating back to 1926. The building itself is located on West 24th Street, in the heart of Chelsea, NYC. Thus, as you enter the High School of Fashion Industries, you are becoming part of a tradition of excellence. As a student, you begin your journey with your family and the entire HSFI faculty to design your future whether you decide to pursue a college education in Visual Arts or Fashion Design, or a non-design related field such as Business or Education. At the end of your four year journey at the High School of Fashion Industries, students acquire the knowledge and skills to begin their college and career journey. 3

This exhibition is one the most anticipated events of the school year as it is attended by students, families, staff, alumni and fashion professionals and celebrities. Kleinfeld Partnership HSFI has a long standing partnership with Kleinfeld Bridal of ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ fame. Our students are mentored by Kleinfeld staff and involved in a competition to design wedding gowns. There is a culminating event at the Kleinfeld salon where bridal industry professionals judge the gowns and declare an overall winner. Curvy Lab Inspired by the curvy body, The Curvy Lab was designed by Angela O’Riley as a creative space to discuss and experiment with design, fit, and production of size in- clusive fashion. The Curvy Lab Initiative celebrates and is passionate about improv- ing the quantity and quality of clothing for the curvy woman. 5

The partnership features an integrated curriculum designed by ICP and HSFI Services that includes an in-school foundation photography course, an after-school begin- Falcon Health ner's class, and an intermediate documentary workshop. This program takes place Center in a teaching facility built by ICP, which includes a ten-station darkroom, a film- processing area, and a studio/classroom. The collaboration culminates in an annual photo exhibition. The Senior Art Show The Senior Art Showcase is a major attraction for art lovers who are drawn to HSFI to witness the next generation of promising artists. This exhibition celebrates each student’s unique experience and is a manifestation of four years of research, exper- imentation, critical thinking, and artistic proficiency. As part of their final project, sen- iors showcase their artwork in a gallery like setting in the school lobby. The show displays the talents and dedication of each and every student, using a variety of art mediums, and is attended by staff and art enthusiasts alike. Fashion Business Marketing Fashion Design The Fashion Business Marketing program has a dynamic comprehensive curriculum Art, Photography & designed to delve into the wonderful world of business by providing one-of-a kind ex- perience through industry partnerships. Students will master the skills necessary for New Media global retail operations and management. Working individually and in teams, stu- dents receive an impressive foundation in fashion marketing & management under Fashion Marketing the tutelage of seasoned faculty and business professionals. The HSFI Business Visual Marketing program helps students master the concepts of finance, communication, marketing, and advertising. Students in their senior year will have the opportunity to Merchandising choose between two alternative tracks. The first path is our Virtual Enterprise pro- Sports at HSFI gram, which is a student-run class where they oversee the day-to-day operations of our school store, ‘Fashion FLY NY.’ The second path is the Business Entrepreneurial program where students create integrated business plans and marketing campaigns so they get the experience of starting and managing their very own business. ADIDAS Partnership Extracurricular HSFI students are valued members of the ADIDAS team by actively participating in Activities & Clubs focus groups with fitness experts, stylists and sports enthusiasts to help develop the College Access company’s marketing campaign geared towards the millennial market. Support Viacom Partnership Emotions Matter Our Viacom partnership allows students to get real-world experience at this media and entertainment powerhouse (Viacom owns Paramount Pictures, MTV, Nickelode- on, BET & CMT). Our students have the opportunity to collaborate on projects with company executives across a wide range of company departments. Hildun & Barneys Internship Program Equity Matters The Hildun & Barneys NY internship programs allows students to spend the summer Special shadowing professionals from various departments and receive guidance from senior executives through a unique mentorship opportunity. The Advanced Advisory Board of the High School of Fashion Industries Placement Program Advisory Board Non-profit organization made up of fashion and art professionals with the mission to fund-raise for college scholarships, offer hsfi students internships 11 and job opportunities, and provides curriculum guidance to adapt to current business trends. Career Day Career Day is an annual HSFI event where prominent industry professionals in the world of fashion, business, art and media present their personal experiences. Career Day affords students the opportunity to explore options within and beyond the scope of their majors. Professionals speak on behalf of the companies they represent, their professional experiences, as well as their academic background. Students, always curious, inquire about the day-to-day activities and various paths that professionals have taken to reach their current position.

Sport at HSFI Fashion Design HSFI has a vibrant sports program with 16 sports teams that compete on the highest Art, Photography & level across NYC. Our student-athletes take pride in representing the ‘Fashion Fal- cons’ in the Public Schools Athletic League. All students are welcome to tryout and New Media join our sports teams. Students on sports teams have the opportunity to earn school credit towards graduation and be exempt from physical education class. Extracurricular Activities & Clubs Fashion Design Art, Photography & HSFI offers 25+ extracurricular clubs and activities that are open to all HSFI stu- dents. Students are encouraged to participate in as many clubs and activities as New Media they wish. Student participation in these activities strengthens their connection to Fashion Marketing the HSFI community and provides them the energy to excel as a student. College Access Support HSFI Youth Leaders who are students professionally trained to support their classmates in the college application and financial aid process. 16

College Access Support Fashion Design Art, Photography & HSFI is focused on making sure students are prepared for ‘Life After the High School of Fashion Industries.’ Our philosophy is that it is never too early to learn about the New Media college application and financial aid process. HSFI provides students with the knowledge and tools to navigate the college process beginning in freshman year. Fashion Marketing Our resources around college access include a full-time college counselor who works Visual in our Student Success Center, which is a dedicated classroom devoted to college supports. Our comprehensive college access system includes: Merchandising Sports at HSFI • FULL-TIME COLLEGE COUNSELOR who coordinates all parts of the school’s college access efforts to insure that every HSFI student is admitted to the college of their choice • COLLEGE PREP CLASSES that students are programmed for during their 11th and 12th grades where they are taught about college applications and the financial aid process. • YOUTH LEADERS who are 11th and 12th graders who are trained to be college Extracurricular counselors to their peers. Naviance works directly with the Common Application which is a site where students can research colleges and careers using one central database. • GOOGLE APPS FOR EDUCATION which includes Google Docs, Google Drive, Equity Matters Google Classroom and Google Email. Many classroom teachers integrate Special Google Apps into their classroom lessons. Students have the ability to access these apps both at home and on school computers as well as install on their per- Education sonal devices. Jupiter The Advanced Grades allows parents and students to check their grades and assignments in Placement Program each individual class. Parents and students each have their own unique log- in. Jupiter Grades is accessible both by a web browser or your smart phone. It is a great way to keep up with assignments, grades, and communication between parents and teachers. In college, students will be independently responsible for keeping track of their progress. 17

Emotions Matter Fashion Design Art, Photography & Emotions matter at the High School of Fashion Industries. Our main school goal is that all students feel cared for and challenged. We will consistently ask students New Media ‘How you are feeling?’ and we make a commitment to listen to the responses and Fashion Marketing follow up with the supports that are needed to help. When high school students are asked ‘How you are feeling?’, the responses are usually ‘stressed, bored and tired.’ Visual HSFI will work hard and thoughtfully to help our students feel accepted, connected, Merchandising hopeful, interested, happy and respected. Equity Matters Fashion Design Art, Photography & The High School of Fashion Industries (HSFI) is a diverse, multi-cultural community made up of students and staff from a wide variety of races and ethnicities. Belonging: All students have a strong sense and appreciation of their own culture and heritage, as well as of those of their diverse classmates. Commitment to dismantling racism and oppression: All students understand the role that institutional racism and other forms of oppression play in our society and have the skills, vision, and courage to dismantle them. Special Education Services Fashion Design Art, Photography & At HSFI, students with disabilities have access to the same curriculum and high ex- pectations as their peers. Here is a quote from Karina G., a recent HSFI graduate, New Media who had an IEP, “In middle school, I would feel out of place because of some of my Fashion Marketing academic struggles. Students are programmed based on the man- dates stated within their IEP and determined during the IEP meeting. At HSFI, we Support use flexible programming to address the specific needs of all students. We currently Emotions Matter offer ICT, SETSS and a 15:1 setting. Equity Matters SETSS is a course for students who are able to participate in the general education Special setting with a moderate amount of support. Within the SETSS course, teachers focus on students’ IEP goals and building the skills needed to achieve those goals. Education Services Integrated Co-Teaching, or ICT, is a course in which the needs of students are ad- dressed by a general education and special education teacher within a general edu- cation class. ICT is offered in Math, English, Science and Social Studies and the de- termination for which course students will be placed in is made during the IEP meet- ing by the student, their family and the IEP team. The 15:1 (15 students to one special education teacher) setting is for students who struggle within the general education curriculum and need additional support to ac- cess the material. READ 180 is a literacy course offered to freshman and sopho- mores within this setting and is structured to build upon skills needed for academic success. In addition to hosting IEP meetings and working on programming, the Students with Disabilities office facilitates the IEP mandated related services of counseling, speech, occupational and physical therapy. We work with a Social Worker and School Psy- chologist, as well as coordinate with the school based health clinic, The Falcon Health Center, to assist families in receiving services for their children. The Falcon Health Center Fashion Design Art, Photography & We are very fortunate at HSFI to have the Falcon Health Center. Students can be seen at the Falcon Health Center for any of their health care needs – just like a New Media doctor’s office outside of school – and the best part, these services are FREE. Students can come by if they have a question about their body, their health or if they Fashion Marketing just need to talk. Visual Location: Room 343 (3rd Floor) Merchandising Hours of Operation: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Friday all year and all summer. Academics & Advanced Placement Program Fashion Design Art, Photography & Our main school goal is that all students feel cared for and challenged. A large part of the High School of Fashion Industries’ mission is to get students ready for college New Media and career. With this in mind, we offer a wide variety of Honors and Advanced Place- Fashion Marketing ment courses to challenge students and prepare them for life after HSFI. We encour- age all students to take at least one honors or Advanced Placement course during Visual their time at HSFI. Merchandising Sports at HSFI Here are the reasons to challenge yourself with these Honors and Advanced Place- ment courses: Extracurricular Activities & Clubs 1. There is not much students can do in life these days without a college degree - these courses will help prepare students for the types of classes they will take in college. 2. Students should want to get into the best college possible – students’ applications for college will look stronger with Honors and Advanced Placement courses on their transcript. 3. Saving Money $$$ - if students are successful in Advanced Placement tests, they can earn college credit during high school and these are classes they do not have to take in college. These college credit-bearing classes take place at Hunter College and City College. HSFI also has a partnership with Flor- ence University of the Arts where students can travel to Italy for an incredible interna- tional experience. 27
