Spring is here and with the good weather comes the urge to spring clean our bodies and fill them with nutritious healthy tasty foods....but where do we start? How about a green smoothie? What would you be without fear? What an interesting question to ask. The usual response is, “I'd be free, happy, at peace.” So when the answer is so obviously positive, why do we continue down the path of fear? Fears are a strong belief in something negative happening. Many times a good willed friend or relative offers advice along the lines of, “Don't worry that will never happen.” However, when it raises its head, it's as real as getting slapped across the face with a wet fish. Just with a mere thought, your body can go into the fight or flight mode; heart speeding up, breath shortening, feeling strangled, to name a few sensations. Try telling someone that's not real. Fears are usually manifested over long periods of time, evolving into something greater if not dealt with. This is where fears and anxiety get quite frustrating as consciously you could fill yourself with many positive thoughts and affirmations but on the sub-conscious level, you could be having many stories and feelings fired at you, reconfirming the fears. It is said that the sub-conscious drives 90% to 95% of our lives. Theta Healing can be quite helpful from this perspective. A Day in The Life…Every day, I am grateful for something. However today, I dedicatemy gratitude to my workplace, Lotus. Yes you are stretching & strengthening the whole body, but with guidance from a teacher, or if you have a well-developed personal practice, the stretching or holding a position for a period of time becomes so much more about the alignment of your body and obtaining the physical benefits each posture gives. The most important part of yoga practice is to breathe. Breath awareness becomes about tuning into the subtle sensations of the body and bringing mindfulness to the yoga practice, allowing you to move more deeply into postures which is missing when you are just stretching or are more concerned with your appearance or what shape you may make with your body in a posture or stretch. Q. How flexible do I need to be? “I don’t think I am flexible enough to do yoga.” A. If you have tight muscles or stiffness in the body, yoga is just what you need to loosen up your whole body. Moving & stretching in new ways will assist you to become more flexible over a period of time. You can expect to gain flexibility in your hamstrings, back, shoulders & hips. Movement through a yoga practice with breath awareness allows the body to move with a greater range of flexibility allowing for a deeper stretch into postures for better wellbeing of the once tight or stiff areas of your body. Q. I’m sacred I will pass wind in yoga postures, what do I do if this happens? A. Well you can have a laugh or pretend it didn’t happen…. Passing wind while practicing yoga is perfectly normal, you are moving the body in ways that are massaging internal organs & maybe stirring things up in your stomach in a positive action of stimulation. The action of yoga assists the purification within the body & detoxification for the whole being.40

Q. Can I eat before a yoga class?A. I would recommend not eating anything heavy in the two hours before you plan to do a class.However if you are hungry try to eat least 30mins before class, only something light like nuts orfruit. In the practice of yoga we are twisting from side to side, we turn upside down; we bendforward & backward so eating too close to a class may make your practice uncomfortable whenmoving in & out of postures & practicing pranayama (breathing practices of yoga). The body willhave a sure way of showing you this uncomfortableness.Q. What does “Om” mean?A. OM is a mantra, or vibration (the sound of the universe) that is traditionally chanted at thebeginning & end of the yoga classes. Like all chanting this is optional for each person, even ifyou don’t chant the subtle vibration of the sound & the art of listening is still a way to experiencethe vibrational effects of OM. Chanting OM takes the individual for a journey on the vibrationaluniversal movement, through the breath as we breathe with awareness. Our physical energy isfelt with honestly & we begin to sense a bigger connection with life itself, even tuning into thebeating of our hearts & love for others who share the space. Chanting OM is uplifting for theheart & our wellbeing.Q. What do I need to bring to my first yoga class?A. Bring your beautiful self in comfortable clothing, this allows for you to move freely in & out ofpostures & to allow the vital life force (prana), your breath, to flow evenly throughout your body.No special foot wear is required because you will be bare foot.
