“I’ve reached a point where I’m comfortable in my own skin, andI do what I need to do, to feel good, but I’m built the way I am.The dancer’s feet, the bruises on my legs, they’re not going to goaway. I think real girls have bruises. Tough chicks get bruised. They get dirty. And they have fun.” ~ Nina Dobrev
Hey Girls,Some months are harder and morechallenging than others and this has beenone of those months. Whether it be thepressure of upcoming exams, challenges withyour family or friends or your own internalvoice telling you that you are not goodenough - it can sometimes feel like it is alljust too much.Last month was one of those for me andwhile I have no magic solution to get youthrough it, I can tell you that you will. Justremember to be kind to yourself, take timeout to just chill out in your room listening toyour favourite tunes, meditating, reading abook, chatting to friends or doing whatever itis that helps you find some peace.Oh, and the other thing (which I often forgetto do) is remember to BREATHE. That maysound crazy as we sorta need to breatheto survive but breathing really deeply, rightinto the core of your body is essential foryour well-being. Give it a try and I bet youwill notice how different it is to your ‘normal’breathing. It always always helps me to getback to my place of peace and calm.Have a peaceful November girls! Lee x Editor

SUSTAINABLE FASHION FOR OUR PLANET NIFTY THRIFTY It was mid-October when I came across a Facebook status of a friend of mine, eco-warrior Holly. In a brief matter of four or so lines, she expressed her genuine concern of out using the Earth’s resources. The problem: Holly writes, the clothing industry is incredibly bad for the planet, using resources we’re running out of and causing pollution. It’s also an industry that cares little for human rights. Holly’s Challenge... To go an entire year wearing only secondhand clothes. Can she do it? I sat down with her to find out. What inspired you to take on such a challenge? Was it a particular person/experiment? I was inspired by The 365 Challenge, created by a company called Redress whose focus is on encouraging sustainable fashion practices. The 365 Challenge is where Redress founder Christina Dean is wearing a year of only second hand clothes, and every month there is a theme, such as DIY or Restyled. While she is nearing the end of her challenge, she continues to urge others to do the challenge too, and I was inspired by the amazing outfits she creates and blogs on her instagram page, so I decided to follow in her footsteps. What do you like about the fashion industry and what aspects of it do you dislike? The fashion industry is great in many ways. I love the creativity that designers display, always reworking ideas into something fresh and exciting. I spend more time than I should watching the season’s new collections by my favourite designers and brands, such as Burberry, Elie Saab and Christopher Kane. But pieces from these designers are totally unattainable for a uni student like me, so instead, every season I turn to the high street stores to update my wardrobe with the new trends that filter down from the catwalks. However, after reading more about where high street fashion comes from and how it is produced, the ethical and environmental issues with “fast fashion” pray too much on my conscience for me to continue shopping this way.
I find that I’m guilty of accumulating too and spread the message that op-shoppingmany clothes that I don’t end up wearing, is a way to have a fun, creative wardrobeare you limiting the number of items you as well as helping reduce pollution, thencan purchase throughout the year at op- that’s a difference made. For myselfshops? personally, I just want to push my own fashion boundaries, try some new stylesI’m definitely guilty of that too, I think and trends that I normally wouldn’t, just foreveryone is. There are always those items the fun of it.we buy on a whim because they have asale sticker. I have not set a limit but I think What do you feel will be the biggestmy student budget limits me enough! obstacle during your year long challenge? What excites you the most about buying/ I think the biggest obstacle will be trying towearing second hand clothing? Are you see the potential in second hand clothing.planning on DIY-ing the clothes you find? Much of it can look old, thin and tatty, so I will have to engage my creativity in orderI think the best part will be that it really to give an item a new way to be worn, andopens your mind to all types of style and to not get discouraged by any amount offashion, and forces you to be creative, second hand shopping trips where I comemixing patterns and textures you normally home empty handed. I will also have awouldn’t, or making you interpret a trend a smaller volume of clothes to wear thandifferent way than just grabbing a $20 top normal, so it will be a challenge to not justfrom a chain store. I also think a second wear the same skirt and top together all thehand wardrobe is one where you can get time, but to explore all the possibilities ofaway with anything, there’s a freedom every item in my second hand wardrobe.about it, there’s so much out there that’sdifferent from the clothes you see that The fact I found out about Holly’s eco-are exactly the same in every store along challenge through a social networkingQueen St. I will absolutely be using my site reminds us of the value of internet.DIY skills. Yes, we pay for internet, but isbutton replaced. Clothes get removed from there is no waste produced just browsing.people’s wardrobes so easily for trivial Often I find myself inspired by blog sites, reasons that could easily be fixed. they are such a simple way to reach out to people on a global scale. What are you hoping to get out of this year-long experiment? Julia Bluhm a girl on a mission
Changing the face of themagazine industry“Julia Bluhm’s mission is aimed at helping to addressself-esteem issues: Julia Bluhm is on a mission to helpaddress serious problems like eating disorders, self-esteemissues and more by exposing that the perfect image ofwhat a woman should look like that many girls have beenindoctrinated to believe in is not even real. As she explainsin her petition: To girls today, the word ‘pretty’ means skinnyand blemish-free. Why is that, when so few girls actually fitinto such a narrow category? It’s because the media tellsus that ‘pretty’ girls are impossibly thin with perfect skin. Here’s what lots of girls don’t know. Those ‘pretty women’that we see in magazines are fake.”“Fourteen-year-old activist Julia Bluhm’s dream of aPhotoshop-free Seventeen is coming true, as the magazinehas officially pledged to curb the practice of airbrushingfashion photographs within its pages. Here’s more about the bold girl who took it upon herself totake on Seventeen magazine - and succeeded - in an effortto help teens like her feel good about their appearance. For years fashion magazines have regularly usedairbrushing, and now photo-editing software like AdobePhotoshop, to alter photographs in order to make themappear flawless. The practice makes for pristine pictures, but 14-year-oldactivist Julia Bluhm contends that it also presents anunattainable image of beauty that contributes to the lowself-esteem and body issues many young women strugglewith every day.In April she launched a protest movement aimed at gettingSeventeen to promise not to use Photoshop to airbrush itsphotographs of young women. Now Julia Bluhm has announced online that thanks to hercampaign, the magazine issued a pledge to its readersdetailing its policy on airbrushing, promising that it willdo everything its power to address the issues raised byBluhm’s protest:Seventeen listened! They’re saying they won’t usephotoshop to digitally alter their models! Bluhm wrote in avictory message on her massively popular pledge’s website. This is a huge victory, and I’m so unbelievably happy.” (Source: IB Times)

When you tell people that you do parkour you get one oftwo responses – well really three. The first lot have no idea what you are talking about and askyou to stumble through a definition of what parkour is. Thesecond group think you’re joking, and proceed to jump overevery little bump in the ground and scream out ‘PARKOUR!’,as they do so for the rest of the day, and finally you get thelast group. Mostly made up of people who don’t really knowyou and how fit you actually are, these people think yoursome sort of flying badass ninja/spy, running around in theshadows and leaping from building to building.I started parkour about 5 months ago, and since then, comerain, hail, (occasional storm), or shine parkour classes havebeen a mixture of the most fun you can have on a Sundayafternoon, and a hell of a lot pain the next day.For me, a typical Sunday now consists of vaulting over (low)walls, push-ups (so many push-ups), but mostly, avoiding atall costs, falling into the (probably) toxic Yarra River. The Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women is a fairly typical all-girls school—that is, if every school teaches advanced martial arts in PE, chemistry always consists of the latest in chemical warfare, and everyone breaks CIA codes for extra credit in computer class. So in truth, while the Gallagher Academy might say it’s a school for geniuses what they really mean is spies. But what happens when a Gallagher Girl falls for a boy who doesn’t have a code name? Cammie Morgan may be fluent in fourteen languages and capable of killing a man in seven different ways (three of which involve a piece of uncooked spaghetti), but the Gallagher Academy hasn’t prepared her for what to do when she meets an ordinary boy who thinks she’s an ordinary girl. Sure, she can tap his phone, hack into his computer, and track him through a mall without him ever being the wiser, but can she have a regular relationship with a regular boy who can never know the truth about her? Cammie may be an elite spy in training, but in her sophomore year, she’s doing something riskier than ever—she’s falling in love.GREAT READS FOR OCTOBER Annabel Greene is a girl who has it all—at least, that’s how it seems on TV commercials. Annabel’s life is far from perfect. Her friendship with her best friends Clarke and Sophie ended bitterly, due to a few events that tore them apart. This left her alone and friendless at the beginning of a new school year. Her sister Whitney’s eating disorder is weighing down the entire family, and Annabel fears speaking out about her past and her lack of enthusiasm for modeling. In the midst of her isolation, she meets Owen—a music-obsessed, intense classmate who, after taking an Anger Management class, is determined to tell the truth. With his help, Annabel may start facing her fears—and more importantly, speaking the truth to herself.

My broken heart Boys think and act so differently than you. You have come to learn this the hard way, perhaps. Well, ultimately, our differences give flavor to our lives, but until then, they give us major headaches. You are heartbroken now, but let’s rewind for a bit to your first encounter. Think about how it felt when you fell in love, about how charming he seemed. Think of how marvelous it felt holding his hand, whether it actually happened in reality, or only in your mind. What happened then? It’s always a fight, a silent one, or a loud one, a fight with yourself, or with the impossibility. It doesn’t matter. You live and you love, that is how you spend your entire life and it is the most beautiful way to do it. And yes, even a heartbreak has its own sad beauty. You probably know so many beautiful sad songs. Your experience is just another. Take it through your mind, play it again and then move on. You will live your love story. But sitting in desperation wondering why it doesn’t happen to you the way you want is not going to bring it about. You know, there is the belief that all things happen for a reason, even the terrible ones. You might not know the reason now; you might realize it in two months, two years, or never at all. However, the reasons are not the centerpiece of your life, you are. Wipe your tears, release your sadness, or anger, or whatever dark feeling rattles through your mind and remember yourself and your future, full of so many wonderful possibilities. By Andrei Nicolai

EPSCRAEPINSGSPUEERREMaking decisions can be tough. As you get olderit can seem to get harder; there’s access to moreinformation, and bigger risks to consider. Added tothis is the influence of your friends and classmates -Peer Group Pressure. This pressure generally ariseswhen you find yourself outnumbered, possibly withless familiar people or someone you particularly wantto impress. It can be difficult to resist to the urge to beincluded, but there are ways to escape the pressurewithout losing face. When you identify any signsof a behaviour you don’t want to be part of, removeyourself from the group in a polite, relaxed manner. Itis perfectly acceptable to make an excuse (tell a smalllie!) if people hassle you about where you’re going.Take a close, trusted friend with you if you can. Findyour own ‘strength in numbers’. If you feel confidentin your ideas, and comfortable with the company, you can try to explain why you don’t want to takepart in the activity. You’re intelligent. You have goodreasons for your decision. How about sharing that?Do remember you don’t OWE anyone an explanationfor saying ‘no’. Rather than worrying about how thiswill reflect on you, examine the behaviour of othersinvolved. Who supported or encouraged you? Takethe pressure off yourself, and put it on back on yourpeers. How can their behaviour impress YOU? Bethe best friend you can be. Support and encourageyour friends and be a beacon for Positive PeerPressure… Inspire, motivate and influence others tobe their best. You’re fantastic.
