FIRST DISTRICT MISSIONARY BAPTIST ASSOCIATION 1230 Desire Street, New Orleans, LA 70117 Telephone: (504) 606-4782 ● Website: www.firstdistrictmba.org Dr. Calvin W. Woods, Jr., President Dr. Rufus Bonds, General Secretary 2017 MASTER CALENDAR 93Theme: “Equipping the Local Church from the Inside in Order to BeEffective, Empowering, Engaging, and Evangelistic on the Outside.” Matthew 28:18-20; Ephesians 4:12 calendarlabs.com

Our HistoryThe First District Missionary Baptist Association is composed of many churches that are united in our vision and mission given to us in 1863 byour founding leaders and members. Our theology and our worship styles include contemporary, progressive, blended and traditional. We arebound together by the cords of love and the common goal of reaching our cities, communities and world for Jesus Christ. As we review the pages and events in our history, our minds will reflect on where God has brought us from. We thank God for the footprints andinformation that were left behind by our Pastors, Ministers, Teachers, Leaders, and Laypersons during this moment in our history. Our historiansdeclared, “The first Negro Association in the city of New Orleans was organized in 1837 by Elder Joseph Wills and was called the LouisianaSouthern Baptist Association. Due to conflicting issues another Association was organized in 1863 by Elders Charles Satchell, George Walker,John Marks, Esau Carter, Alex Armstrong, R.H. Steptoe, John H. Flemings and others, namely The First Free Missionary Association. Realizingthat two organizations were operating in the same district, and that united a more effective spreading of the Gospel would be manifested, thebrethren decided to merge, thus the two united and became The First District Missionary Baptist Association in 1863.” It was later incorporatedin 1895 by President John Flemings.History deals with personalities as well as events which are prominent in the existence of an organization as well as a nation. The progress of anorganization depends largely upon the qualities of the personalities giving leadership to it. The First District Missionary Baptist Association hasbeen led by men of nobility, deep spiritual insight, vision and dauntless courage. Every President in his own perspective has contributed to theexpansion and progress of the organization. The progressive history of the First District Missionary Baptist Association can be followed by ananalytic view of the 13 Presidents and their achievements.First President, Rev. John H. VISION & GOALSOur vision & mission is to help the local pastor and his church to obey the Great Commission of Jesus Christ by using Hismethods of praying, teaching, witnessing, preaching, loving, saving, and healing those in their communities. When westrengthen the local church, we will strengthen our association. We will bring about a change through the following principles: 1. Worship. We will improve our personal and corporate worship services by allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us as we use the right persons in the right places. We will have a Minister of Music along with his/her directors, and musicians will provide the leadership for our First District Mass Choir, Male Chorus, Women Choir, Youth and Young Adult Choir, and our Children’s choir. 2. Leadership. We will equip pastors and laypersons to become more effective in their leadership by examining and improving their leadership style. We will use our Ministerial Alliance along with our Department of Christian Education to provide workshops and special training for our pastors and ministers. We will establish license ministers divisions where other young and older ministers can fellowship, minister, and be empowered to serve others. 3. Discipleship. We will assist pastors and laypersons in making disciples in their churches so that they can continue to grow and impact their communities. We will forge a plan to reach, train, and retain young people in the local Baptist church. 4. Stewardship. We will give and manage the financial affairs of the association with a unified budget. We will continue to provide financial assistance to struggling churches, Union Baptist Seminary, and other organizations. We will help pastors and leaders to get life, health, and commercial insurance for their churches. We will assist them with a retirement program through our National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. and other organizations. 5. Fellowship. We will have a unified fellowship program where we will honor our leaders and members for the work that they have done at the end of the year. We will continue the Living Legends Honorary Program. We will combine our special holiday programs such as one Black History and one Christmas program. calendarlabs.com

VISION & GOALS6. Mentorship. We will use our business and professional leaders to partner with us as we mentor our sons and daughters in all areas of life. We will help them to be competent, courageous, and to compete with others in life.7. Relationship. We will create a Family Outreach Ministry where we will address the needs of Married Couples, Senior Citizens, Singles, Young Adults, Housing, Homelessness, Parenting, Financial Planning and other related needs to the family.8. Entrepreneurship. We will establish NOLA Baptist Charities (501 C-3) agency, and the FDMBA Business Enterprises, Inc. We will publish books, promote music artist, provide transportation, daycare, credit union, and a charter school.9. Citizenship. We will help every member of our churches to become a registered and regular voter. We will network with civil rights groups, and social justice organizations to change policies, procedures, and people for the good of our communities.10. Counsellorship. We will work with the professional counselors in our churches and community to address the mental and physical health issues in our families and communities by having workshops and referral resources.11. Scholarship. We will continue to support our Dr. Matthews McGary Scholarship Program by enhancing it through partnerships with universities, businesses, and other foundations to help our students.12. Membership. We will increase the membership and churches of our association through prayer, marketing, management, and motivation by using our New and Re-Instated Churches Ministry Division. Our dream is to have an Association Headquarters where we will operate our ministry. calendarlabs.com
