DOMINIC AVANT BACKYARD HONEYBELL OIL A STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST... This is a 16x20 plein air painting, one of many done in my backyard. In these studies, light becomes the subject, I find the dappled light on the fruit to be exquisite. Aside from the light, I’m also trying to capture a sense of energy, the feel of the wind and air flowing through the leaves as the light cascades down upon the fruit. I own ten fruit trees and they’re my main hobby outside of my art. 25
A STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST... Was a complete dichotomy of what I was experiencing on my trek up to Rhode Island from Florida. The Summer of 2020 was filled with tension, from civil and racial unrest, protests sparked by the George Floyd incident to wildfires out west, and a pandemic that was spiraling out of control. Even when I arrived in Rhode Island I had to be quarantined for 5 days in a hotel. So when I eventually got out, I went to the shoreline (Beavertail). Where I would do a series of plein air paintings, hike, and picnic with my son Dean who is the figure in this painting. It was our moment of tranquility and a much-needed break from all the societal issues that plagued us that Summer. 26

DOMINIC AVANT BLUE HERON PERCHED ON MANGROVE OIL A STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST... This is a 16x20 plein air painting. The location is Emerson’s Point Preserve, one of my favorite go-to spots to decompress from stress and just be immersed in Florida’s natural beauty. Fifteen years ago when I moved to this area, I immediately knew I was going to put the gulf coast shorelines on canvas. It’s a subject that never gets old. 29

DOMINIC AVANT HER SECRET PLACE OIL A STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST... The Bible uses the term secret place dozens of times in both the Old and New Testaments. Some translations use the word shelter, covering, or dwelling rather than the “secret place.” In simple terms, it can be any place one chooses to separate themselves from the noise of the world. An intimate place from the heart where one speaks to the Lord. ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS FROM THE ARTIST... Even as a child I was intrigued and fascinated with Reflecting on the 16 years I’ve been painting it is nature, I would often spend endless walks in nature. so sad to say that some of the landscapes I’ve once I always knew it would play a big role in my life. Now painted in the infant stages of my career no longer as an accomplished painter it is the backbone of all exist, they’ve been replaced by condos and other my work. From the field studies in my travels to the commercial properties. As a society, we have to make citrus studies in my backyard, and to the larger studio a collective conscious effort to preserve nature so the pieces where figures are interacting with the natural next generation can appreciate it as we do. environment it all goes back to nature for me. Whenever I feel my work hits a roadblock or lacks “Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of energy, I simply return to nature. I’ll do a series of infinite beauty.” field studies and they’ll usually take me someplace —John Ruskin special. The painting Solace is a perfect example. Created in the studio but developed from a series of field studies. DOMINIC AVANT ILLUSTRATION FACULTY Dominic Avant received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts at Rhode Island School of Design. Upon completion at RISD he worked as a free-lance illustrator. He was then recruited by Walt Disney Feature Animation and worked on numerous feature films. It was this creative community that introduced him to plein air painting. Website: www.dominicavant.com/ Instagram: @dominicavantstudio 31
A STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST... In this piece, a little girl on a swing watches the sky above, where a variety of sea creatures swim between the clouds above the dull and uniform city in the distance. Of course, this event takes place in the girl’s imagination, but she dreams of a world where all creatures can live entirely free, no longer plagued by the constraints of humanity, where they could even soar in the sky. 32

ATI GOR A REPRESENTATION ACRYLIC A STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST... The empress tarot card is commonly associated with fertility, love, and passion. I thought of it as a persona of Mother Earth and thus sort of redesigned the card with my own vision. I also took this as an opportunity to explore what I could do with line in a traditional way.
