A dilapidated storefront in the Riverview area of South Memphis will be transformed intothe first of a citywide network of safe houses designed to shield residents from gangs and tohelp steer them toward “better choices,” members of a motorcycle club said Wednesday.The group, Bikers & Social Clubs 4 Change, announced plans to raise $560,000 to refurbish,equip and operate the safe house on Florida Street near Mallory. The facility will offer a se-cure atmosphere in which mentoring and scholarship programs will be provided, said clubpresident Clark “Preacha” Chambers.The group’s major fundraiser will be the “Memphis Bike Fest 2015,” an event planned for Ju-ly 22-26 at Tiger Lane and other areas surrounding the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.Property for the initial safe house was donated by Shelby County.Eventually, safe houses are planned for Frayser, New Chicago, Smoky City and LauderdaleCourts communities, Chambers said. The $560,000 will be a “drop in the bucket” toward thetotal amount of money needed for the network, he added.The club is a nonprofit group whose mission statement says it intends to be an “agent ofchange,” promoting motorcycle awareness and racial healing while providing resources tochildren who live in dangerous or poor neighborhoods.“We’re all God’s children, and we’re all responsible to each other,” said Tom “Hoss” Lewis,president of the bike fest.The safe houses will be open all the time and will house computer work stations, musicrooms and other resources for residents. Although they’ll be available to all communitymembers, the facilities will be intended primarily for middle-school-aged children and theirfamilies, club members said.The initial safe house is on the edge of an area covered by the first injunction ever issuedagainst a gang in Shelby County. The September 2013 injunction obtained by county Dist.Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich and the city of Memphis prohibited members of the Riverside Rollin’90s Neighborhood Crips from associating in public, intimidating residents and conductingother gang activity within a 4.6-square-mile safety zone.
