EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK - 2022 AURA GROUP QATAR OVERVIEW 16

AURA GROUPEMPLOYEE HANDBOOK - 2022 Location and Geography Qatar is a small peninsula on the western shore of the Arabian Gulf that covers approximately is 11,521 square kilometers. From the north to the south the country length is approximately 200 km & from the east to the west is approximately 100km. The landmass forms a rectangle that local folklore describes as resembling the palm of a right hand extended in prayer. Neighboring countries include Bahrain to the northwest, Iran to the northeast, and the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to the south. Qatar and Bahrain both claim the uninhabited Hawar Islands just west of Qatar. Until recently, only small semi-permanent seasonal encampments existed in the interior desert. Water resources near the coast combined with opportunities for fishing, pearl diving, and seagoing trade have supported larger, more permanent settlements. These settlement patterns have contributed to the social differentiation between Bedouin and Hadar. Time Zone Qatar is at GMT+3, which is three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time; this is the equivalent to seven/ eight hours ahead of New York EST/DST, depending on the season. Due to the proximity to the equator – and minimal change in daylight hours – daylight savings/summertime changes are not applied here. 17

EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK - 2022 AURA GROUP Climate 18 Occupying a small land on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, the sovereign state of Qatar has a dry, subtropical desert climate with low annual rainfall and intensely hot and humid summers. The cool period (November to March) and rainfall, however scarce, occurs during this period too, and the rain comes mostly in heavy cloudbursts and thunderstorms. Hot period (May to October) is oven-hot temperature with temperatures ranging from 32˚C (90˚F) to 43˚C (109˚F). July and sometimes August is considered the hottest month at the high of 50˚C (122˚F). Cool period (November to March) when temperatures are warm, and the evenings can be pleasantly cool. January is the coolest month with temperatures ranging from 14˚C (57˚F) to 22˚C (72˚F). The temperature starts to climb after January and by March, the average high is back to 24˚C (75˚F). Public Holiday Islamic holidays are observed in Qatar. Both Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha are major public holidays lasting for three days. Islamic festivals are determined by the lunar calendar, so timings shift each year. • Eid Al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan (the ninth month of the Muslim year, lasting 30 days). • Eid Al-Adha takes place during the month of the Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim is required to make at least once in their life, provided they have enough money and the health to do so). • National Sports Day is also a national holiday in Qatar, held annually on the second Tuesday of February. • Qatar’s National Day, which is on December the 18th, is observed by embassies, private, and government offices.

Voltage converters are not provided in any housing. The television follows the PAL system; DVDs are Region 2 format, though multi-region DVD players are commonly available.
