CBN vs. CBD: Do You Know the Difference? If you’re caught up in the differences between CBN and CBD, don’t distress. As the cannabis industry soars to new heights, growers and consumers are paying attention to many of the lesser- known cannabinoids, or compounds found in cannabis that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. To understand the differences between CBN and CBD, first consider CBD. Cannabidiol was the figurative headliner act of the 2018 Farm Bill that legalized this non-psychoactive compound and made hemp accessible in most states. Now growers are highlighting and isolating different cannabinoids for their potential healing properties. Delta 8 THC, CBG, and HHC are all growing in popularity. While many of these cannabinoids are found in trace amounts in most strains, growers are able to isolate and extract certain compounds to create tinctures with higher concentrations of a cannabinoid. CBN is one of the latest cannabinoids to come into the spotlight.

Enter: CBN CBN, or cannabinol, is making headway as a prime contender in the marketplace. Touted for its mild psychoactive properties, CBN is found in trace amounts in legally grown cannabis, but as a derivative of THC, it may be easier to extract or produce that other cannabinoids. Studies on the effects of CBN are extremely limited, though some research indicates CBN may have beneficial properties much like CBD, including as a sleep aid, for pain relief, for neuroprotective benefits, and for potential anti-inflammatory effects. However, more research is needed to fully support these claims. CBN vs. CBD CBD is the second most common cannabinoid found in cannabis plants. It’s also screamingly popular and is easy to add to your daily regimen or diet. Try tasty Haygood tinctures, immune- supporting gummies, capsules paired with medicinal mushrooms, or topicals like Play Good Muscle Freeze. All of these products boast high CBD content and deliver this cannabinoid’s potent properties: anti-inflammatory for common aches and pains, relief from anxiety and stress, and promoting sound sleep.

More commonly cannabinoids are considered in relation to each other and with the naturally occurring terpenes, or aromatic compounds, found in cannabis. This is considered the entourage effect. CBD and THC, for example, when consumed together may provide different effects than just CBD alone. Haygood’s Full Spectrum Plus gummies tout an optimal blend of THC and CBD for optimal relief from pain and anxiety. Similarly, CBN may work in tandem with other cannabinoids to boost a product’s beneficial properties. Be on the lookout for CBN-specific products as more hemp growers better understand this new-to-the-market cannabinoid.
