In Portugal there are countless sports, and we have gathered the most popular ones, both in the whole country and in our city, such as: Football Basketball Futsal Athletics Ice Hockey Ski Snowboard Trail and hiking Orienteering Cycling Handball Beach football Surf Roller hockey
FOOTBAAL No explanations are necessary because everyone knows what football is about, but, nevertheless, this sport is particularly renowned in our region because, in addition to several clubs for any age, gender, etc... We are also the headquarters of Sporting Clube da Covilhã, a club that participated 15 seasons in the 1st Division, where it reached prominent positions, such as a 5th place in the 1950s. It also played in the 1956/57 season's Portuguese Cup final, but unfortunately, it was defeated. PN
BASKETBALL Basketball is, as you know, a team sport played between two teams. It is played with a ball, where the objective is to insert it into the fixed basket that is located at the ends of the court. Currently, in schools, it is one of the most practiced sports, with several clubs and groups that focus only on this sport spread throughout the region.
FUTSAL Futsal, also called indoor soccer, is a collective sport similar to soccer, but it has its peculiarities. Although they are similar, futsal has specific rules and differs, for example, by the number of players and the size of the playing space. This is a sport that, although it is not as well known as football, in our region there are almost as many clubs and people registered in one as in the other.
ATHLETICS Athletics is the oldest sport, which is known as base sport. It is the main Olympic sport, as expressed in the phrase: “The Olympic Games can only happen with Athletics. Never without him.” Also, our national athletics team recently participated in the European Indoor Championships in Turkey and finished sixth in the European Indoor Athletics Championships.
ICE HOCKEY Ice hockey is also a sport where the objective of the teams is to score goals. The object used is a small disc, called a puck. It is a sport that needs a lot of balance, as it is done on ice on skates. Each player has aistick, a kind of bat used to pass the puck, control it and throw it at the goal. In international competitions, Portuguese teams always finish in high positions.
SKI Skiing is a a recreational activity or a competitive winter sport in which participants slide on snow using skis. Sports material is used in pairs. Skis are each of the boards or skates to facilitate sliding over snow or water. SNOWBOARD Snowboarding or snow surfing is a sport that, like skateboarding and surfing, consists of balancing on a board. This one, however, is done on the snowy surface of mountain slopes.
TRAIL AND HIKING Is a sport that consists of running “off-piste”, on trails or secondary paths, through mountains and hills, crossing streams and rivers, with steep ascents and descents. ORIENTEERING It´s a sport where the athlete, individually, aims to cover a certain distance on varied and unknown terrain, The players have an obligation to pass through certain selected points on the terrain called Control Points that are described on a map distributed at each competitor. As you can imagine, we use of a compass and the use of electronic GPS equipment is prohibited.
CYCLING Cycling is an individual sport, in which each participant makes several stages, usually across different regions of a country. This concept originated in England and has since spread across the world. Cycling is very popular in Portugal. Athletes compete in the Volta a Portugal, and one of the stages passes from Covilhã to the Serra da Estrela tower, being one of the most difficult stages, if not the most difficult.
HANDBALL Handball is a sport, created by a German, played by two teams of 7 elements. This modality is present in different countries, being already integrated in the Olympic Games. The Portuguese wheelchair handball team was world and European champion in 2022 here in Portugal, and had already won 1 gold and 3 silver in other European championships.
BEACH FOOTBALL Beach soccer is a fairly recent sport, similar to soccer, but on the beach. This modality is played with two teams of 5 players. There are several competitions like the European Cup or the World Cup. The Portuguese beach soccer team has around 25 world and continental titles, having been world champion in 2019 for the third time.
SURF Surfing is a sport practiced in the water, with the objective of gliding standing on a surfboard through the waves. In Portugal, several stages of the world championship have already been held, and in one of them the biggest wave ever surfed were observed, in Nazaré.
ROLLER HOCKEY Roller hockey is a collective sport that is played with teams of 5 players. This modality is quite recent, created in this century, although its origins are quite ancient. It is currently practiced in 60 countries. Portugal is one of the 5 countries with the most European and world titles. The Portuguese team has around 60 titles, of which 16 are world cups.
