This is also the case in this first issue of the year. You will learn, for example, Sincerely that 2021 was historically the best in terms of publishing activities at the Faculty, not only Róbert Marušák in the total number of scientific publications, but in particular in the fact that 80% of them are in journals of the first and second WOS quartiles. This will allow us to use motivatio- nal elements even more, such as the support of excellent publication outputs, new postdo- cs, and excellent researchers. Less positive, however, are the large, long-standing inter- departmental differences in scientific rese- arch results. We also notice large differences between employees within departments. This year, more than ever, the departments have to critically evaluate the performance and workload of all employees in pedagogical and scientific activities, as well as the workload of departmental technical staff. Another persis- tent problem, which is reflected in the lower publishing activity of some employees or de- partments, is insufficient use of equipment. This year, the Faculty will have roughly the same budget as last year. However, we will have to earn for increasing operating costs (prices of energy, materials and services) with our performance, projects, contract re- search, and efficient use of the Faculty equi- NEWSLETTER –1– INTRODUCTORY WORD

News from the departments 1 Members of the DFM (Department of Forest Management) have developed the IScanForest application. It is a phone app that allows you to measure trees, their thickness, height, and even position. For more information, visit iscanforest.FLD.czu.cz 2 DFE (Department of Forest Ecology) researchers participated in a study that found that there are approximately 73,000 tree species in the world, more than 9,000 of which have not yet been scientifically documented. It is the result of a new global estimate, in which researchers from all over the world, including scientists from our Faculty, collaborated. British decryption techniques from World War II were used for the estimation. 3 DFE researchers within an international team have explained the effects of extreme heat waves on tree growth and identified which trees may be more susceptible to climatic extremes. Coniferous trees were found to have a more pronounced water deficit than deciduous trees, indicating generally less resistance of conifers to drought and high temperatures. Norway spruce and Scots pine have undergone much more extensive and permanent drain- age of the trunk than beech and oak, which clearly shows that these deciduo- us trees are more resistant to drought and high temperatures. 4 Our researchers from the international EVA project were part of a team that discovered and subsequently examined a 24,000-year-old living multi- cellular organism living in the soil. A major study has also provided evidence that organisms from the Bdelloidea class can survive frozen almost indefinite- ly. The key is that Bdelloidea are a multicellular organism that has a nervous, digestive, and excretory system. From this point of view, it is unique that such an old organism has been found and further multiplied. 5 In order to distinguish individual groups of termites of the same species, to experiment with their behaviour and also to prove their food intake with additives, scientists from the international EVA project colour their food with food dyes, so the termites change colour according to diet. They do not seem to mind it! 6 DGMWB (Department of Game Management and Wildlife Biology) resear- chers found that wild boars sleep an average of 11 hours and 20 minutes a day. They got the answer thanks to a collar. It consists of GPS, accelerometer, and magnetometer. This technology is able to provide just this type of informa- tion.
